Marshall makes beautiful speakers and amps that are capable of great sound quality - but the key word is capable, from a hardware perspective only. You'll need to use their app for this speaker, which uses only bluetooth LE, while this speaker and all others that they make use only archaic traditional bluetooth. So while your phone might connect to it (and all the notifications your phone gets - you can't make it the primary device), the Marshall app won't. This is a problem in 2 ways: 1 it decimates the sound quality and means you can't adjust anything because you need the app to do that. 2 as many reviewing the app with other speakers of theirs that it did work with (or who have iphones/different devices): the sound quality is dependent on software updates to not nuke anything, and it seems Marshall is incapable of hiring an engineer with even high school level skills. Basically it's like paying for a nice gaming PC, brand new parts, beautiful design, but it comes preinstalled with so much malware it's unusable....but in bluetooth speaker/app form. If this speaker at least had the option of being wired (not ideal but means that you're not dependent on a phone app) or had some basic controls on the back, then I'd honestly keep it despite the cost and lost functionality. It doesn't though, and it's such a disappointment, because I can tell from the design of the physical speaker that this was designed to last....unfortunately some exec clearly wanted an app just to have an app and advertise other Marshall products, without intending on that app working. Because it's relevant: I use a Samsung Galaxy S23 as my phone (so latest model flagship android phone at the time of this purchase), but I have the same issue trying to download the app and troubleshoot from an ipad to see if Marshall simply isn't an option for Android users (still a major design flaw when there's not physical workaround).

Hello there, thanks for your review. We'd like to clear up a few things in your review. The speaker can be used with the app for additional features, however, the Emberton II speakers can connect to your phone and are fully functional without the Marshall Bluetooth app. The Emberton II speakers do not have malware installed on them: you may have experienced an issue with them but many customers are using them without any issues and enjoying them. The issue with the app is on Google's end: Android 14 will not work with Bluetooth Class and Bluetooth LE at the same time (for products with a certain Bluetooth chipset). Our Product Team is in touch with Google and hopes the Android firmware will be updated to work with Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth LE at the same time so that our customers can once again enjoy the additional features offered by the Marshall Bluetooth app.

Garbage. I had a Google Pixel 6, and none of the Marshall android App features worked. No tuning, no sound adjustments, equalizer, treble, bass, nothing. You just have to use Bluetooth to pair to the speaker with no use of any of the advertised features. All you get is volume control. This is a known issue, and when you open the app, you are immediately notified of issues with Android 14. The very newest version of Android that was released on October 4, 2023 will not work with this speaker. Nowhere in the product listing do they share that they know about this issue, before you buy. They wait until after they have your money to reveal this crucial fact. Is there a firmware update? Are their developers working on it?Nope. They do not care. I just got a Pixel 8a, and it refuses to pair at all. Pricey Bluetooth speaker and it's basically a paperweight.

About Android 14: it is true that it is problematic, but the fault is not with the Marshall app. Android 14 is not able to run both classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE at the same time. In order to connect to the headphones and the app, your device will use both classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE. The issue has been identified and the expectation is that Android 15 will resolve this issue. It is unfortunately out of Marshall's hands, it is an Android 14 limitation.

I would give it no rating but you insist on selecting one, so one it is. I returned it unopened because it was shipped to me from your "returns dept". I ordered a new speaker, not a returned item. I repurchased it from a competitor for $30 less.

Dead on arrival. Open-Box but no one checked to make sure it would charge. When I returned it, there were no more Open-Box and the price went up from $99 to $170. Manage on duty said that Open-Box items are "hit and miss". So much for "excellent rating". Bought used on Amazon and it works great!

Bought the speaker in December and noticed that the speaker drains battery when off. From full charge to dead within a few weeks even when not in use. Went through all the recommended troubleshooting and now, after all that, Marshall is demanding I send the unit back to be examined. If they find no problem according to them, I need to pay to have my speaker returned. I have never experienced such poor customer service. Any other company would have shipped a replacement pronto. I had a minor issue with JBL headphones a few years back and they replaced almost by overnight mail. Do not buy!

Hi David, thank you for your review and feedback. All Marshall products have a 12-month warranty to cover manufacturing defects. As your speaker is within the warranty period, it needs to be collected to the Service Centre for an evaluation and repairs. Repairs are completed by trained product technicians and with brand new manufacturer's parts. Rarely is a customer required to pay for the return shipment, even if no defect is found. We have worked through troubleshooting with you and agree that it sounds like a defect has occurred; it doesn't sound like there is reason to be concerned about no defect being found. We hope to soon receive the speaker and have it back to original working condition so that you can continue to enjoy the Emberton II. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience of this.

I bought it with the box open in excellent condition and the cell phone didn't work. I had to stay close to the speaker to avoid losing connection.
