Since when did they start making flash drives in this small form factor. Such a great idea! I'm going to be using it as temporary backup for some of my photography files.

I bought this because I generally run multiple different programs on various computers; I felt like each year I had to double my USB size (32>64>128>256). I have the 128 version of this drive and while I have not ran tests, I can tell you that this one is a bit slower. However, at this price point of $60 I can not argue the extra 20 seconds on an iso file. There is one negative, the text on the usb (IE. Red "Sandisk" writing and the back where you can write your name will fade away after a couple of weeks in a pocket, every version of this thumb drive does this)

I really like that the Sandisk USB 3.0 256gb flash drive has plenty of space for all of my music files, videos, and documents. Even though it is stated as 256gb drive, actual available storage space is 233gb. Build quality on the drive is poor. The all plastic enclosure is loose and wobbly and it gives the impression that it can break off if inserted or removed with force. You’ll need to handle this drive with care. I performed a non-scientific test of write speed. I transferred 27 gb of music files to the flash drive and it took 27 minutes, so 1gb/min. The drive does become warm during file transfer, but the amount of heat generated appears normal. The flash drive comes with two useful software to enable file security and access. The first is Sandisk’s Secure Access Vault which is a file encryption software. You simply create a password and encrypt your files by dropping them into the Sandisk Vault. They are then electronically locked or encrypted. Nobody will be able to access your files without the decryption password. The only way to access the files is to enter your password in the Vault. Another handy tool is Sandisk Flashback. Flashback automates the backup process by transferring the entire contents in the flash drive to Sandisk’s Cloud. You’ll be able to view and download the contents in the flash drive online without having the flash drive physically present. This becomes handy if you either left your flash drive at home or, worse, lost your flash drive entirely. You can recover all of your backed up content online. You can also share files with anyone by simply sending them a link to access the files in your Sandisk Cloud without having to attach large files onto an e-mail. In order for all of this to function, Flashback software needs to be installed locally on your desktop or laptop computer to upload files to Sandisk’s Cloud server. You’ll also need to create an account on the Sandisk Flashback website to access your files in Sandisk’s Cloud server. Flashback is free for the 1st year, after that you’ll need to pay an annual subscription fee to continue access to your backed up files in the Sandisk Cloud. I’ve attached a picture showing the subscription pricing at the time of my review. One limitation of the cloud backup feature is that backing up to the Sandisk cloud only works if you have the flash drive connected to a computer that has the Flashback software installed. In practice, there are numerous instances where you’ll be using the drive at a workstation, say at work computer or a friend’s computer, where the Flashback software isn’t installed. The flash drive becomes a regular, run of the mill storage drive. There’s nothing wrong with this, you just simply need to be aware that no Cloud back up is being performed until you plug the flash drive back into your computer that has the Flashback software installed. Another limitation is that if you have files encrypted in the Sandisk Vault, those encrypted files will naturally remain encrypted, as they should, when backed up to the Sandisk Cloud. However, there is no way for you to access the encrypted files online in the Sandisk Cloud website since you won’t be able to decrypt the files without the Sandisk Vault. The encrypted files can only be decrypted locally from within the flashdrive. All in all, this is a decent high capacity flash drive with some extra bonus features for securing your files and automatically backing up your flash drive to the cloud. I would recommend the flash drive.

Compact and sturdy. With enough space to hold all data from my laptop. It was a bit difficult i.e. tight to eject from pc.

I purchased this item primary because of the price and capacity. I have a ton of USB 2 sticks but this one seems promising. I have used it pretty heavily in the last month. - Bootdisk for reloading my MacOSX. - Storing backup software to reload while I am offline on new systems - I have even used it for temp caching on a data mining project due to the device I was currently on it was very limited on ram/hdd space. It held impressively and did not unmount under very heavy load. I was very tempted to buy a few more but after since I primary either have it in my laptop bag or key-chain it opens very easily (its obviously designed to be on a key-chain and mobile has the loop on it). It Drives me nuts. That is the only reason I took off a star. Yes I know they have a carrying pouch but I am not very interested in buy another product for something I feel should be handled on here. It should not be that difficult to add either a locking mechanism such as a pocket knife has or perhaps stiffen up the sensitivity of it opening up. Other than that I would strongly recommend the product for the price and quality. If I was not so mobile I would own several more!

Nice USB thumb drive with a large capacity and good speed. The only drawback is that, for a modern thumb drive, it's large. Great price and no performance problems.

High storage capacity and decent speed for a USB 3.0 memory stick.

Easy to use, Great storage Low pricing Easy to carry

Works well but it’s a bit fat and slightly awkward. Has a weird curve to the design. Use it on my TV and it’s more difficult than it should be to insert it. Other than that works really well and price when on sale is great.

It is fast at saving files. I wished it had a cap and didn’t slide as sometimes it slides back in when trying to plug it in. Otherwise very happy with this and the amount of storage it has.

The size of the unit is JUST right and rugged enough for daily use. It does tend to heat up a bit when used in a USB 3.0 port with a significant amount of file transfer (30-50 GB) at one time. Good price for 256GB unit.

Really needed an additional flash drive. I found two that I was comparing when one of the sales techs asked if I needed help as to which one was the best. He pointed to this one, so that is what I purchased. So far, it works just fine.

The SanDisk - Ultra 256GB USB 3.0 Type A Flash Drive holds a large amount of data and is better than average in recording speed. It is small in size and easy to handle. Good value for price.

I purchased two of these and they are advertised as being 256GB. I used h2testw which is a utility that writes blocks of data to an empty USB flash drive and then verifies how many blocks of data are really on the drive. I relocated the software from both flash drives and tested them empty. The first drive tested at 236870 Mb, the second drive tested at 237861 Mb. So that is 236.8 GB and 237.8 GB. Both over 15 GB short of the advertised size. These drives are formatted and locked to FAT32 so people who don't know any better can't reformat them to NTFS which supports "journaling" and would shorten the life of the drive but I can't see the encryption to accomplish that consuming 15 GB of space. Still a decent sized flash drive for storing movies no larger than the FAT32 limitation of 4 GB. And for permanent storage of pictures and files.

Bought this to hold some digital video to play it on my smart TV. The files copied quickly without issue and played flawlessly.

I have had this for about six months now. It works great. I use it as my primary storage because I do not trust hard drives (too many problems previously) and my internet is not always the best so I cannot rely on cloud storage. It does heat up if continually using. If you are working on one thing or it is just in the port and you are not always using it, it will cool down. But be careful.
