Stake Land An orphaned teenager joins a stoic vampire hunter and a desperate group of survivors as they search for a safe haven in a land overrun by monstrous bloodsuckers and ruthless fundamentalists intent on taking over the United States. His entire family slaughtered by vampires, terrified teen Martin (Connor Paolo) is rescued from certain death by a mysterious vampire hunter named Mister (Nick Damici), who trains him how to wield a wooden stake as they wander the wastelands in search of survivors. Before long, the duo is joined by conflicted nun Sister (Kelly McGillis), resourceful youngster Willie (Sean Nelson), and a pregnant teenager (Danielle Harris) looking for a safe place to give birth. With supplies running low and safe houses hard to come by, the group sets their sights on a place known as "New Eden," the last stronghold of humanity. But getting there won't be easy because the crazed fundamentalists who travel the roads by day are even more dangerous than the evil bloodsuckers who stalk the darkness. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Much Better Than Anticipated

I probably never would have given Stake Land a chance, but the reviews from Amazon and IMDB made me curious. After watching it, I was amazed by how much the film makers were able to accomplish on a relatively low budget. The cinematography and music score create a bleak and depressing world that is much more atmospheric than many big budget movies (like "Priest," "Day Breakers" etc.) The acting is very solid, and the overall film is incredibly well done. This is one of the better zombie / vampire / end of the world I've seen in a long time. Don't get me wrong, the wheel has not been re-created- but everything the movie sets out to accomplish does so very well.
Much more a horror drama than a straight out horror film, this movie is character driven and the violence serves purpose to the story, not just thrown in for violence-sake. This is definitely worth at least a rental. It's a road movie much in the vane of "Zombieland" meets "Book of Eli." Only much bleaker.

As a sucker for vampire films and movies(yes, there is a difference for all you film critics out there), I'm always looking for the next 'Let the Right One In', or 'Near Dark'.
While most are questionable, even by 'b-flick' standards, this movie was a pleasant surprise. I would actually say that it borders on being a film, and not just a movie.
Forget all of the technical details, it is after all, done on a low budget and therefore constrained by this fact. For what they were working with in budget, they've put together a really nice product that is both atmospheric and interesting, not cheap or sterile. And while there are some flaws in the story line and narrative, this is a first rate entry.
It would be nice to have more info on the vampires, particularly the later metamorphosis from un-thinking beast to conversing evil creature. If they had used a virus to deconstuct society, this wouldn't be necessary, but since they did....it would be nice.
Anyway, with a better budget and probably more time, they could have had themselves a nice little film, but what they have is a great little movie.

This was such an amazing movie I can't wait to pop it in and watch it again.
By far Danielle Harris' best role and performance to date.
It has shades of many other apocalyptic films while managing to keep it's own identity, and it does take itself seriously and that's what I really love about it.No camp all horror drama and action.
'Mr' is one of the best film heroes to come along in years.
The cast is great even Kelly McGillis came out of the woodwork and gives an awesome performance.
I can't rave enough about this movie..It's different in that the vampires are like Zombies but you have to stake them and not shoot them in the head. This is my new favorite Vamp flick. Two huge thumbs up.
