Synopsis

The sci-fi series may start its third season in a standard way - the premiere, Evolution,, is a technology-run-amok episode - but the 1989-1990 year supplies some of the show's most acclaimed hours. Sarek brings Spock's father (Mark Lenard) to the new Enterprise, and A Matter of Perspective is a Rashomon-like murder mystery where Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is the primary suspect. Worf's family's past drives the drama in Sins of the Father, while Data experiences parenthood when he creates an android in The Offspring. However, the highlights of the season are undeniably Yesterday's Enterprise and Best of Both Worlds, Part I. In the former, a rift forces the Enterprise D into an alternate universe, where Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) is still alive, and the Federation is at war with the Klingons. There, they encounter the Enterprise C, which was transported by a similar rift in time and space during a battle, a situation that creates one of the series' most popular and thought-provoking time-travel episodes. The first part of The Best of Both Worlds is equally beloved for returning the Borg to the universe of The Next Generation. In this tense episode, the cybernetic race targets humans and kidnaps Picard, assimilating him into Locutus of Borg. This shocker of an ending proved to be the series' most thrilling cliffhanger and a fan favorite. On the lighter side, Ménage à Troi, and Déjà Q, all provide humorous diversions from the more drama-heavy episodes, and Hollow Pursuits introduces A-Team star Dwight Schultz as the milquetoast - but much-loved - Barclay. Season three includes guest appearances from Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan, Andreas Katsulas as the sinister Romulan Tomalak, and Tony Todd as Worf's brother Kurn. ~ Kimber Myers
