Go on the road with the runaways with a rockin' commentary with Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning and a behind-the-scenes look at making the film
The Runaways The story of the groundbreaking '70s female rock group the Runaways is recounted in this River Road Entertainment production focusing on the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett (portrayed by Twilight's Kristen Stewart) and lead vocalist/keyboardist Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) as they navigate a rocky road of touring and record label woes under the malevolent eye of abusive manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) during their teen years. Acclaimed video artist Floria Sigismondi directs from her own script, with Scout Taylor-Compton co-starring as guitarist Lita Ford. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi
great movie of one of 70's punk bands

Over all this movie gives you an insight of what it might have been like for 2 of the members of the Runaways. Its not all rainbows and butterflies, it shows some of the down falls of being in a band back then at a young age.

Some are destined for greatness

The Runaways were the first all girl band started in the 70's, and, although the clothes are extremely disco-ey at times :) you can't deny the incredible music which emerges from this film!
The story really focuses on 2 main characters within the band. There is an attraction of sorts to one another from the beginning. Perhaps a respect for each others' talents and lonely home lives for both characters draws Joan Jett, portrayed by Kristen Stewart and Cherie Currie, Dakota Fanning's role.
Kristen Stewart proves that she can break out of the "Twilight Box" and that she has the chops to kick this role's butt! And she does it very well. Jett herself made the final casting choice and chose Stewart as her character. Kristen does an impeccable job with her innate awkwardness during a time when females weren't getting gigs with the electric guitar, down to her tomboy style and striking likeness to Jett herself. Stewart commands the screen and is a true talent.
All I can say is Oh my Dakota! Fanning's character, Cherie, is extremely provocative, sultry, and, dare I say, promiscuous? Dakota herself has grown up considerably and presents herself extremely comfortable in her role showing off her beautiful womanly figure! Cherie is the beautiful blond "bombshell" lead singer of the Runaways. Dakota actually sings well with and without auto-tune. Her character has incredible presence; especially while on stage!
There are many layers to Cherie...and as the film progresses, Dakota's sensational ability to peel back the emotions which coincide with each passing scene simply cements what a gifted actress she truly is!
The Runaways is filled with drama/coming of age (it's a bunch of chicks, how could there not be? ;) and this is coming from a female haha) Memorable acting, and of course - THE MUSIC!
However these young ladies are just like any band on tour =ing s*x, drugs, and rock 'n roll! What happens when one tips the balance?
I actually love this movie - not only because I can watch it over and over again and never tire of it - but because it's based on true events and inspired other female bands to form; including Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, as well as influencing countless other musicians and girl bands to emerge and succeed. And that right there, must be an amazing feeling when these women look back and see what they've accomplished and contributed to the world of music!
I highly recommend this film - it's funny, sexy, has awesome music... it's fantastic :) I bought it blindly and obviously have had NO regrets and neither will you! :D!
