Supposed to be excellent condition, but all in scratches and dents!

I have owned this for just under a year. For the price, quality is exceptional. I love the sound when it works together. Sound bar is connected via Optical. Every 2-5 minutes(no exaggeration) the subwoofer cuts out intermittently, green light blinks as an indication of attempted reconnection. I have followed Sony’s instructions to reset and ‘fix the issue’, however, does not fix the issue. Very irritating. Considering switching brands as I’ve had better experiences with less commonly known brands..

I bought this because of the great reviews but honestly it’s been a bit of a let down. When watching movies the sound effects, music and bass are pretty good…. The down side is the vocals get drowned out with no way to make a good adjustment. I’ve maxed out the volume on this bar to better hear what is being said, but as soon as some kind of action comes on, now it’s way too loud. I wish there was some kind of built in EQ. It has very limited adjustability. I tried every which way to adjust the settings. Sadly this wasn’t all that cheap, especially since I had to end up buying a new soundbar to replace this one. My personal advice would be to save a little more money and buy something that has more adjustability so you can have clearer sounding movies. Or buy this bar and test it extremely well before the return due date expires. It may be just right for you. Good luck.

So I got this sound bar and used it for about 2 weeks. Movies, shows, and music. I tried both inputs and bluetooth. Really not impressed with anything but the subwoofer. I even got this on sale for like $160. I would be really upset if I paid $300 for it… The bar only has two speakers and no separate tweeters. Really poor highs that struggle with dialogue and noticeably poor on music. Sounds very much like the speaker is mounted to an aluminum can. No midrange at all. I took it back for the Sonos Beam 2 and couldn’t be more happy. In this price range I would recommend something else or spend the extra bucks for a better quality bar. I’ve heard a friend’s Vizio that sounded much better than this Sony.

Great sound quality. BIG BIG negative is the Bluetooth pairing. It will automatically switch from TV to “Pairing” right in the middle of watching something so you have to switch it back, then possibly rewind what you were watching so you didn’t miss anything. I should have read the reviews closer, would have never purchased it had I known of this issue.

Bought this to replace an older unit (no need for brands) and was highly dissapoonted. The sub on my old unit went out; after compairing a few this one stood out because of the ‘powerful wireless subwoorer’ it claims to have. Hook everything up only to find out everythung sounds worse then my old unit AND I have no sound adjustments other then a voice button that doesn’t change much and a sub on and off button. No trebble or bass adjustments and you get what you get as far as sound quality. The sub was not powerful at all and I could barely feel/hear it working from where I have it placed near the couch, about 6 feet from where I sit. The old one shook the room pretty good until it didn’t, this one, might scare a gnat away. Again, the system is great for a dental or doctors office but I wouldn’t buy it if you want some really good sound during movies and such. Please don’t make the same mistake i did unless you really do want as little as you can get for $200-300 in the sound bar world.

The sound is good but it does not stay synchronized with the TV so about half the time you must keep both remotes on hand which makes it a huge hassle. Unless you have to have one, skip it. I bought a Sony Brevia to go with this sound bar and both the store and the guys who installed misled me to think the two things would be synchronized and controlled by a single remote. It just is not true.

This soundbar has a decent sound for the price. I sounded great in the store but average in my home. I don't know if I have a flawed product but the sound will cut out on occasion. If I didn't need to spend my rewards points before they expired I would have waited until I could afford a better one.

I was looking to add a little better sound to a TV in a bedroom. The factory speakers were not bad, but aimed towards the back, so a little muffled. Having experience with other basic surround sound systems in the past, the specs on this one seemed perfect, and the wireless sub was a bonus. Setup was standard, but it was obvious they were looking for impact, as the bar and subwoofer are well oversized for their power. The sound is the disappointing part. It is basically two tweeters in the bar, and one subwoofer. Sound adjustment is poor as well, as volume controls the bar, and a separate +/- 10 option is available to proportionally control the sub. Sound from the bar produces too much treble, and the power seems not much better than the standard TV speakers. The sub is overly powerful, and booms excessively even when setting it in the negative range. Even trying various combinations of the "surround field" and "voice" features, I have yet to find a combination that blends together for a decent midrange. I have not yet, but seriously considering just going back to the standard TV speakers.

The sound coming out of this thing is pretty underwhelming. Please previously had an LG soundbar Which sounded pretty good, but switched to this one because we got a Sony TV and wanted to control the TV and sound with the same remote. The sound quality from this soundbar was significantly worse for a similar priced item.

The sound bar did not have enough adjustments. As it turns out the Sony Bravia TV I bought has high quality speakers and I did not need the sound bar. The sound was more crisp and clear without this bar.

Hi OrlandoC,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing intermittent issues with the subwoofer performance on your Sony HT-S400 system. To ensure your audio experience is consistent, we recommend trying the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Unplug the soundbar and the subwoofer from the power outlet for approximately 2 minutes. Plug them back in and test the audio again. This often clears temporary communication glitches between the units.
2. Check the subwoofer’s power indicator:
If it lights red, move the subwoofer closer to the bar speaker until the indicator changes to green or amber.
3. If the problem persists, reset the speaker system as follows:
Press and hold the power button and the volume down (–) button on the bar speaker for more than 5 seconds until [RESET] appears on the front panel display. This will restore the system to its initial settings. Disconnect the AC power cord, then reconnect it and turn the system back on by pressing the power button.
If these steps do not resolve the intermittent bass, our dedicated technical support team is ready to assist you further. You can reach them directly via this link:

Really wanted this to be a good system. Action scenes were loud with very good bass. Unfortunately dialogue was very hard to get loud enough. Ended up returning the system.

It’s better than just the TV sound with no bar. It’s too bad that we have to pay extra to have decent sound in addition to the cost of a TV.

Hi AlirezaR,
We are sorry to hear that the sound quality of your HT-S400 soundbar has degraded significantly after 11 months of use. This is certainly not the expected performance, and we need to help you resolve this. As a first step, please try power cycling both the main soundbar unit and the wireless subwoofer by unplugging them from the wall for five minutes and then plugging them back in; this can sometimes reset the audio processing. If the poor quality persists, please contact our support team immediately, as your unit is still under the standard one-year warranty and we will need to arrange a service or repair: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US
Thanks for choosing Sony.
