A: I am answering my own question for those wondering about this model. The only difference/improvement vs the identical model now on sale & being discontinued is the processor. This has the 7th gen i7, vs 6th gen. Still dual core. 2.7 ghz vs 2.5. With turbo 3.5 ghz vs 3.1. I was told by a friend of mine with computer tech knowledge, as well as the Best Buy rep, that this updated & slightly improved processor is not easily noticeable now or in the short term future, especially if just web surfing & doing basic video. The BB rep did mention several years down the road is when the difference may be more of a benefit. But still a subtle one since the 6th gen is still a very good i7 & the rest of the computer specs that have not changed (i.e. 16 gb of ram & the ssd) will still perform very well. Since I was in the exchange window I ended up getting this updated model. I did pay full price so $100 more than the discounted one I returned. For me it is worth it, even if it's just peace of mind knowing I have the best version of this computer & very current 7th gen processor.
A: When you first fold the screen back to go into tablet mode, asus' software will ask you "would you like to place into tablet mode", click the "do not ask me again" or "remember this answer" check box and click "Yes". Afterwards mine moves in and out of tablet mode without issue.
A: Separate devices. SSD can be replaced. Be aware that the OS and all programs are installed on the SSD for faster performance.
Q: Does this laptop have the newer Thunderbolt 3 port or the older port?
A: I believe it has the Thunderbolt 3 port, since it has the USB-C interface, not the old Thunderbolt 2 interface that was on Apple laptops prior to 2016. The functionality of the port includes 4k output, as I am using an external Dell 4k monitor at 60hz connected to the USB-C port via an adapter cable.
Q: Can you charge this through the USB C port?
A: You cannot charge the laptop battery through the USB C port.

A: I recently purchased this laptop and it is a beast! I love it! I'm a video designer and it handles the load just fine, the fan can run a tad loud sometimes but it's expected when you are pushing it's hardware the way I do, it's a great computer! I bet your son would benefit greatly from using this in college for engineering!
