Honestly a very sub par speaker system. Bought this thinking it was going to blow my mind, but really disappointed for the price of a premium speaker. There are many others out there like Sonos or Samsung that seem to do better. The speaker itself sounds 'fine', but lacks customizations and ability to tweak the sound. The app is supposed to do all this for youz but it really doesn't adjust much. More of a placebo effect. It lacks any ability except for 3 sound options, and low med high base. Theres very little 3D sound effects with just the bar itself, base is reasonable but again, only have low med high options to adjust. Gets loud.. but for 1400 I can get many others for loud. There also seems to be a very long latency, with the bar out of sync with the TV words a lot of the time, requiring adjustments. Limited ports, only two HDMI (one for ARC to the TV and the other for an additional input), but oddly even this input HDMI has a long delay. Looks wise - very nice and sleek MAJOR downside, there's no RF repeater. I paired this with my Sony TV (all Sony's have the remote receiver on the bottom) and it completely blocks my TV remote from working, with no solution other than buy a separate top box set for your tv. Sounds like a stupid design flaw from Sony products to build TVs with a RF receiver On the bottom, and build a ln incompatible sound bar that blocks the bottom of a TV. Id expect more for 1400. Since I have a slightly older Sony TV, there's really zero brand loyalty or compatibility benefits. No built in Chromecast compatibility, only Bluetooth connectivity. Requires you to download the phone app, the control is more or less useless and you can't tell what setting you've enabled or disabled (see pic). Only indicator on soundbar is some LED lights that blink. Overall I would highly not recommend. Buy another better product for cheaper.

Hearing this in the store I was blown away, but when I got home, I couldnt believe how unimpressive it was. I thought about buying the $300-400 Sony SA-SW3 200W subwoofer, but the guy who sold it to me said we listened to it without the subwoofer. He either lied or didn't realize, but that seems hard to believe given the drastic difference from listening to it in the store vs an hour later when I set it up at home. It apparently has two small woofers among its 11 speakers, but if I max out the bass through the Bravia app (which you have to use and is buggy as all get out), the woofer crackle at volume 35-40. Give me a break, Sony. In addition to all of that, the volune is completely inconsistent across different apps (all apps downloaded to the TV i.e not through my Firestick, which we dont even use anymore because the soundbar sounds even worse theough the Firestick). For example, YouTube is super loud and Netflix, Disney+, etc. often sound muted. The 360 Spatial Surround Sound we heard in the store is hardly noticeable, even after going through the setup numerous times. So, not only am I extremely disappointed in this expensive purchase, it's also been a huge waste of time. Now I have to package this thing up to return it. Hopefully I can find something half the price that sounds better, comes with a subwoofer and maybe even wireless rear speakers (looking at you, LG)! I do like the design. Its sleak and doesn't obstruct sight of the TV, so I guess there's that. In short, don't waste your money unless it goes under $300.

Presentation – The Sony Theater Bar 9 arrives in a diminutive, plain brown box. Included is a HDMI cable, a token and virtually limited remote, wall mount brackets, table-top feet to allow for a touch of height in front of a television’s stand/legs and the power cord. Once unboxed, the Bar 9 is a big departure from the previous generations of Sony sound bars. No longer are there robust cases & grilles but instead, we are presented with a sleeker design – mostly covered in cloth – with no capacitive touch buttons, no display and a noticeably “lighter on its feet” monolith. The build quality of the Bar 9 and the stripped-down remote control is the beginning of where the disappointments start. One word sums up the included remote: meager Aesthetics are highly subjective but are indicative of cost cutting – so keep that in mind. Personally, I prefer the build quality & functional features of the HT-S (previous generation) of Sony sound bars. I will cover the smattering of disappointments later in the review but suffice it say, a bar covered in cloth is much harder to keep clean vs. hard & smooth grilles & surrounding surfaces and will likely succumb to looking more tattered with age. There is only 1 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out. Considering the high price for just the bar with no included rears or subwoofer, a second input should have been provided. Initial Setup – The setup process reveals even more of my dissatisfaction with this new line of Bravia Theater sound bars. New owners are required to set up a Sony Cloud account and initialize the sound bars use via a mobile app. Yuck. I do understand the draw to have more & more devices deemed IoT capable but having no choice is a deal killer in my book. It would have been one thing to provide additional comprehensive device setup & configuration via a handy mobile app, but Sony’s choice to completely obliterate onscreen configuration pages and functional feedback – like resorting to only LED indicator lights instead of a verbose display & on-screen displays – is a huge mistake. Obviously, some people will be excited to see App control and convenience but that way of controlling something as simple as a sound bar won’t appeal to everyone. Even if Sony had only opted to eliminate the front facing led display, the convenience of the on-screen display confirmations of content formatting and source selection is super handy. The Bravia Theater sound bars no longer provide this essential functionality. Curious what the volume level is per a number value, you have to use a mobile app… More yuck! We prefer to enjoy our home theater experience in a very relaxing & immersive way… not tethered once again to our phones. Preferences aside, setting up was relatively easy until the step that focuses in on calibrating the 360 sound-field Mapping. This is the area that really ticked me off as the mobile app-based process kept throwing errors that the measurements were too low and left me lacking any confidence that the onboard DSP was providing optimal sound staging. Even more annoying is the way the App reminded me that I needed to complete the calibration steps. No matter if I made the measurements with or without my Galaxy S device’s protective case, the measurements never completed. The previous HT-A series didn’t have these issues. I had the exact same issues even using my Sony Xperia phone. I’d like to mention that I have experience with all three primary sound bars of the HT-A series (3000, 5000, 7000) and our main home theater setup includes both the SA-RS5 up-firing rear wireless speakers and the SA-SW3 wireless subwoofer. This is important because it provides a “system ecosystem” whereby all I had to do was to replace the sound bar positioned below our OLED television. This arrangement should have provided a quick & painless setup upgrade experience that, quite simply, didn’t happen. During the App’s guided setup, the syncing of the rears & subwoofer failed at two attempts and required starting the entire setup process over again each time. Not a good customer experience, plain & simple. Some will ask about how the wireless connectivity maintains a stable and quality connection between the bar and rears/sub but I cannot honestly assess any longer-term performance, having owned the Bar 9 for such a short time. Only time will tell. But during the course of one week, the mobile App (LOL) never alerted us to a disconnection issue nor did we hear the rears drop out. That’s all I can really say. Performance – I also cannot attest to any improvement in sound staging with respect to width or distortion vs. the previous generation, HT-A series of Sony sound bars but what I do know is that with this new platform shift, Sony has finally fell prey to DSP sound mapping functionality problems. The competitors have issues with providing good performance across the board and is an easy thing to test, especially with Object Based Dolby Atmos and DT-X audio content. What I can easily demonstrate, in a hugely frustrating way, is that critical Dialogue sound objects easily become squashed or smothered by the sound track and/or active environmental Objects – like the sounds of cars, explosions, background music or movie score and crowd noise. Both the mobile App and the remote provide a “Voice” function that can compensate for and lift voice Objects but it is far from perfect, and ends up changing the overall fidelity of everything else in the sound field and is typically a function intended for those with hearing disabilities or for lowered listening level situations. A properly configured Object-oriented sound field should not rely on this type of functionality for typical, everyday listening in a properly sized system. Again, in comparison to the prior HT-A series (or competitor offerings...), the voicing of the Bravia Theater bars is messed up. My personal experience with there types of issues has been that these types of flaws are baked into the DSP hardware and cannot be remedied with firmware updates (many have tried…) and this is the primary reason I cannot recommend this new line of Sony sound bars. There are very dynamic scenes in shows like Game of Thrones, Vikings and then a bunch of movies that clearly demonstrate how poorly the Bravia Theater Bar 9 mishandles the dialogue Objects. Both the Voice function and Auto-leveling functions available are ways to try to mitigate the issue but both are not primarily designed to fix problems with DSP issues. So, in other words, don’t settle. Loudness or dynamic range compressing algorithms have useful & intended purposes but shouldn’t be used a crutch when the actual Object handling process(es) aren’t correct. Summary - For first time Sony sound bar customers, the Bravia Theater Bar 9 will provide a sleek looking, system that works – but does it work up to the high “bar” actually set by Sony on their previous offerings? Absolutely not. With Sony killing off the onscreen display functionality, removing the front-facing display & capacitive-touch ‘top’ controls and taking on a Visio like design character or theme with the cloth covering and status LED only functionality, the cost reduction focus is glaringly obvious. When you couple these huge changes in usability/functionality with the bar’s inability to always present dialogue, clearly and properly – this bar is a no go. Pros: Lightweight, diminutive design that will appeal to many It’s nice that Sony included table-top stand offs for those setting their bar in front of their TV Cons: App only ecosystem Clunky pairing experience with Sony’s own rear & sub wireless speakers Horrible sound field calibration functionality No more onscreen display functionality No more touch control on the top of the bar No more front facing display 1 HDMI In and 1 HDMI Out Cloth covered Combined with the aforementioned functionality omissions, the included token remote is nearly useless The Bravia Theater Bar 9 simply offers very little for how much it costs and I would recommend the prior ‘vintage’ of sound bars Sony offers. They rock!

It lasted 2 years. While new it was inconsistent sometimes audio going out for 1-2 seconds once or twice a week. Now the tv doesn't pick it up nor do bluetooth devices like they used to. I wonder if Sony silently killed it with an update. Only works exclusively paired with the bravia app. Can't be used with a tv which is the reason it was purchased. New HDMI cables didn't help.

Aesthetically speaking, this is one of the best looking soundbars out there with the minimalist styling. Placed on the right hutch or on a wall, it's barely noticeable. This is where the positive ends. I'm one of the few that prefers no screen on the soundbar. Connecting to my A80J, I thought a Sony product connected to another would be perfect and easy. It's anything but. After connecting this soundbar, my TV became slow to respond to any input from the TV remote. Adjusting the volume takes forever. After disconnecting the soundbar, the TV returned back to its normal status, volume up/down is quick along with cycling through menus. Something about this soundbar taxes the TV's resources. The Wi-Fi audio connectivity to Spotify and others needs work. This is by far the worst part of the soundbar. Music through the TV works better. For example, listening to Spotify at volume 50 through just the soundbar, turning off the soundbar, then later returning to power on the TV turns Spotify back on and playing the last track at volume 50. It's a jarring experience, especially after not being in the living room for a few hours. The proprietary EQ is good for the masses but sometimes slight adjustments are needed. It would be nice for Sony to provide an option to provide a minimum 5 band EQ in later versions. Please do better, Sony. This coming from a household that uses all Sony TVs and portable devices for many decades.

77" BRAVIA XR A95L + BRAVIA Theater Bar 9. BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 PROS: Clear sound, no distortion CONS: Requires BRAVIA Connect app & terms acceptance for initial setup and sound calibration. Weak bass. 77" BRAVIA XR A95L PROS: Perfect blacks, bright colors, wide view angle CONS: Visible stutter on live TV, too many Motion and Clarity settings
Posted
Hi D001,
We appreciate your feedback and are thrilled to hear you're enjoying the perfect blacks and clear sound of your new BRAVIA setup!
Regarding the BRAVIA Theater Bar 9, we understand that the initial app setup can feel like an extra step, but it is essential for the Sound Field Optimization to calibrate the 13 speakers to your specific room. If the bass feels weak, we recommend checking the Subwoofer volume or the Bass setting within the BRAVIA Connect app. Additionally, adding an optional wireless subwoofer (like the SA-SW5 or SA-SW3) can significantly enhance that deep cinematic impact.
For the A95L, to address the stutter on live TV, you may want to adjust the Motionflow settings. Try setting Smoothness to a lower level or turning on CineMotion to "Auto" to help the TV process broadcast frames more naturally. Since there are many clarity settings, starting with the "Cinema" or "Professional" picture modes often provides the most balanced "out-of-the-box" experience for live content.
Thanks for choosing Sony.
Best regards,
Eliab

I bought this for the entire Bravia package, which included OLED Tv, Soundbar, Subwoofer, Wireless speakers. This sound bar is the most disappointing part of the lineup. Setup was easy for me, but considering 90% of setup had to be completed in the app (which is not clear on any manual) I don't see this as a convenient option for most users. Sound optimization is terrible, extremely minimal tweeks available. It's great on how plug and play it is with the Bravia TVs, but for how little options are included for the price, theres a lot to be desired. Hooked up to the wireless surround speakers, I have to use my phone's microphone for optimization (which I have to problem with) but it created an extremely dissatisfing sound, no matter what configuration I had this in. For comparison, my HT-A7000 (Which I paid nearly half the price for) has the "same amount of speakers" but is a much better sound system. Surround speakers sounded much better, has better configuration options, and has its settings interface accessable from the unit rather than exclusively through a smartphone.

Thank you so much for sharing your detailed feedback about the Bravia package and the HT-A9000, KadenE. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience with the soundbar hasn’t met your expectations, especially in comparison to the HT-A7000. We take input like yours seriously as it helps us understand real-world use and improve both our products and support.
Addressing Your Main Concerns
App-Based Setup and Configuration
You mentioned that most of the HT-A9000’s setup and settings are only accessible via the BRAVIA Connect app, and that this wasn’t clearly stated in the manual. Your observation is valid—the HT-A9000 relies on the BRAVIA Connect app for the majority of setup steps, device management, and sound customization options. This design enables advanced features like network integration, seamless firmware updates, and system control from a smart device, but it can be less intuitive for users who would prefer traditional remote or panel-based configuration. We understand that this shift might not feel convenient for everyone, and your feedback will definitely be shared with the development team.
Sound Optimization and Tweak Options
It’s disappointing to hear that the sound optimization process, especially when using your phone’s microphone, hasn’t delivered satisfying results. The HT-A9000 aims to provide immersive surround through features like 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, which calibrates sound based on room characteristics using the app and your device’s microphone. While this technology is designed for flexibility, we recognize that it may not always match the level of manual sound tweaking or interface accessibility some users expect. Your direct comparison to the HT-A7000—praising its sound, physical configuration options, and unit-based settings—highlights real differences in how each model approaches user control and optimization.
Value and Feature Differences (HT-A9000 vs. HT-A7000)
The HT-A9000 is indeed Sony’s newest flagship, boasting more speakers and next-gen spatial audio features. However, your point about the value proposition and user interface, especially when compared with the HT-A7000, is valid. The HT-A7000 provides a more traditional remote interface and settings that are accessible directly on the unit, which some users may find preferable.
Integration and Plug-and-Play
We’re glad to hear that you found the integration with Bravia TVs straightforward and the setup process relatively easy—even if much of it is app-based. The plug-and-play harmony within the Bravia ecosystem remains a focus for us, and your positive note on this is appreciated.
Support Options and Next Steps
If you are open to it, our support team would be happy to troubleshoot your specific setup to see if any adjustments or updates can help improve the sound quality and user experience. Sometimes running the sound field optimization again, ensuring all devices have the latest firmware, or tweaking room placement can lead to significant improvements.
Your feedback comparing models like the HT-A9000 and HT-A7000 is invaluable as we strive to balance innovation with usability. Your concerns will be shared with our product teams for future updates and documentation improvements. If you decide to give the app-based features another try, or if you have further feedback, please let us know—we’re here to help.
Thank you again for your honest review and for being part of the Sony community.
Best regards,
Gus

[Employee of bestbuy] Being honest I expected way more when I purchased this soundbar considering the high price point. The soundbar was bad it kept disconnecting from the tv every five minutes. I have to turn it off and and on again in order for it to work. Also the sound quality was not great either considering the price there are many options with way better sound at this price.

When we listen to the sound system in the store, it sounded great. However, when we brought it home and set it up for the instructions, we had to turn off the rear speakers in order to hear the voice. Think something must’ve been the matter with the sound bar, I told them when I returned it. They had a Samsung system on sale last year‘s model and we bought that and it works fantastic true theater sound in our own living room

Hi Papa,
We apologize that you are experiencing lip-sync issues with your BRAVIA Theater Bar 8. This problem is usually resolved with a simple reset or update. Please first perform a Power Restart by unplugging the soundbar and TV for a minute, then plug them back in. If the delay continues, ensure the soundbar has the latest software update and, as a final step, try a Factory Reset by holding the Power button on the soundbar for more than 10 seconds. Hi Ruh8n2, thanks for choosing and purchasing our products. We're sorry to hear that have an issue with your new Sony units. The HTA8000 is designed to provide a comprehensive spatial sound experience, but it seems that the mid-range and subwoofer output are not delivering the desired impact in your setup. Please isolate the issue by following these steps:
• Please make sure the 360 Spatial Sound Mapping is Enabled: On the remote control screen in the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app, navigate to Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Field Setting, and make sure that 360 Spatial Sound Mapping is set to On.
• Verify that the Sound Field is set to On and that the Sound Field Settings are configured correctly for 360 Spatial Sound Mapping.
• Proper placement of the subwoofer and rear speakers can make a big difference. Try different locations and run the auto-calibration feature if available.
• Test Tone: In the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app, you can select Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Output Check, and then select Test Tone to check if the sound is being output correctly.

Hi John,
We're very sorry to hear you're having trouble with your BRAVIA Theater Bar 8. That's certainly not the seamless experience we want you to have, especially when pairing it with a BRAVIA TV. A rebooting issue and connectivity problems can be frustrating.
We recommend trying a full power reset on both your soundbar and your TV. Unplug both devices from the power outlet, wait for at least two minutes, and then plug them back in, turning on the TV first, followed by the soundbar. You should also ensure that your TV's "Control for HDMI" or "BRAVIA Sync" settings are enabled, as this helps with the connection between the two devices. Lastly, double-check that you're using a high-speed HDMI cable connected to the eARC/ARC port on both your soundbar and TV.
If these steps don't resolve the issue, please contact us through this link: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US so we can provide more in-depth troubleshooting.
Thanks for choosing Sony.
Best regards,
Eliab
