I've owned the Epson 5050UB for about 2.5 years at this point and put nearly 600 hours onto the bulb. I got it for $2,500 at that time. After 2.5 years, I still couldn't be happier with this projector and would buy it again at its current price of $3,800. I project onto a 110" Elite Screens white screen with a throw distance of about 19 feet in a light controlled purpose-built theater and the visual quality is striking. Blacks are deep, the contrast makes images pop, and color accuracy is spot-on. I had to use the lens shift with where I was placing it and it gave a perfect result. If you need flexibility with your projector placement, this Epson is a great choice. I use the projector mostly for movie watching. I also have a Sony 85" X950H TV in the same room that I use for video games (much better performance on a TV), live sports, and some movies (the TV has Dolby Vision while the projector only has HDR10) and the projector provides as good of an image with a much larger screen when lights are turned off. I use a hush box for its placement and use ECO mode because it's plenty bright enough at that setting (at least until the bulb starts to dim in the future) and its operation is silent, even when sitting in my back row of seats directly under it. I really couldn't be happier and plan on using this model for years until it eventually dies. I highly recommend this for light-controlled rooms.

Amazing projector, it is super bright even in eco mode, the blacks are very good and the contrast is phenomenal! This is the first projector I've ever purchased and was super hesitant because I was afraid the quality would be a let down compared to a tv...I was very, very wrong. Even on a 120" screen(paired it with an Elite screens sable 2b cinewhite 1.1 gain screen) the image is so much better than my old 4k 75" LG tv. Installation was a breeze due to the huge flexibility of the lens shift, you can put this thing almost anywhere in the room and get it lined up to the screen. To make life even easier I recommend the Strong SM-Proj-XL fine adjust mount, can't get it from bestbuy but can be found online for about $250, a little pricey but will make installation super simple if you are doing it yourself, and any adjustments you need to make in the future due to projector movement from heavy bass or slamming doors is as simple as a couple turns on the adjustment knobs. You will not be disappointing. Spend the money you would have thrown away on a more expensive projector for a nice surround sound system for the full theater experience!

Much brighter picture than Sony or even an Optoma 3200 lumen projector I have seen. Makes it watchable in less than perfect darkness. I still enjoy the extra brightness as well in the dark. Nice sharp picture with its detail enhancement. If you buy a CinemaScope wider screen (maybe 200/300 bucks) the motorized lens will allow you to eliminate annoying black bars at top and bottom in movies such as Avengers. Love this projector. Noticeable upgrade from the 4010 in blacks, color, brightness and contrast. Picture included probably will not do it justice.

I bought this Epson 5050UB projector to replace my 9 year old Epson 6010 PowerLite Cinema Pro projector (in my dedicated home theater), and am very happy with my upgrade. The image is noticeably sharper (using new pixel-shifting technology), and the black areas are noticeably darker (with higher contrast overall).... I highly recommend this projector! :-)

Not a true 4K projector but uses pixel shifting to display in 4K. Nevertheless you will see no diff. Supports HDR 10. Does not support HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. The best frature in this projector is the Lens shifting (horizontal and vertical) with Lens memory so you can adjuat your lens to fit your screen and save the postion. If you have 2 projector screens like I do (2.35:1 and 16:9), you can make use of this lens shifting feature to fit the image into the screen. Note that the projector does not automatically adjust the image to fit the screen based on the incoming video signal. For example, if the incoming video signal feom your receiver or streaming device is 2:35:1 and you want the projector to use a particular lens position, you have to use the projector's remote to pull the stored lens position from memory and the projector doesn't do it automatically. This is OK for me. I installed the EPSON iProjector app to control my projector. Works really well. I used a ceiling mount and it is not an Epson mount. See attached pictures of my home theater.

Used a ceiling mount and a silver ticket 120" screen and this beast of a projector is throwing an awesome picture. We've watched several movies and played hours of games. The picture quality is great, bright enough to not require a dark room (still better with a darker room). Setup was easy enough, with a grid for picture alignment and a flexible mechanical lens adjustment all performed from the remote. Fan noise is minimal. I'm no expert, but the setup was easy, picture looks great and was what we had hoped for.

Great picture, bright great colors it’s mostly used for gaming. It is quite not as loud as our last one, it did take some time to adjust the settings. So far we are happy with it.

Recommended to us by a Best Buy home theater specialist. He seems to have been spot on. We tried a different projector first that seemed to be a better bargain, but it just didn’t fit in our home theater. This one fits great. The greatest advantage is that it was just what we needed. It was able to adjust screen size and dimensions throughout a wide range so we could mount it where the room was built for it and everything worked out well. Image is great. Without the wide range of adjustments, it really leaves you questioning whether or not it will really work until you try (as we did with a previous brand/model). With the Epson, you could have a lot more confidence in what you are getting.

I purchased an epson 5050ub projector for our home theater and it is fantastic. The picture quality is awesome with great definition. The customer service was superb and shipping was super fast. Overall it was a wonderful experience!

Had this for about a year and I absolutely love it. All my friends comment on the amazing picture quality. I’ve got it in a mostly light controlled room on a grey screen and the picture looks great, Never washed out.

This was a disappointing experience on many levels. Not a huge improvement over 10 year old 1080 projector: I have a 10 year old Epson 1080 projector (Powerlite 3020) with the original bulb (2300 hours). The 5050UB is sure a better projector but the jump did not wow us. I kept telling myself that a $ 3000 projector has to be better than a projector I bought 10 years ago. To convince myself to keep the projector, I took movie stills from a 4K movie (Panasonic DB900) and streaming content. Once I put these images next to each other, I knew I have made a mistake. Have a look at the images and draw your own conclusions. It may be a meaningful difference for some, but I struggled to justify spending $ 3000 on a pretend 4K projector. A videophile may discern the differences but from the typical distance movies are watched, I found no compelling reason to keep this projector. A 10 year 1080 projector that costs half as much should pale in comparison to a modern Faux K projector that costs twice as much (without even adjusting for inflation). BB restocking fees: Perhaps it’s been a while since I have shopped at BB but I didn’t realize regardless of the reason, if you return essentially any item, you will be charged a restocking fee of 15 %. That is $ 450! that I had to pay for the privilege of owning this projector for a few days. I understand that perhaps customers have abused the privilege of being able to return items on BB, without penalty, and they were forced to implement these measures. However, I will think twice about buying anything BB. I hope the money BB made implementing 15% restocking fee is more than the business they lost due to customers simply not buying as you will be stuck with an item you don’t like. Overall, for me the image of two brands was tarnished. Epson couldn’t show a meaningful improvement over their 10 year old technology yet charge their customers more than double for the same tech. And, BB needs to be more creative than charging their customers 15 % restocking fees to save themselves from the Amazons of the world. I highly recommend you do not buy any of these faux K projectors if you have an older decent 1080 projector.

My projector is bought in 2022, the bulb seems showing the orange light warning

I bought the 5050ub after many hours of research and 7 years of owning a 5030ub which I put roughly 20,000 hours on before developing a single red line through the picture. With this 5050, after 135 hours, the picture went pink all over. I turned the projector off and back on and the colors went back to normal except the upper right corner now has some pink in it, unacceptable for a $3000 projector. I plan to contact customer service about a repair/replacement, but I am afraid they will trade it out with a refurb, I didn't buy a refurb, I bought new! I will update this review after my dealings with them are done. In the meantime, I wish I had gone with something else.

I am upgrading my 5030ub with this 5050ub. The standard PC image seems to be slightly less sharp with the 4k upscaling on (pixel shift with a smidge of blend I think), but the movie images are better. 3d is slightly brighter (needed for the darker glasses) although ghosting is about the same (may be the glasses I have). When using 4k video WITH HDR color, it is a significant step up. Problem is, on the computer you have to have only one specific Intel processor (I have a I7 4790 intel processor and a ryzen 2400x and neither of them allow UHD playback and I'm not going to upgrade AGAIN just to play these), so I will have to stream 4k video and accept the higher compression that goes with not using UHD discs. BUT, even with this compression it looks great when streaming 4k hdr using a highspeed HDMI cable that supports the higher resolutions (most "highspeed" HDMI cables do so don't buy some very expensive cable for this, most newer ones work just fine). The ability to lens shift from the remote is very nice. It's bigger, I luckily had a bit more expansion left on my cage type projector mount. Summary: I love this new projector. It is definitely a step up when using 4k source (although it only has 1080p then pixel shifts, the added source quality I believe helps with the end quality post pixel shift image). YET I do have a little buyer's remorse as I was only able to sell my 5030 with an extra bulb for a little over $600 and then buy this for $3k, After having it for a few months, I'm not sure it's worth $2,400 for the upgrade from a very good projector that is the 5030ub. Once 4k streaming is more mainstream I may be less remorseful

Set up with an elite screens cinegrey 120 sable frame in an open 20x55x8ft tall rec room; 15’7” throw. With light controlled in the 20x20 theater area, but only blinds to the rear of the room, the screen still looks great. A little about me, I’m a 40ish dad with older teenagers. I love movies, and know a little about theater setups, but I did a lot of research when setting up my space and choosing my equipment. Took a bit to save up and gather the setup piece by piece, and am very discerning when it comes to value for my money. I did a ton of research and movie watching on other projectors both above and below the price for the 5050UB. I came to the conclusion that it can’t be beat in terms of value for performance. Even 3 years after release, this projector is still punching above it’s weight, keeping up with Sony and JVC units costing $2500 more in the categories of lens quality, adjustability/features, color accuracy, contrast, and beating them in brightness, which makes it better for 3D, and ambient light; and beating them in latency, making it useable for gaming. I debated holding out for an upgraded version, such as laser light source, or native 4K, but with the chip shortage, weak market, and a shift to UST projectors (and kids growing up fast), it doesn’t seem to be coming this year, if ever. For a dedicated theater setup, I’m glad I spent the extra $1000 over the epson4010, as the gray levels are far superior on the 5050UB. The $1200 price over even the latest 4K DLP gaming projectors from Optoma and BenQ is justified due to contrast and screen adjustment and lens features. Even though you give up latency and native 4K. A quick note about that, the tech articles saying HDR is more important than 4K are TRUE. Don’t get sucked into having to have native 4K at the expense of brightness/contrast/HDR. You can see a sharper picture, but what good is it if the image is washed out? The contrast on the 5050ub is great with dark shows like Harry Potter, LoTR, and Mandalorian. Even in the evenings when the light is coming through the windows 3D looks great with Avatar, Tron Leacy, and Pacific Rim. These bright colored/high contrast shows are worth watching in 3D over 4K versions. This projector shows 3D without a big dip in brightness. Picky teenagers still appreciate the 3D movies, so hopefully the format stays alive. Do an internet search for best 3d movies. Plenty of reputable tech sites with recommendations. Gaming has worked great for COD zombies on a Xbox oneS in full and split screen. No real noticeable lag. My son and I can get just as far on the projector as we can hooked up to his TV. This isnt scientific by any means, just a testament to usability. I haven’t tried twitch games like smash bros on Switch.
