    • Medal of honor: the Audie Murphy story

Audie Murphy's (1925-71) stunning heroics in World War II - which made him the single most decorated American soldier of the entire global conflict - are well-documented, likewise his transition to movie stardom during the post-war years in the autobiographical war saga To Hell and Back. Less commonly-recognized today is Murphy's brief, one-season foray into small-screen western. Courtesy of NBC, he headlined the 1961 period saga Whispering Smith, a western-detective yarn set in 1870s Denver, Colorado. Murphy starred as Tom "Whispering" Smith, a detective assigned to investigate perpetrations of fraud on the 19th Century railroads. Week after week, he drew from a combination of wit and Colt .45-wielding skill, to bring evildoers to justice. This set features all 20 episodes aired by NBC in 1961, plus 5 episodes that never aired on television; as an added bonus, it also includes the documentary featurette Medal of Honor: the Audie Murphy Story, which recounts the veteran's stunning exploits in making the world safe for democracy. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
