The Bristol Superfreighter Mk.32 was a vital part of post-war aviation, designed to meet the growing demand for car ferry services across the English Channel. Developed from the earlier Bristol Freighter, the Mk.32 featured an extended fuselage, a widened nose door, and increased payload capacity, allowing it to carry up to three cars and 20 passengers. British United Air Ferries (BUAF), one of the leading operators of air ferry services, used the Superfreighter extensively from its base at Lydd Airport, Kent, and by 1967 it was a common sight shuttling travelers and their vehicles between England and continental Europe. While primarily a civilian aircraft, the Bristol Freighter family had its roots in military transport, being used in the late 1940s and 1950s by the Royal Air Force and other air forces for cargo and personnel transport, including supply missions during the Korean War. Its rugged design, high-wing configuration, and ability to operate from short, unpaved runways made it ideal for military logistics. Despite its success, the rise of roll-on/roll-off ferries and improved transport infrastructure led to a decline in demand for air ferry services, and by the late 1960s the Superfreighter was phased out as jet aircraft and more efficient solutions emerged. This 1:72 scale model captures the aircraft’s distinctive features, including authentic BUAF markings, meticulously recreated panel lines, a functioning nose door, and optional loading ramp configurations, making it a perfect addition for collectors and aviation enthusiasts celebrating this unique chapter in aviation history.
