I liked this movie. I was interested in watching it because I've been playing Playerunknown's Battlegrounds and it reminded me to finally find it and watch it. Hunger Games is a definite cheap rip off of this. You could never match the intensity that this movie has. I do see that people don't like it because 'the book is better' but honestly never having read the book, the movie is great.

Battle Royale is often compared to William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies. Awesome movie a MUST HAVE

First saw this movie a good 5-6 years ago but lost it somewhere over time. Now, they've released a Blu-ray version with English voicing! The Blu-ray quality is excellent. Felt like I was watching almost a different movie. However, the English voice-casting was terrible except for whoever did Kitano's voice. Felt like I recognized that voice from multiple anime series. Considering the age of this movie, there aren't a lot of people that just stumble across it. Generally, you may have heard of it. I've been referencing anyone who has gone crazy over Hunger Games to check out Battle Royale as I like this one a lot more. There's a novel version that was produced first back in the 90's, but I haven't read that one. They also created a manga series which I loved as well. The manga is definitely not for children as there is a ton more violence, gore, nudity, and psychological terror. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the story touches on many social issues. The disconnect from "adults" to "children" bringes about pretty much total distrust. Luckily (for some) the movie doesn't delve as deep into the issues and gives you a high action blood bath. I was hoping that the Blu-ray version would at least have some special features, but there wasn't really anything. I did like the trailers for Red Line and First Squadron at the beginning, though. Everyone should definitely experience this movie at least once.

Battle Royale is based on the best-selling controversial book, and was originally released in theatres in Japan in 2000. Due to it's graphic violence, it has taken this long to find an American distributor. Fans of this film will tell you that it brings up several moral and social issues, but it's the brilliant way the story is told that has made this film a cult classic. This film has several points of view with regards to personalities and ultimately asks the question, "What would happen to you if - by just wanting to survive - you were left with no choice but to take a life, or two, or three . . . " The film does a great job of helping you keep track of a large number of characters, but no worries as you'll want to watch this film more than once.

By far, "Battle Royale" is one of the best movies you will ever see! Though it differs from the novel, it is still good in it's own right. If you have not seen this, the simple description of the movie does not seem like much: kids being forced, by their government, to kill each other off. However, the movie is not just about senseless killings; there is a lot of character development going on. You get to know who these characters are and what they are about. To me, that's what really makes a movie. I should not need to say much more, as you probably already have searched about this on the internet. With that being said, I do have to down-rate this due to this particular Anchor Bay release. The supposed "Director's Cut" is not a true "Director's Cut". The additional scenes were filmed after the movie's initial release, to capitalize on the film's success. This Anchor Bay release is also not the true "Special Version" (as it is properly called). This release was actually re-edited, using scenes from the original theatrical release, because Anchor Bay did not want to deal with some of the color corrections the "Special Version" required. Another issue, though this "Directors Cut" is the first release to feature an English dub version. Though, the only way to see subtitles for the written Japanese text is to turn on the entire movie's subtitle track, which do not match up with everything spoken in English. If it is easier and cheaper for you to get this version, then, by all means, get it. Otherwise, I would recommend looking for another country's release, as no one else tinkered with it.

Battle Royale is a far superior movie than The Hunger Games.
