The lens cover will provide just as much protection (if not more so) to the front lens element as well as the entire front section of the lens, including the sides where traditional hoods and caps do not protect.
The flexible yet sturdy material will fit a variety of shapes, including standard round hoods as well as more elliptical 'petal-type' shades.
The lens cover will fit most lenses, even with the hood left on! Simply slip the lens cover over the lens and/or hood, draw the drawstring tight and cinch it down using the included cord lock toggle.
