Poor quailty and many faults.
Posted by: rheashard2 from: on
This was a gift. The first exchanged; DVD door did not fit snug. The second one has the same fault. The gap is more then enough to allow dust to get into unit. Especially true when disc is in use. The high speed of disc creates negative pressure to pull fine dust into unit. Dust is the #1 problem for discs and workings of players. This is one of many problems. The disc takes too long to stop moving with power on. It takes even longer with power off. The high speed of the disc can cause harm to careless hands or fingers. Force stopping can damage disc and unit. The remote is a near necessity to operate unit. There is no way to check battery level. The disc does not resume playing at last stop. The sound is poor. The screen can be tilted or turned to a variety of positions. The problem is that the unit is very light weight. It needs to be secured to avoid over balancing. I am returning this second unit for a different brand or refund.

This is the worst!

I bought this Sylvania 10 Portable DVD Player - Model: SDVD1030, as a gift for my father. I went to see him the day before yesterday and he advised me the DVD player does not work correctly. Once you load the DVD and close the cover, the DVD wont always play, and if it does play, the slightest bump will cause the DVD to stop and restart from the beginning. Looking closely at the device, it seems that the cover that closes the DVD is warped and will not close tightly. I noticed that if you press and hold it down, it corrects the problem... but that in itself is a problem. I didn't buy the DVD player so that my father could hold the DVD lid down the whole time while he watches a movie.
I went to BestBuy yesterday to return the product but I was already over my return period. They did advise me that the product was still under warrantee with Sylvania and that you could authorize the return due to the defectiveness of the product. I called Sylvania and they want me to pay to have the product sent back, on top of a $7 fee and then they will only fix it, not return it.... So - I buy a defective item , nether BestBuy or the manufacturer will give me my money back, instead they want me to shell out more money..... huh? This will be my last purchase at BestBuy or any Sylvania products, including light bulbs.

Great Portable DVD Player
Posted by: mcdgirl57 from: on
Love the 10" screen, it's quiet, great picture quality. I watch DVDs at work all day & this is the best player I've had & I've had several over the 10 years I've worked here. Great value for the money.

Feels cheaply made but works OK
Posted by: JeffS7444 from: on
I kind of liked this thing but ultimately took it back for a refund because:
DVD door is kind of ill-fitting, screen sags slightly to one side.
Photos on BB web site depict a different version of the player than the one I got. Somewhere along the line they omitted the Menu and Mute buttons from the unit. I thought that was annoying since I watch a lot of movies with subtitles. I know I could access the menu using the remote control but why bother with a remote when the player's within easy reach?
Could have lived with either the cheap case plastics or the lack of a menu button, but not both.
Misc: Built-in speakers don't get very loud, but they sound decently clear and crisp. IMO, these forward-firing speakers are where this unit scores over a tablet or notebook.

I bought this to replace an old player. My requirements were the size and price. I didn't get it on sale, but has been $85. That did not matter, as this player exceeds my expectations. I especially enjoy the USB input, as I have many movie files backed up on my computer. I have not used the flash card input yet. This player is extremely lightweight. It has never run out of battery yet. I only watch one movie in one sitting, so the 2 hours the movie runs is just fine. The screen is extremely clear, though very reflective. I hope one day they make a non-reflective screen. The controls work well and convenient on top, rather than the side as other units have. I cannot say much about the speakers, as I only use headphones.

Purchased this 1500 miles away from home for the return car ride. Sad 5 year old when the lid no longer closed properly not allowing play of DVD's. The thing seriously broke on the first day. I got rid of all the packaging away before we left and after I tested it, because we had NO room in the vehicle. My mistake and I could not return or exchange.

It had all the features that I knew I wanted and some that I didn't even know I was going to come to appreciate. Doing my research on line before coming into the store was key and even saved me a bit of money because the on line price was $10 lower than the store price.

Good portable player - long battery life
Posted by: THX1136 from: on
I purchased this player after reading many of the reviews at Best Buy and elsewhere. I was a bit concerned by the consistent comments on the volume of the player - many without any sort of reference. I found no issue with the volume of the player when used in a relatively quiet room. Definitely no issue whatsoever when using ear buds/headphones. FYI, portable players are not meant to overcome road noise in a vehicle or a noisy room. It is expected that the user will employ headphones/ear buds in those kind of environments - or will connect the player via the headphone jack into the vehicle's audio system or home stereo system. The volume defaults to "14" which I assume is a "middle of the dial" setting. That is a bit loud for me when using ear buds so I usually have it set at 11.
The picture quality was good, but does have a more limited "best" viewing angle compared to my Philips portable which this player replaces. The "last memory" function works as it should provided I have not changed discs. (There is no player that will resume playback if discs are changed in my experience.) The battery life is as advertised lasting 5 hours easily.
The player itself uses what seems to be a "thinner" plastic case which would require more careful handling in my mind. (It's not as hefty as my now defunct 10 year old Philips player.) All controls function as they should. My only minor complaint in this area is that there is no "Menu" button on the player itself. It is included on the remote which I have not used yet so I cannot comment on.
The settings are mostly intuitive, but the "screen size" settings are not easily interpreted. The manual does not shed any light in this area either. The "wide" setting is a no brainer, but the Lb and Ps are a guess. I assume Lb is letterbox, Ps no clue. Also, there are 2 picture quality menu items which are not explained in much detail in the manual either. Both appear to do the same thing and I have not discovered the difference yet.
The player has played every disc I've put in it. It does not play Blu-ray. If you place a Blu-ray disc in it will spin up and then give a "no disc" message on the screen. Perhaps folks who have had playback issues were trying to play a Blu-ray disc instead of a standard DVD disc (just a guess). I have not yet played any CDs in the player nor have I tried the card slots so I cannot comment on these aspects. I have only used the player in the house so far, so I cannot comment on mobile use. My player has a manufacture date of June 2016 and the layout of the controls differ from the picture on this site.
I would recommend this player with the caveats mentioned. For me, I believe careful handling is a must due to the "light" feeling construction. Rough handling could possibly cause early failure of the player - I could be completely wrong about this, but it's my gut feeling on this aspect.

met my needs perfectly

Looking for a very simple- to-use dvd player for a 90-year old relative needing to play an exercise DVD to counteract Parkinson's. Also was looking for largest screen available to make viewing easier. This fit the bill perfectly. Easy to use and runs for 5 hours on fully charged batteries.
