300's Zack Snyder brings Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' critically acclaimed comic book Watchmen to the big screen, courtesy of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures. Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film's world is a highly unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have long been made to hang up their tights thanks to the government-sponsored Keene Act, but that all changes with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a robust ex-hero commando whose mysterious free fall out a window perks the interest of one of the country's last remaining vigilantes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). His investigation leads him to caution many of his other former costumed colleagues, including Dr. Manhattan, Night Owl (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino), and her daughter, The Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Heralded for bringing the world of superheroes into the literary world, Watchmen gave the super-powered mythos a real-life grounding that had been missing in mainstream comics to that point. Objectively the greatest comic book film ever made

Posted by: JonB from on 04/17/2016You can read lots of reviews of Watchmen, people either love it or hate it. If you love it - and I do - this is the set to get. It not only has the Blu-Ray, and the DVD, and an entire Blu-Ray of extras... it also has the entire motion comic of the Black Freighter, as well as being the cut of the movie which has the Black Freighter inserted into the movie. You also get the hardcover collectible graphic novel, and the digital copy of the movie. I was skeptical whether the digital copy would be usable, this is a several year old re-release (I assume what we're purchasing is back stock) and the code says it expired in 2014. It did not - the process was a little clunky because I had to use Flixster, but it ported to my Ultraviolet account (and was hence watchable in Vudu) with no problems whatsoever. When I saw the original cut in the theaters, I liked it (except for the "Halleleujah" scene); most people didn't share my opinion and I still considered the original graphic novel to be vastly superior, but I still liked it. A few years later I saw the Director's Cut, which is three hours long; I thought this version was WAY better (except for the "Halleleujah" scene) and I began recommending it to people again. Someone pointed out the "Ultimate Cut" on this version, which somehow incorporated the Black Freighter scenes from the GN; I bit the bullet and picked up the CE. Turns out the Ultimate Cut is by far my favorite version of this movie (except for the "Halleleujah" scene): the scenes have enough time to breathe and revel in the period details; there's legitimately poignant footage added (I'm thinking of That Scene with Hollis); and my regard for Patrick Wilson's performance increases every time I watch this movie. I still think the movie is distinctly inferior to the GN, but the 3.5 hour cut of this movie is the best cinematic realization of this story we're ever likely to see. There are also bonus features which flesh out the world in interesting ways that aren't as engaging as I'd hoped (I'm thinking specifically of the faux Hollywood Tonight feature about the original Nite Owl book) but are still worth watching if you're curious to see everything this world has to offer. And I still maintain that people should definitely do that, because good as the GN or not, this is still a movie people should definitely see.

Great film and set

Posted by: mumrik7 from on 05/16/2013The set contains the out of print version of this movie (which was released several years earlier) and a hardcover of the graphic novel. The box is somewhat flimsy, though, and easily rips at the corner.

Great set but shoddy packaging

Posted by: starchildv335 from on 04/17/2013This is a great set for anyone who doesn't yet own the Watchmen movies. It comes with a hardcover edition of the Watchmen comic book, which is a plus, and includes the ultimate edition of the movie, which has been out of print for awhile. Unfortunately, the package leaves much to be desired. The first set I ordered was ripping at the corners - I was finally able to find a decent set (no rips, but scratches on the lenticular cover) in store.

Great set, but beware of flimsy packaging.

Posted by: rockstarnati from Portage, MI on 04/13/2013Watchmen is a great film, and this release is packed full of great extras, both on disc and in the box itself. It comes with a hardcover edition of the amazing graphic novel that the film is based on. That's an amazing pack in. The problem is, said novel's weight pushes down on the box that contains it, tearing the box in several places. I have to store my book separately from the rest of the box's contents. I had to return my initial purchase because of this issue. My replacement was better, but not much. It is still torn. Just beware of this issue and find as perfect a box as you can. The lenticular cover is a nice touch. The film contained here is The Ultimate Cut, which splices in the animated Tales of the Black Freighter. It would have been nice to have had the animated film separately and a choice to watch just the director's cut without the animation spliced in. The UltraViolet digital copy, however, is a copy of the director's cut.

Reissue of OOP Ultimate Edition
