Synopsis

The Unseeable
Tears of a Black Tiger director Wisit Sasanatieng shifts gears from candy-colored westerns to dread-drenched horror with this period frightener about a curious country girl unraveling the mystery of an enigmatic boarding house. The year is 1934, and the country is Thailand. Nualjan (Siraphun Wattanajinda) was just a pregnant village girl who ventured into the countryside in search of her missing husband Chob. Eventually, Nualjan's journey leads her to a tumbledown boarding house owned by the elegant-yet-malevolent Madame Ranjuan (Supornthip Choungrangsee). Rumors abound among the eccentric inhabitants of the boarding house that Madame Ranjuan keeps the company of ghosts, and that her former husband returns nightly to satisfy the longings of his ageing widow. But who could believe the elaborate yarns spun by such an oddball group of tenants? There's the elderly woman who talks to dolls, the wisecracking housekeeper Choy (Visa Konska) who seems to believe there's a flesh-eater on the premises, and the stern manager Miss Somjit (Tassawan Seneewongse), who repeatedly warns Nualjan to stay away from the main house where Madame Ranjuan lives. Later, after Nualjan gives birth and Choy buries the umbilical cord to ward off vampiric entities, Madame Ranjuan makes a most unusual request, and the curious newcomer discovers a chilling link between herself and the widow's husband. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
