It will not get too hot for a nightstand. Induction chargers are designed to work with cell phones with thin plastic cases so heat transfer is minimal.
Full charging output requires (at minimum) a 20-watt wall charger or USB-C connection. It will not charge legacy phone models or devices incapable of wireless charging.
