Awesome Near Ideal MP3 + Player
I have had Gen 2 Ipod touch since it came out and have loved it, had a Gen 4 and it had mutliple probs (had 4 of this one as I kept replacing it through warranty due to many problems - 1st one would not work at all, froze at start and would not operate, 2nd one the ear jack had a short in the left ear channel, the 3rd one's home button went bad), so finally on my 4rth replacement I upgraded to Gen 5 Ipod touch and Wow! What an improvement over all portable players I have ever had - Apple and others. The screen is very crisp and looks great, little speaker for audio is improved, so far everything works great, software is excellent. It is speedy to respond, delete files zippity fast, and is very sleek and thin. Feels great in the hand. I am so very glad I updgraded to this version. It has restored my faith in the Apple Ipod touch as the king of portable media players. Just wish the price was more reasonable. The 32 Gig is the price the 64 Gig should be, but you pay a premium to get a premium product. I do love this new Ipod. Replacement ear buds and charging cords are 3X what they should cost. Apple needs to reconsider how they price these kinds of accessories.
1 Month Owned: The squarer corners of the wafer-thin case make for a better grip than previous gens. It's lighter weight and slimmer design make for a slippery feel in your hand, but construction feels solid over all. The back has been less resistant to scratches due to the aluminum construction (similar to the nano), the leash loop is a recessed pop-up design and the ridge around the camera lens does not allow the iPod to lay completely flat. Boot times, launching apps and camera performance are noticeably faster with the dual core chip, double that of the 4th gen. There's no lag when tapping and swiping, response is instant and it handles multi-tasking very well. The bigger screen delivers rich colors and much improved deeper blacks during 1080p video playback. Games greatly benefit from both the faster processor and longer IPS display. Some apps get letter-boxed though when not utilizing the Touch's widescreen capability. It would be nice to see an edge-to-edge design by now though, rather than the familiar spaces at the top and bottom reserved for the home button and camera. The 5MP camera takes really nice everyday photos for a device this small and thin. It can snap pictures as fast as you can press the shutter button and full resolution panoramic picture taking makes for some epic looking photos. Lack of a manual focus feature is a small draw back. Siri's voice command feature is a welcomed addition for thumbs free operation, dictating messages and menu navigation. The included EarPods are more comfortable than their predecessors and sound is better balanced with noticeably improved bass. The EarPods with mic and remote, like those included with the iPhone 5, would have been a nice inclusion. The headphone jack is now located at the bottom next to the connector port, I actually preferred it at the top. The Touch produces very clean sounds with sharp clarity, so much so that it could benefit from a little warmth to round it out. Battery life has been much improved, nearly 10 hours of normal use with wifi turned off. The slimmer "Lightning" connector cable for syncing and charging is less bulky than the previous pin connector, but the Touch's smaller port will require the purchase of an adapter to be compatible with docks and accessories built for previous generations.
Overall, the improvements to the iPod Touch 5th Gen have made it a pocket-sized powerhouse media device. It possesses nearly all the features of the iPhone, aside from talk, a slightly better camera and larger capacity. Tablets may rival the Touch (including Apple's own iPad mini) in price, size and a fuller video watching experience, but try sticking one of those in your pocket...comfortably. 4.5 Stars
Right off the bat , this device is easy to set up.It only took me about 2-3 minutes. With that in mind , you can use this device right away. There are 23 preloaded apps to start with. They are basic (Safari,Mail,Game Center,ect.).The camera is great and very easy to use.I lock my Ipod so having the camera in the lock screen is great. It offers a beautiful display that is responsive and easy to navigate. There are only a few problems I had with the device.First off all , it was expensive.Note : I am writing this September 9th 2013 , the price may drop.Another problem is that it is constantly smudging. This can be solved by getting a screen protector with anti-smudge.One of the biggest problems I had though was the battery life.Listening to music and checking email does not take up too much , but when you are using Internet , watching a video or playing a game then the battery only gives you about 60-90 minutes.Lastly this device uses a different charging cable which - if you are an apple user - can be difficult as you cannot use the same charger for all your devices. That is what kept me from giving this device 5 stars.I hate to leave this on a negative note so I will give you this.It is very compact and very lightweight. It will fit in almost any pocket and also has a loop feature that allows you to add a string so you don't drop it.
