If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Do not buy this SSD if you value your time. I have wasted a whole week trying to copy files into this SSD. It artificially inflates your files and makes a 250 GB file transfer take up ~3 TB. I found other folks reporting this type of issues without any real solution. Likely to be a hardware malfunction. I recommend buying an SSD from a better company like Samsung. I'm returning my SanDisk SSD at this moment.

this is my 3rd & most recent sandisk ssd drive. i liked the other two but needed more memory so bought another 4tb just under a year ago. i noticed this one quickly warmed up to be pretty hot but didn't think too much of it & just made sure to stop using it & let it cool down before using it again. but about a month ago, it started randomly disconnecting. i thought it may be a loose port on my laptop or something, & gave it the benefit of the doubt. but then i started getting errors when trying to move files, my computer started bringing up 'unrecognizable device' & similar messages; now every time i use it. looking into it more, it sounds like this is a common issue & is likely on its way towards being totally unusable. ~$600 & less than 1 year of use & i'm scrambling to find a more reliable external drive to try to back this up before i lose everything. i have 2 other sandisk ssd drives that are older & i use less frequently, but i'm worried it's only a matter of time before those start failing, too. so, so disappointed.

We're sorry to hear about your experience. Intermittent disconnections and detection errors can sometimes be related to the connection, cable, port, or firmware. We recommend trying a different cable, port or computer to help isolate the issue. Please also ensure the firmware is up to date (https://support-en.sandisk.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/52555). Initially, I was really happy with my purchase - sizable storage capacity, fast, and small form factor, all-in-one. I was planning to partition it and use it for both storing files and backing up my MacBook Pro. However, as I've since learned, this product from SanDisk was very shoddily put together, with poor quality components, etc. Another reviewer, Duped, mentioned an Ars Technica article entitled, SanDisk’s silence deafens as high-profile users say Extreme SSDs still broken, from August 8, 2023. I highly recommend everyone to read that article, as well as another article from Ars Technica titled "SanDisk Extreme SSDs are “worthless,” multiple lawsuits against WD say." The second article lists the "few" drive models that Western Digital, themselves, admitted are faulty: SanDisk Extreme Portable 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00) SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 4TB (SDSSDE81-4T00) SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 2TB (SDSSDE81-2T00) SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 1TB (SDSSDE81-1T00) Western Digital My Passport 4TB (WDBAGF0040BGY). This item is the first one on the list (SanDisk Extreme Portable 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00)). I wish I had known about these issues then since i would have returned it immediately.

I want to love these drives. They're fast, tiny, silent, and the price is right. But after my first couple months with two of these 4TB's, I would never buy a Sandisk again. I bought them specifically as shuttle drives for video shoots, and have also used them as edit drives with Premiere Pro. Maybe the third time I transferred with them, I had a strange experience where one of them simply unmounted from my laptop (14" MacBook M1 Pro). Didn't think much of it, chalked it up as maybe I jiggled a cable or something. A few weeks later, I came back from lunch and my Premiere project had crashed. Again, didn't think much of it, happens all the time. This week however, the real nightmare happened. Premiere crashed right in the middle of some very time consuming work, and the drive suddenly lost write access. I had to cycle it a few times for it to even come back online. Now having done and excessive amount of research, I see the rumblings on Reddit and elsewhere that these issues are not at all uncommon with these drives, and there's even a lawsuit about people losing their data. There's no way I would trust it with even low priority material after a failure like mine, and to see it so widespread is incredibly disheartening. For context, I'm a full time film editor and do small video projects in my spare time. I immediately formatted both these drives in APFS for working on my Macs, and only ever used the included cables. There is no reason why they should be failing this soon aside from a defect. Now of course I'm passed the return period for Best Buy, so it'll be a good test of the supposed 5 year warranty to see what happens next. I've since moved my project to a Samsung T7 and have had no issues the last few days. Can't give that one a glowing review just yet since it's early days, but it's definitely just as fast and portable, and runs noticeably cooler. Steer clear of these Sandisks and look at other brands.

Probably could've been a great little SSD. Unfortunately, the pre-loaded security software insisted that I create a username and password before I could access the main drive. I tried 3 - yes, 3 times to reformat the drive. Every time I reconnected the drive, it was magically back, insisting I install it before I could use the drive. This was supposed to be a photo archive for an elderly lady, and I knew that if I couldn't use it without using the security software, neither could she. The other brand I replaced it with is working perfectly.

We sincerely apologize for the continued frustration. The fact that the security software keeps reappearing after multiple reformats is an unusual issue that should not happen. Very unstable after 6 months of use. Almost lost all data. When I load data until it only has 1.9 GB of empty spaces, it becomes very hot. Then, the data is very unstable, and cannot be either transferred out or deleted.

We're sorry to hear about the instability you've experienced with your drive. Performance issues can sometimes occur if the drive is nearly full, leaving limited space for stable transfers. Failed after three months of gentle, at-home use – still in its original packaging. The failure necessitated hundreds of dollars in data recovery, and now, the need to buy replacement data storage. After sharing with other professional photographers, I've heard multiple reports of widespread issues with this particular disk within the last few months – sounds like a bad batch. I wish there was a way to get reimbursed for this to purchase a dependable replacement instead. It is not worth the risk to me to try this product again, and I regret spending so much money on it.

Drive became unreadable on my Macbook months ago. It wouldn't load. Sandisk provided a firmware update to correct the problem, but it has a note: "Critical: Ensure to create and verify a backup of all critical data to another location or device before updating the firmware on any drive. " How does one back up the disk before updating, and how does one update the disk if you can't load it on a Mac? The update that SanDisk provided must be implemented using a PC, specifically "on a Windows 10 or 11 computer". How does that work? You bother your friends with a PC or go to a tech support station at Best Buy or elsewhere to do this, costing money, and perhaps losing some files. I can go on or you can read the Ars Technica article: "SanDisk's Silence Deafens as High-Profile Users Say Extreme SSDs Still Broken"

There's been issues with this drive since a week after I bought it. It keeps disconnecting itself, stopping my workflow and forcing a restart. I have several of the same drive that work fine (purchased from other stores than best buy) but this one in particular is faulty and I haven't had the time/don't want to deal with the headache of getting a refund and also having to move like 3 tb of files that I need for active projects :/

Buyer beware, this 4TB SSD is prone to corrupt out of the blue and become unmountable. It would disconnect randomly while the mac was on standby and then the files would be corrupted after. Went through 3 rounds of severe data loss with no backups as the backup was also on a sandisk that corrupted. Extremely disappointed in the brand after being a WD user. This product is should be recalled

I just got the product. But haven't use it long enough to give a good or bad yet for the price that i paid for over $300++ But I'd like to give a feed back on customer service onside, I bought the product online for pickup in store. I got the product, a few days later the price when down, I went to the same store I had pickup the product and tried to do the price match, I use credit card to purchase this product, but close the account. At the return counter I asked for store credit instead the lady told me I only have one option which is put it back to my credit card even I told her, the credit card close. I end up with called Best buy customer service and they told me I can do store credit, I went back to the store again, this time they told me they can do store credit, but unfortunately the product was pass 14 days after purchase, can't get store credit. So I overpaid due to lack of knowledge from Best buy.

Purchased a 2TB ScanDisk SSD, which worked well after one year of use. Purchased this 4TB ScanDisk SSD on 12/31/22, and it crashed the first time on 2/28/23, and now again on 4/19/23; lost all of it’s data both times. I have lost tons of GoPro volleyball videos that were taken for my daughter’s college recruiting efforts. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT!!!

It never worked. It spontaneously ejects itself. Didn’t realize it didn’t come with Best Buy Protection so Best Buy wouldn’t help me. The company did allow a replacement but it’s much easier with BB protection.

SanDisk Pro keeps abruptly failing. The drive will unmount and you will not be able to get it to mount again, despite showing up in Disk Utility. You can sometimes recover it using DiskDrill's filesystem rebuild, but occasionally that does nothing. It persists with any filesystem type. This happened just days after using it. Search it online and you will see how common this issue is...

This is the worst ssd I’ve ever had to deal with. If you are a Mac user, don’t purchase this trash ssd. It’s not compatible. Randomly deletes data and unmounts itself. You can’t re mount it no matter what without reformatting and losing all your data. I thought I had a defect but the second replacement has the same issues. This is not Mac compatible

Do not purchase. Device will fail and you may loose date. Luckily I was able to return within my purchase window. The device will unmount or eject automatically and at random making it difficult to depend upon. If device is being accessed during this period, you may loose data.
