The main soundbar is pretty impressive. Loud, great clarity, good (but not overwhelming) bass that doesn't sound muddy/muffled, also thanks to the easy Samsung app for EQ controls. My problem comes with the rear speakers. After owning this system since January 2025 (6 months now) and watching countless shows and movies, listening to music and playing games, I can confidently say the rear speakers are incredibly lackluster and disappointing. They completely lack bass, and when connected to a powered TV and the system is turned on, they have a faint hiss if you listen closely, which isn't the case with the main soundbar. To be honest, for the nearly $1,100 I paid for this system, I regret my purchase and wish I spent more on the Sonos Arc. At least then, I wouldn't be hyper-focused on the mediocre rear speakers. If you plan on only buying the soundbar + woofer, I highly recommend!

Hi Jemowonder,
Thank you for taking a moment to review the HW-Q850D Soundbar.
Please know, there are various settings you can adjust to improve your experience with the rear speakers.
You can adjust the volume of the rear speakers by using the remote included with the connected soundbar. Press the CH LEVEL button on the soundbar remote, then select REAR LEVEL and use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume within a -6 to +6 range.
Additionally, make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If you are using a format such as PCM, you may experience decreased volume to the rear speakers. Select Bitstream, Auto, or Pass-Through as these settings will allow the TV to send the correct channels to the rear speakers.
I hope these tips help to enhance your audio enjoyment. Should you need further assistance with this issue or have any questions, please contact Samsung Customer Support. Sound is pretty good, but the wireless rear speakers do have to wired to a remote receiver. Not really wireless. Only hear rear speakers with listening to a Dolby atmos programming.

LarryG,
Thank you for purchasing the Samsung HW-Q850D Soundbar System which comes with a subwoofer and rear speaker kit. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts about the wireless description of the rear speakers and performance.
Occasionally, customers have trouble hiding and running speaker wires from the front of the room (where their soundbar is) to the back of their room (where they have their rear speakers). The Rear Speaker Kit eliminates that hassle. Connect the rear speakers to its wireless module and place these three in the back of your room. One wire is required to connect each rear speaker to the wireless module. Then plug in the power cable to the module. The “wireless” convenience is in connecting your soundbar and any other speakers at the front of the room to the rear speakers – this can now be done via Wi-Fi through the wireless module, eliminating any clutter of long wires running the length of your room.
By design, the surround speakers are supposed to simulate sounds happening behind the viewer. Therefore, most of the time the surround channels are only used for ambient sounds, which are naturally lower in volume.
However, there are a few settings you can change to adjust the surround effect to your preference:
1) Make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If the source is not capable of surround, then set the Surround mode to OFF on the Soundbar by pressing the Surround button on the remote.
2) If the source has surround channels, select the desired Sound Mode from the Soundbar remote.
3) Turn off Dynamic Range Control. This is done by pressing and holding the Sound Mode button while the Soundbar is in standby mode.
4) Increase the volume level of the surround speakers using the CH LEVEL button on the Soundbar remote control. Press the button on the soundbar remote, then select REAR LEVEL and use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume within a -6 to +6 range.
I hope these tips help to enhance your audio enjoyment. Should you need further assistance with this issue or have any questions, please contact Samsung Customer Support. Entry level for improving soundscape. There are far better home theater options but they get expensive. However I do love this in the bedroom for some basic atmos support and a drastic improvement over tv speakers. Does not compare to a proper 7.2.1 system or a 5.2.1 set up, even a basic 2.1 stereo set up with proper bookshelf’s/floor standing speakers blows this out of the water in terms of quality. Recommended as basic upgrade to tv speakers, would work great for an apartment or bedroom where noise was a concern. For proper enthusiasts- do research into a proper system with an AVR.

Purchase this as an open box item. It was listed as excellent and having all components. When I unboxed it at home it was missing a sync module for the speakers, hdmi, and a remote. I got a great deal on the set, I was going to keep it and just purchase the missing module, but couldn’t find the module for sale so i returned it. The return process was simple the employee that assisted with the return was very professional, checked to see if they had the module available in the store, but couldn’t find it. He processed my return and recommended a few other options. Great customer service.

Thank you for reviewing Samsung’s HW-Q850D Soundbar. I’m sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience connecting the Rear Speaker Kit.
When powered on for the first time, the rear speakers should automatically connect wirelessly. If the auto-connection process fails, you can try manually connecting the rears to the soundbar.
To setup the wireless rear speaker kit included with the soundbar, first use the color-coded speaker wires to connect the rear speakers to its wireless module and place these three in the back of your room. Plug the wireless receiver module power cord into an electrical outlet and into the wireless receiver module to turn on the wireless receiver module.
Press and hold the ID SET button on the back of the wireless module for at least 5 seconds or until the blue light starts blinking. Turn off your soundbar and press the Up button on the remote for 5 seconds. The ID SET message will appear on the soundbar for a short time and then disappear. After the ID SET process, the soundbar power is automatically turned on. The LINK LED indicator stops blinking and glows a solid blue when a connection is established between the soundbar and the wireless receiver module.

I gave 3 stars because I prefer a receiver with 2 front and back speakers with a center and a sub woofer. The sound is much better and fuller. On the other hand if you want something simple to connect and take up very little room the sound bar is the way to go. With a Samsung tv you only need one remote which is a plus.

Before performing the manual connection procedure, check whether the power cables for the Soundbar and subwoofer are connected properly and make sure that the Soundbar is turned off.

Sound cutes out once in awhile, but when its working its great

LordDuctape,
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the sound occasionally dropping from your HW-Q850D Soundbar. You may first want to check the cable connection of the soundbar to the TV or external device to ensure it is secure, and properly connected to the correct port.
In addition to checking the connections of the soundbar, please make sure your soundbar is using the latest firmware Version. Updating the firmware on your soundbar gives you all the benefits of the latest improvements. You can update your firmware by using a USB device.
You may also want to initialize your soundbar by pressing the - and + (volume) buttons on the top of the soundbar at the same time for at least 5 seconds. “INIT OK” appears on the display and then the Soundbar is reset. Please know, this will reset all settings on the soundbar back to default; any sound adjustments will need to be performed again.
Should you continue to experience audio dropouts, and are connected wirelessly, please use the included cable to connect the soundbar to the TV. Using a wired connection instead of wireless often eliminates the issue entirely and improves the user experience.
I hope these tips help resolve your issues.

Hi Emily,
We appreciate you taking a moment to review the Samsung HW-Q850D Soundbar.
Updating the firmware on your soundbar gives you all the benefits of the latest improvements. When the Soundbar is connected to the Internet, Auto Update allows software to update automatically even when the Soundbar is turned off. You can also update by using the SmartThings app.
If not connected to the internet, you can download it onto a USB device, and then upload it to your soundbar - no wireless connection required. Connect the USB drive that contains the update firmware to the SERVICE port of the Soundbar.
1.Go to the Samsung Electronics website (www.samsung.com) → click on the “Support” option in the upper left corner.
2.Click on “Manuals & Software” from the pop-up list > TVs & Home Theater > Home Theater > Select your model
2. Download the firmware file (USB type).
3. Unzip the file to create a folder with the file name.
4. Store the created folder in a USB and then connect it to the Soundbar.
5. A sequence of “UPDATE” > “BYE” > “ON” will appear on the display 3 times. This will take around 6 minutes.
- During update, do not turn it off or remove the USB.
- If “UPDATE” does not appear on the display window, remove the power cord from the Soundbar and then reconnect it.
- When the latest version is installed, no update is performed.
- Depending on the USB type, update may not be supported.
6. After the 3 cycles are complete, the Soundbar will restart and last source used will appear on the display for about 20 seconds and then it will go off (“UPDATE” > “BYE” > “ON”) 3 times “D.IN” > off
If your soundbar fails to update or is experiencing problems, please contact Samsung Customer Support. Just give us a call at 1-800-SAMSUNG (Ask for Soundbars), 8AM - 12AM EST, 7 days a week. Our Live Chat agents are also available by clicking on the ‘Support’ link on our website.
