Thanks for the statement. This adapter only converts HDMI output → component video (5-wire) input. It cannot work in the opposite direction. Converting component → HDMI requires an active scaler/encoder box designed specifically for that purpose, which is a different type of device.

JohnC, this adapter cannot convert a DVD player’s component output into HDMI. It only works HDMI → component, not the reverse. To connect an older DVD player with component output to an HDMI-only TV, you would indeed need a component-to-HDMI converter, which actively converts and scales the signal.
