The story is well written, well acted, and well paced enough to make you wanting more by the end of it

Neo-noir with some of the sharpest dialogue you'll find, RDJr makes a triumphant return before donning an iron suit to play detective in a series of events that turns him into a clueless, bumbling Phillip Marlowe. Val Kilmer possibly outshines him in the subtlest ways with every expression & bit of dialogue. Easily Shane Black's (writer/director) finest hour. Michelle Monaghan is a pure delight as you wrestle with liking or hating her. One of the most quotable films you could ever see that turns the detective noir/action flick every which way.

Shane Black's movies have their own brand of comedy, usually related to realistic, haphazard-like action that inherently make fun of conventional action movies while also suggesting how cliche typical action movies are. Even the unique narration subtly points out how standardized and utilitarian narration typically is in films and provides insight to a character whose thoughts aren't as polished as the typical narrator/movie hero.
