Q: How far apart are the legs on this TV
A: 55” at the widest part, 34” at narrowest.
Q: What are the major differences between this and the 850f?
A: 850f is an IPS panel (except for maybe the 85" version--that size often uses a VA panel while the others are IPS). IPS sacrifices contrast for viewing angle, so in a dark room, blacks appear grayish, but the picture doesn't wash out as much when viewed from the side. All 900f are VA panels, which have superior contrast in a dark room, but sacrifice viewing angles. Additionally, the 900F has local dimming, which further enhances its ability to display deep blacks. It also has a bit of an upgraded video processor, which also allows it to do Dolby Vision in addition to HDR10 (which the 850F supports), and the 900F has a slightly wider color gamut (although both have wide color gamuts). The 850F is bright enough for HDR to look good, but the 900F is one of the brighter 2018 LCD models. The 850F, except for maybe the 85", which might be a VA panel, is best suited for a relatively bright room with wide seating arrangements. The 900F is a step up TV and is superior, although the 85", if VA, would close the gap somewhat.
A: The 940E is a 2017 model, the 900F a 2018 model. Both have full array backlighting, the X1 extreme chip which is Sony's top of the line processor, and Dolby Vision HDR once Sony updates the 900F with new software. As far as differences: the 940E is going to have slightly better contrast and local dimming (overall brighter whites and deeper blacks), whereas the 900F has better motion processing. The "response time" component of motion in the 940E has gotten less than impressive reviews meaning some people have experienced some "trailing" or "ghosting" effects from fast action like sports. As a 940E owner, I personally haven't experienced any motion issues whatsoever, even while playing fast action video games. I can't comment on sound since I use a soundbar but they should be comparable. For a more in depth comparison, check out the side-by-side on rtings.com.
A: The Extreme 1x processor that was in last years high end models are now in this one. Also back lit not edge lit. Better contrast, new HDR with scene mapping by Sony. Dolby Vision is supported in software only and is not in it when purchased as they have stated it will be a firmware update "soon" as per CES 2018, much like last year's model got the update later. All round better performer than it's little brother the 850f.
A: Nope. 1080p from cable or direct tv look great on my x900f 4k. The upscaler does a great job. SD stuff (480) can look a little rough but no different than on my older 1080 tv. Make sure to calibrate your settings and you should be good. I start with the "cinema pro" setting in video settings and tweak from there. Avoid all that "motion smoothing" crap if you can help it.
A: Actually, now that i own the set.. it seems you do NOT have to put it into gaming mode manually.. You just have to have it set to auto 24p sync picture mode.. set it to gaming mode Once.. then after that anytime you use Amazon or Netflix or a home theater pc for 24hz or 60hz video playback, it switches to cinema home mode.. then when back to a console it switches to gaming again, works well
Q: What is the height between the base (where the stands support the tv) to the bottom edge of the tv?
A: 2.75 inches... if you are thinking of putting a sound bar under it the only one that fits fully under is the Sony HTZ9F and in my opinion the best sound bar option anyway as it is 3.1 with a WIRELESS subwoofer and can be converted to 5.1 with the addition of the WIRELESS rear speakers.... from what I can find it is the only one that has the option to add the wireless rear speakers.
Q: What are the dimensions of the packaging? I need to know if it will fit in my car.
A: Hi PickledRaisins, Here's the dimension of the packaging: (W X H X D) 70 1/8 x 42 1/2 x 7 3/4 in (1780 x 1077 x 196 mm Erin
