Synopsis

The Son of a Gun
Veteran western hero Broncho Billy Anderson wrote and starred in a series of cheap westerns released by the Golden West Producing Company in 1919. Like in his heyday with Essanay (the "ay" in Essanay stood for Anderson), Broncho Billy played to his strength: rustic comedy augmented by a dash of pathos. This time, he is a ne'er-do-well who surprises everyone in town by standing up to a nasty gambler (Frank Whitson. Anderson hired many of his old cohorts from the days at Essanay for this series, including comic Harry Todd and fellow cowboy star Fred Church. But time had past the old cowhand by, and he retired from acting in 1919 and from the film business in general a few years later. Wheelchair-bound and frail, an octogenarian Anderson made a surprising, one-time-only comeback in the 1968 potboiler The Bounty Killer. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
