The Orphanage Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro produces director Juan Antonio Bayona's gothic frightener about a long-abandoned orphanage with a particularly troubling past. As a child, young orphan Laura spent her formative years being cared for by the staff of a large orphanage located by the Spanish seaside. Those were some of the happiest years of Laura's life, and now, 30 years later, the former charge returns to the dilapidated institution with her husband, Carlos, and their seven-year-old son, Simon, to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. However, something ominous haunts the darkened hallways of this silent, stately manor. When Simon's behavior begins to grow increasingly bizarre and malicious, Laura and Carlos start to suspect that the mysterious surroundings have awoken something ominous in the young boy's imagination. It's not long before Laura, too, is drawn into this disturbing web and the repressed memories of the past come flooding back in a terrifying torrent of tension and deeply disturbing revelations. With opening day drawing near and their situation growing increasingly grim by the hour, Carlos attempts to write off Simon's bizarre behavior as a desperate bid to get more attention from his distracted parents. Laura isn't so easily convinced of this theory, though, and soon embarks on a desperate quest to unearth the terrible secret that lurks in the old house, waiting for just the right moment to inflict devastating damage on both her and her family. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Excellent Ghost Movie

DO NOT let the fact that this movie is subtitled discourage you from watching it, because you will regret it. This is perhaps the best ghost movie I have seen. Guillermo Del Toro has quickly become one of my favorite directors with The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth.

This is what a horror/thriller should be!!!!
Posted by: crazysmalls21 from: Allentown, PA on
This was one of the best horror/thriller movies I've seen in a very long time. Nowadays all the horror/thriller movies that come out are so cliched!!! This one is different, it focuses on character development more than it does on the horror side, which makes you get into the movie. Awesome plot and ending, very well done. Plus its in spanish which gives it this cool and erie feel. And its produced by the guy who made Pan's Labyrinth, which was another amazing movie!!!

I saw "Pan's Labryth" and i loved the consept, this movie, altho it is all in SPanish Speaking, has a wonderful story line, great yet funny speaking actors. lol If you do not understand spanish, no need too, they have subtitiles and the acting is very simple to understand in a way.
Its a cool movie to watch. I reccomend it for those who love creepy movies. =)

This movie starts off a tid bit slow.. and it takes a little to start getting into but once this story unravels it is terrific to say the least. I wish I had saved the money to buy this on blu ray it would be a much better purchase

Great horror movie!
Posted by: redandblack6s from: Winston-Salem, NC on
This was a very good horror movie! The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because it was in spanish. And don't tell me it's because he's spanish, He11boy was in English. He could've atleast made it English dubbed. Besides, you're selling the movie predominantly in America. It doesn't make sense. It's not like an Asian horror designed for Asians, then it eventually makes it's way to us. He makes it in spanish then sells it in America. I don't get it?! My wife and I loved this movie, but for us it takes the fun out of it trying to read a horror movie! I do recommend it, but put on your reading glasses. Also, two other great movies of Del Taco's you may want to check (or should I say read), are Pan's Labyrinth and Devil's Backbone.

*1/2 / ****
This film has nothing new to add to horror or film (unlike Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone); merely a waste of time. I felt cheated after viewing this film simply because the pacing left me feeling atrophied as did the simplicity of the narrative. The story could have been told in 5 min. I felt no sympathy toward the characters especially the orphans. The movie is not even remotely spooky. In fact the movie felt quite contrived and barren of life. The critical reception to the film is quite appalling. I love Roger Ebert but given that he gave this film **** out of **** leaves me very baffled. Buttom line DON'T BOTHER!

Cheap copy of "The Ring" and "Others"
Posted by: metalhead97 from: on
Since I heard from reviews that this movie is "really good" then I decided to watch it, and It was disappointment
because, this movie is a cheap copy of "The Ring" and "Others".Also beware! this movie is in Spanish! You have to watch the English subtitles. Spend your money something else to worth for!

In Spanish with English subtitles
Posted by: klan2010 from: on
Being a Guillermo Del Toro film I should of half expected it not to be in English but that fact made it all the more interesting. Wasn't really spooky at all but still made for a good ghost story.
