I have just been using Windows 10 basic firewall and defender for a while but after investing in a new computer I thought it was perhaps time to acquire a dedicated internet defender, aka a virus/malware checker. I was a bit worried though about some typical issues I have had in the past with virus checkers, they slow things down, you get an inordinate amount of pop-ups, etc. So I did a bit of research and decided on the very reasonably priced Bitdefender. It was nice that it came with 3 licenses to as I have 3 computers to protect, my new computer and two laptops. Installing Bitdefender was very painless. It did recognize on the one computer that I had Norton trial virus checker installed and asked me to click UNINSTALL to remove it to proceed. I did click on uninstall and Bitdefender took care of the rest, which was nice. Once the installation was done the mandatory reboot was in order, but thankfully since my computer is new and fast that only took a few seconds. Once I got back into Bitdefender it had a rather large update to gather and after a few minutes it was current. I ran a full scan and my computer was, as I figured, clean. Considering it's a new computer and has virtually nothing installed on the Windows 10 it better have been clean!! Well my next concern was a bunch of pop-ups or warnings. After using Bitdefender now for a while I can say that does not happen. The program has an auto-pilot function which pretty much does what it says and runs itself in the background. I have also not noticed a bit of slow down either which was another concern on a blazing, fast new PC. One nice feature in Bitdefender I used on it is a button called "Vulnerability scan". Bitdefender looks through the PC for potential problems waiting to happen and issues you advice on how to fix them. For my new PC the only thing it found was that perhaps my wi-fi password was of "medium" strength and should be made more complex. Fair enough, I did not update it because I disagreed but it was impressive it was able to ascertain that and issue you advice on it. Especially considering there are probably a fair amount of newer uses of a PC out there that are on wi-fi without ANY password and that is a huge security issue. Another nice feature is the ability to do remote scans simply by logging into your account online. So you can open your account say on your phone browser at the Bitdefender website and tell your home PC to run a full scan. Not really sure why this is so useful to be honest but I think it's really cool that aspect is there. Bottom line is I'm very happy with Bitdefender Internet Security 2018 and would heartily recommend it. I don't have any experience with it catching viruses or malware but from what I have read it will do that just fine. I can however say that it's easy to install, unobtrusive and does not slow down your PC in the least. About the only downside to it I can think of is a few Best Buy and/or Geek Squad ads at the top of the program but honestly the ads are tiny and I feel that by pointing that out I am just doing so to point out any flaw I can find so it's not that big of a deal. This product is an especially good value if you do not want to pay the big bucks for the more well known names (which typically tend to also be the least safe as that is what hackers target) and don't want to trust your expensive machine to a free program. Recommended!!

After using Defender I will never use any of the free stuff on line again, no more annoying ads popping up all the time, when surfing the web.... it's sweet and peaceful.

I’ve used several other brands of internet security & haven’t been completely satisfied until I found this one. Fantastic product & very easy to set up.

I was happy with Kaspersky. I understood Kaspersky and it understood me, but when Best Buy stopped selling it I figured what the heck and tried something new. Bitdefender may do its job well, but the grief it gives you isn't worth the hassle. It shuts my Quickbooks down (even though I have it whitelisted) and every time I go to pay a credit card it shuts the whole process down. I've spoken to their customer service but their work arounds only help part of the time. If you're someone who is very tech savvy and don't mind having to redo your settings on a daily basis, get Bitdefender. But the rest of us should look elsewhere.

Hi Chris,
I read your review and would love to help troubleshoot.
The program shouldn't shut QuickBooks down at all, and Safepay shouldn’t interfere (even if the user has opted to disable it) if Bitdefender is configured correctly.
Please reach out to me at [email protected] and I’m sure we can work out a permanent solution for you.

I'm a person who surfs the web a lot and always ends up with a bug or two along the way. This is perfect to defend against that. It prereads the website before you open it and let's you know if it's safe or not and it also has a built in keyboard protector whenever you're entering sensitive information like passwords, SSNs, medical information, etc. I also appreciate that it has a file locker so if you have files on your computer that you would like to keep private/safe you can store it in their password protected vault.

I like Bitdefender as it is "lightweight" compared to other security software I have used.

Before installing, make sure you uninstall all older anti-virus programs. Other than that, easy to install and navigate.
