Q: Is this the 2nd generation hue bulb or the 1st?
A: This is the 2nd gen bulb. In my opinion it is inferior to the older ones, it can do three color tones well and some not at all.
Q: Can these bulbs be used with a lutron wall dimmer switch?
A: You would not want to use them on a dimmer because the bulb itself has built in computer logic to choose color hue, temperature color and brightness. The redundancy of a dimmer would sacrifice the automation which is the point of the product.
A: You will nee to download the Hue app to a smart phone or tablet to change the colors. I found it a little cumbersome, but still nice to be able to change colors.
Q: how many bulbs come in the box?
A: One bulb is in the box.
A: I did just as you described. I bought 4 of the color version bulbs, I already had the bridge from a previous purchase. I have all 4 color bulbs in a ceiling fan. Honestly, I rarely use the color rather just the white, they illuminate the living room very well. I use it in conjunction with the Amazon Echo and love the convenience of being able to turn on/of dim all by voice.
A: Best Buy has Gen. 3. And yes, they are better. The Gen. 2 was on sale

A: Yes... I'm using one on my front porch with out any issues
