A great deep soul singer with huge talent but very little commercial success, New York based Charles Hodges nevertheless made some truly great records beginning in 1964 for the Phillips tag but really hit his stride recording for Thomas Robinson's independent Alto tag in 1965 and 1966. His first Alto single, InchThere is LoveInch revealed a fully formed singer with a gospel tinged clear tenor voice and a lovely falsetto, but later tracks such as InchYou Were Using MeInch placed Hodges in a class of his own. Hodges pretty much disappeared from the scene by the time the early 1970's hit, but he certainly left behind tracks worthy of his name being more than a footnote in the annals of soul music history.
