I have been using this device to play my ancient (40+ years old) cassettes. I have played a couple dozen of them without encountering any significant problems. The tapes are a variety of lengths (mostly C60 & C90). This was done on one pair of (not-supplied) batteries. I mostly used my own earphones so I cannot comment on those supplied. The built in speaker was perfectly adequate. I have not recorded anything; I only listened to the radio to make sure it received my favorite "oldies" station, and it did. My only complaint is that the volume control is not particularly sensitive; it seems to toggle between too loud and too soft. If I had one desired feature it would be for the "auto-stop" feature to work when rewinding or fast-forwarding. The discounted price (with bonus) I paid made this an exceptionally good value.
