Q: What is the difference between this special edition and the "regular" one? Other than price obviously, and is it worth the price difference?

A: The reason nikon gave that vague answer was because mechanically there is no difference. Both are identical optically. The only difference is in the cosmetics; the added retroness feel to it, matching the DF style. If you want to spend the extra moneys just to get the retro hipster look as you take pictures then the "special-edition" is for you!
