good overall value for a 25 cu. ft. refrigerator
Posted by: alice from: on
I read all of the negative user reviews before purchae. The majority of the complaints focused around the slow speed in making ice and the thru-the-door ice dispenser may splash ice onto the floor, if not use with care. Some other reviews commented the refrigerator compartment temperature not cold enough.
As I seldom need ice or ice water from refrigerator, and considered the on sale price a very good value for a 25 cu. ft. real stainless steel door, side by side refrigerator, then made the purchase with no regrets so far, also the compressor noise is quite low and unobtrusive.
One more point of my experience to share with all readers: if one follows the factory recommended temperature setting, will result in the refrigerator compartment not cold enough. I used thermometers to monitor and adjusted the temp. settings for about one week, then achieved the optimal freezer temperature at 0 degrees F and the refrigerator temperature just below 40 degrees F. My recommended setting is to turn the freezer temp. knob all the way to the left. i.e. not so cold; turn the refrigerator temp. knob to the right to mid way between 4 and 5, i.e. to the colder side, then this refrigerator will be operating at the FDA recommended cold storage temperature.

Nice features, Poor performance
Posted by: Mustang1967 from: chicago, il on
We bought this Whirlpool 2 1/2 weeks ago to replace our older Whirlpool. We like the brand and the features this fridge offered. We have a limited space and this model fit. We liked the looks, the LED lighting, storage and external ice/water (our previous fridge also had the external dispenser). However, there is a severe design flaw in the dispenser and we are exchanging this model for another, paying the cost difference. The problem is that ice dispensed gets trapped in the chute door, and not all the ice releases when you remove your glass.
The result is that seconds later, or when you switch from ice to water, the remainder of the "stuck" ice shoots out and ends up all over your floor. And the water drips after your done dispensing also leaving a trail. I called Whirlpool customer service to inquire if there was a fix for this problem and they told me they had calls on this, but there is no remedy. They said just hold my glass against the dispenser for an extra 2-3 seconds. However, when you try this, ice and water continue to dispense, just making the mess worse. This is a common problem among reviewers, and it is a real issue. I suspect the chute door is not opening wide enough, then closing too slowly trapping the ice at that door. It then shakes loose when you remove your glass creating the mess. Whirlpool has no answer, but Best Buy agreed to exchange the fridge, so that's what we're going to do. So if you use ice and water dispensers, and our family does a bunch, do not purchase this model. And by the way, we are exchanging this model for another model made by Whirlpool which has separate levers for ice and water, so I have no bias against Whirlpool.

Sprays ice everywhere
Posted by: zzBoogie from: Ohio on
We bought this refrigerator before there were any reviews available. When we exchanged the refrigerator, the sales person checked the reviews. The few she was able to access at the store do not all show up here. One mentioned that the icemaker spews ice all over the floor. It is indeed true, no matter what size glass we tried. In addition we could only get crushed ice. The cube setting would not work once the crushed setting was used. The shelves are not adjustable in height, which I had not noticed when purchased. The refrigerator does NOT come with a filter. If you want one you have to get one from the manufacturer. Best Buy does not sell them and cannot order them.
Best Buy sales staff were wonderful about exchanging it. We selected a GE and are quite happy with it.

Good basic refrigerator
Posted by: Scorp3pio from: on
We are mostly pleased with this refrigerator. It's a fairly basic model but works well.
1. Cooling in refrigerator and freezer is excellent
3. Ice maker is fast
4. Meat drawer works well
5. Easy to clean
6. Reasonably priced
7. It was the only refrigerator we could find that fits into our 69 9/16" high space
1. In-door ice dispenser spits crushed ice everywhere
2. Does not come with enough shelves. Both the refrigerator and freezer have fittings for and really need an additional shelf each. We ended up purchasing an additional refrigerator shelf and it fits in well. Unfortunately, the additional freezer shelf does not appear to be available from Whirlpool at present.
3. Documentation for the appliance is minimal and poor. This includes both the documentation that came with it and what is available online from Whirlpool. Beyond the basics, you're on your own to figure things out.

worst fridge ever
Posted by: momof2 from: orlando on
this is the worst fridge i have ever owned. it makes extremely loud knocking sounds. whirlpool replaced the first one after 6 service calls. the first one didn't make enough ice, and the temperature in the freezer and fridge was not consistent. we liked the fridge overall so had it replaced with the same model. the second one is louder than the first one. it knocks every couple of hours, totally randomly. we were told it is the walls expanding and contracting. i have owed many fridges in my life and none of them have ever been this noisy. i would never recommend this fridge regardless of price point. i am extremely disappointed.

1st one - swing and a miss
Posted by: Fredd0 from: San Antonio on
pros: great price, mechanical operation, looks good
cons: limited shelf configurations, hard to operate water/ice functions in low lighting
i will amend my review when my replacement unit gets here - the first unit had a defect in the door that would allow it to seal, but not completely close. this made the fridge door stick out noticeably more than the freezer door. Also the fridge side will not get cold. i have felt to see if i can feel a leak from the door issue, but i can't feel any cold air seeping from the fridge side. Service has been great as they were going to order me a new door, but since it is now not cooling, I feel better with just exchanging the unit. Don't like to sit around waiting for them to fix a new product... "ain't nobody got time fo dat"

We're on our 2nd fridge. Must have been a bad batch. Condensation on outside of freezer door. 3 repairmen could not fix. Replaced & 2nd fridge has same problem. Want my money back. The ice also shoots across the floor...really hard to get in a glass. Neighbor is on her third fridge. Whirlpool needs to get its act together on this model.

This is the worst purchase ever! I should have bought the best buy warranty. I bought this frig in August and it stopped working in November. The Whirlpool warranty sent a repair service to fix it so I lost all my food and had to take a day off of work because the repair people only give you the service hours of 8-5. They fixed it and it broke 2 months later again same problem. Whirlpool won't give me a new one they will only keep replacing parts on this one . So I spend all this money on a frig that breaks every 2 months and costs me time off of work and groceries.

Good but hard to clean.
Posted by: Lucydog from: on
I like the fridge for the most part but it has a few flaws for me.I was not impressed with the ice dispenser, it is a bit slow and if you want it crushed its very messy when dispensing. I did have to turn the temp way down on it to get it cold enough for my liking, but I did grow up with a food service mother so I might have higher standards. I had to put it on the coldest setting just to get cold soda. The stainless front is hard to clean and it drives me crazy. So far had the best luck with simple green and a lot of elbow grease. I don't even have kids so this is a disappointment for me. I thought the stainless was going to be easier to clean, if you have kids don't get the stainless.

A middle of the road product.

I bought the Whirlpool refrigerator from Best Buy because it was on sale and because Best Buy would deliver, install, and remove my old fridge without charge. I was concerned about other people's reviews on this fridge, but I found that when using the water/ice dispenser, if you use a glass with a mouth wider than a juice glass, ice will not fly out on the floor and water pours into the glass okay. The water does come out warm (like it did with my old fridge) but I dispense ice cubes first and then pour water into the glass. I think the size of the ice cubes is just fine although a little smaller than the ones from my old Samsung refrigerator. I do miss the Samsung's two paddles, one for water and one for ice. I don't like having to manually push a button when switching from ice to water. I think the company should have put an extra shelf in the refrigerator section. There's an empty slot for it. The freezer section could use another shelf, also. -- Yes, this Whirlpool is a little noisier than my old fridge, but nothing that we haven't been able to get use to. As far as fingerprints are concerned, I was told that if you wipe it a couple of times with a stainless steel cleaner when you first get it, the cleaner will help keep finger prints from "sticking" to the surface. That seems to help. My old stainless dishwasher and stove do not have a fingerprint problem like the new refrigerator seems to have. This new stainless product seems to be more "finger print absorbent." This new Whirlpool refrigerator is not built as well as my Samsung was. This new one does not have covers for the hinges on the top, and there is no cover plate at the bottom under the doors to hide the water filter. It's a cheaper model but then again, I didn't spend the money to purchase a more expensive model. Bottom line: It's doing what a refrigerator should do, keep things frozen in the freezer and keep food cold on the other side.
