War of the Worlds An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. Also starring Tim Robbins, War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg, who had been planning the project for years, but set it aside until a wave of "alien invasion" films (led by Independence Day) had run its course. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Blu Ray sound better than DVD

I expected that I would find the lossless sound on the Blu Ray to be better than the dvd. I was not disappointed. Very good extras on the discs also.

The CORRECT version of this to get
Posted by: QuidSquid from: on
One of the best nature documentaries out there. Do yourself a favor and purchase this version over the Oprah Winfrey narration. I tried watching the Oprah version on TV, but couldn't make it through an entire episode.
Amazing camera work and information in this. Lots of exciting things for kids AND adults.

Pretty good movie

I thought this was a pretty good movie with some excellent special effects. The most annoying part of the movie was Dakota Fanning screaming every 5 minutes. Other than that this is pretty good movie.

Great sci-fi film.

While it changes the family dynamic, this film updates the original story to fit the current time while still being faithful. It has good acting, and a tremendous audio mix. Video is bleached and grained up to mimic old war footage, just like Saving Private Ryan. It has a bit of a Spielberg "touch" though, which sort of hurts the end, but it's worth it.

I have one word for this movie Stupid. But I have to still talk about it to reach the minimum so. The "aleans" looked so fake. The movie moved slow. There was no plot. I was bord out of my mind. and then they killed off the only good part of the movie the hot brother. It was such a stupid movie.

Movie = great Blu Ray = horrible

This is an all time great movie. Lots of action and suspense .... the BluRay disk however fails miserably. The quality is terrible. There is so much grain that it looks like an old VHS tape. I have the original DVD release and just bought the BluRay, thinking the quality would be better. I was wrong. Save your money and just buy the DVD. They actually look the same.
Like I said, the movie is great, the BluRay is BAD.

I bought this Blu Ray thinking that the movie would look sooooo much better that DVD. I was wrong. The quality of this Blu Ray is awful. I had to turn down the brightness setting my HDTV just to be able to see the background, otherwise it looked like the actors were on on the surface of the sun. Don't buy this disc.
