A: The drive comes with all three plates and you can slide one off and another one back onto the drive. So once you have the drive in your hands, yes, you can pick with one you want.

Q: Can this also be used as an external SSD? I have a friend who really wants one for her laptop, but I'm unsure if her internal SSD can be swapped.

A: Yes and no, it is an m.2 drive so you would have to have an open m.2 external usb dock. You cannot have an encased one because the heatsink on this unit is too large. Also the LED lightsaber is powered so that would not come on. I don't suggest going through the time to try to make this work, although possible, there are much easier solutions.
