Great sound from movies and music. Whoever came up with the idea to make the subwoofer slim enough to put under the couch is brilliant. Not only does it get rid of a big ugly box in your living room, but the couch does an excellent job of transmitting the bass. Music and movies rock with this soundbar! If you have one of the new TVs with the legs on each side, it fits underneath.

Spotify DOES cast from the soundbar
Posted by: JonathanS from: on
I don't know what the previous comment is about. I was able to cast Spotify, Pandora, and other apps directly from the soundbar. The sound quality is excellent. I found that connecting on a 2.4 ghz wifi instead of 5ghz eliminated some initial intermittent connectivity issues. I almost purchased the 5.1 system instead of this one. I'm glad I didn't. Save yourself some bucks. The sound from this unit is incredibly rich and more than adequate for a huge room.
Overall, I would rate this soundbar a solid A compared to the LG, Samsung, Sony models that I tried. Googlecasting is a must-have function. Can't beat the sleek design too.

Surprising sound from such a slim design!

This 3.1 soundbar and subwoofer system is compact, but capable of knocking you out of bed! The subwoofer is only 3.5" thick, when laid on its side, and produces lows that rival 8" speakers in big boxes! I love the wireless connection between the soundbar and sub, and have had no issue with them connecting. The soundbar is so small, only 2.25" tall and deep, and can handle all the volume I can take without losing quality. At first, I thought 400 bucks was a bit pricy for a non speaker company brand of speakers, but Vizio proved their worth. I've bought a few TV's and a Blu-ray player from them and , except for the Blu-ray players cheesy remote, was happy with each. I guess that's why I keep buying them! I'm slightly disappointed with the smartcast TV no longer supporting Amazon video, but just received my 2nd gen fire stick, with Alexa built in, and can now enjoy my prime videos again. Here's my only complaint: when using the hdmi-arc connection, you cannot pass 4k through it, only 1080. So, if your using a 4k Blu-ray player or Xbox one, connect that directly to the TV and run the optical into the soundbar. I stream Netflix through smartcast, have Comcast hi-def through my "good" port, my Xbox through the Arc, and fire stick through the "better" port. All are using the optical, except the Xbox. I can use the Xbox to stream, but I prefer it not be used for that purpose. The fire stick was ten times cheaper, and searching with Alexa is much easier!

Good for eyes but not ears
Posted by: viswhiz from: on
A little history: I was looking for a soundbar for my bedroom (later on my adventure I require HDMI-ARC), and I tried 3 Vizio, 1 LG and 1 Samsung around $200 range (except this one (SB4031-D5), but I got it open box for close to $200). I care not for surround / 5.1, so 2.1 is fine for the purpose. On that price range, the Samsung and LG couldn't touch the first two Vizios. Which Vizios you may ask? The entry level SB3821-C6 (not sold at bestbuy) and the smartcast SB3831-D0. The two (with the same form factor) sounds crystal clear with great highs, clear mids and surprisingly enough bass (from the soundbar itself). The SB3831-D0 sounds a bit better, I assume because it has two drivers per channel (a tweeter and a woofer each channel, and 1 center channel driver). The latter also have a bit better/stronger/deeper subwoofer. Now don't get me wrong they are not the best speakers in the world, but for the price they provide great sound.
Going back to this model being reviewed (SB4031-D5), I drove 70 miles to get this model with discount of about 40% (missing remote). From the looks standpoint, it is an absolutely beautiful set. The soundbar's compact, aluminum and all metal mesh design, combined with the subwoofer's thin design is wonderful. I really wanted to like this soundbar. Unfortunately the sound coming out of the soundbar is very muddy. For lack of a better word, the treble is held back, mids are muddy/unclear, and bass(or lower-mids) on the soundbar itself is almost non-existent. It may not be that bad if you haven't heard the other model. But after getting used to the crystal clear sound of the SB3831-D0, I was really heartbroken when realizing this soundbar's weakness.
The subwoofer however is all good. It is probably even better than the SB3831-D0's subwoofer. I feel it can deliver deeper frequencies. So good that it is often overpowering the muddiness of the soundbar. If you like a lot of bass and don't care much about crisp highs you may be OK with this model.
The SB3821-C6 and SB3831-D0 have the larger form factor, I guess you can fit more or larger drivers in there with proper ports / resonances to more effectively deliver room filling, crystal clear sound. The soundbar of SB4031-D5 is really small, there is probably no space for proper resonance or whatnot. The LG and Samsung soundbar in the price range also have similar smaller form factor and they both suffer similar problem, muddy sound, held back highs and non-existent lower-mids/bass on the soundbar itself. The samsung one may have a bit better highs but the mids suffer more
So in conclusion you either have something that is "compact but muddy," or "crystal clear but bulky." I guess it all comes down to physics.
Vizio did have the larger form factor built better (with aluminum caps and metal grilles) for last year's model. I wish they have something like the SB3831-D0 with the better built. I dislike fabric covers for its tendency to gather dust and stains.

Very good sound

This item does what it's supposed to do. It makes sound. The sub is short, so fit under my very low Swedish box store bed. Very easy to install and setup.

A rushed to market product
Posted by: Mino from: on
I bought the same unit a month ago. Unit had terrible connectivity issues. Wifi connection to the device kept breaking regularly. I thought I had bought a lemon so I returned to the store and exchanged it for a new one. Same problem. This unit does not work well with Spotify and Pandora. There's this weird crackling sound, like the speakers are going bad. This happened in the case of both units. So I called Vizio and was told this was a well-known problem.
This is a prime example of a product that was rushed to market without proper testing and quality control.
Sound (If it works): B+
Wifi connectivity: D
Spotify/Pandora connection: F
Vizio needs to update their product so that the Spotify and connectivity issues are resolved.

Paired with Visio TV
Posted by: Musrang from: on
I purchased this thinking it would work smoothly with my Visio 4K smart TV. Not really.Cannot get the sound bar to turn on with the TV. Nope. No matter how on power up the TV, with Time Warner remote or the Visio remote, the sound bar will not power up unless I either use the sound bar remote or if I use the volume up or down on any remote, it will power up. Weird! And the sound bar will shut off on its own. Called Vizio technical and they couldn't figure it out. I will consider taking it back now. Sound quality is ok.

This soundbar system sounds amazing, but there are 2 things that kept it from being a 5 star. The first is that it markets being able to put the subwoofer under a couch. The subwoofer can fit under a couch but it still needs to be plugged into power. With a little rearranging i was still able to achieve this without wires showing. The second one is that i wish it came with a better remote. You can do a lot of functionalities with the remote, but its not the easiest remote to control. Never thought i would have to read the instructions to adjust subwoofer volume from remote. But those were the only small personal things that kept this from a 5 star
