This forceful drama stars Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen Prejean, a progressive Louisiana nun who is asked by racist murderer Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn)-who asserts his innocence-to help with his capital case. As the date of his execution approaches, Poncelet (a fictional amalgamation of two real-life criminals) receives spiritual guidance from Sister Helen, who also strives to comfort the families affected.
