I’ve had this system for a little less than a month and I am overall happy. The sound is great clear and has different modes so we can listen to it at anytime. Install was easy and set up was easier. The only gripe I had is sometimes it doesn’t automatically grab the source I need it to. Takes some playing with but it’s rare. For the price it’s worth it.

Couldnt be happier with my Purchase! Sound quality is great, and being able to control the bass and enable night mode allows you to still enjoy it even in the late hours of the night. One thing to note is that the subwoofer sometimes produces this thump that tends to be louder than the volume its been set to. Its been pretty spontaneous but it isnt much of an issue if you pay it no mind. Another small thing about volume control is that its not nearly as fast or responsive as i would expect a soundbar to be. But again, if that wont bother you then this is a great purchase for either a bedroom or living room!

The sound you get from the Sony HT-S400 system is quite impressive. I think for the money you pay you get a decent sound. I have this system setup in my bedroom and have changed the sound dramatically. I love it when I stream all my contents and when I play my Xbox S series. I’m glad I did purchase this unit.

If you want a wireless subwoofer with richer bass sound and Bluetooth, this is the one, but if you need a voice assistant built-in, this is not for you.

Easy hookup and install. Instructions were very quick to follow in the startup guide. Turned on the subwoofer and it synced automatically. Love that a mounting template came included with this sound bar. It would make for a sleek mounted sound bar setup for those that may not have a media console or just want the proper aesthetic. Sound is plenty good. Bass is decent at max level just not punchy like I like it. For price point it does sound good. Wish it had more control over audio levels like the treble. I can see that for TV/Movies you will be alright knowing this can get plenty loud. For music it may leave your ears searching for a little more finesse. At the end of the day this is useful for those who aren't audiophiles but still want a loud sound bar that can hold it's own in a standard living room.

Overview: I think we can all agree almost all built in TV speakers leave much to be desired. I was looking for something for my basement TV, a TV that mainly gets used by the kids for TV shows, Xbox gaming and an occasional movie. The Sony HTS400 seems like the perfect choice, it’s reasonable priced (disclaimer: as part of the Tech Insider Network, this item was provided to me at no cost in exchanged for an unbiased review), simple setup with no wires to run. The sound bar and subwoofer came packaged in an “L” shaped cardboard box. Inside, it was well packed and included 2 power plugs and an optical cable (no HDMI is included). The subwoofer is mode from particle board with black laminate outer layer, it’s about the size of a desktop PC. The sound bar itself feels sturdy, top cover is plastic with some texture on it. When it comes to design, I would say overall, its attractive, but nothing special. Setup: Getting the sound bar and subwoofer setup with my TV, a Hisense U6G, was a breeze. I tested all 3 connections, optical cable, Bluetooth and finally the HDMI via ARC port. 1. HDMI ARC: Overall, I prefer the HDMI ARC connection; the sound bar automatically goes into standby mode when the TV is turned off and the sound bar volume is controlled with the TV remote. 2. Bluetooth: The Bluetooth connection worked well, I didn’t notice any lag in video/audio (some TV’s have a feature to adjust lag). This method on connecting is clean, leaving no wires to hide. I noticed when I powered down the TV, the sound bar stayed on and was in pairing mode. This is probably because I have 1 device, the TV, paired to the sound bar, and when the TV is off, it no longer detected the device and automatically went into “pairing” mode. 3. The optical cable works fine as well, but the sound bar won’t go into standby mode when the TV is turned off and you’ll need the sound bar remote to adjust the volume. The sound bar can be wall mounted, there are mounting holes on the back. They also include a template but does not include screws or mounting hardware. Sound: My TV room is approximately 500 sq feet, the sound bar and subwoofer is loud enough to fill the room. To test, I played some of my favorite movies that have good sound. This includes The Matrix, TOP gun and Transformers. The subwoofer produced good base, the sound bar while it was loud, I didn’t really hear any “surround sound” and this was with the Sound field turned on. I didn’t hear jets flying from one side of the living room to another. I realize it’s a 2.1 sound bar and perhaps I should not really expect that. In the lobby scene of the Matrix, again, the subwoofer supplied plenty of base with the gun shots, but the rest of the sound coming from the sound bar could’ve been more clear and crisp, the bullet casing dropping on the floor wasn’t as clear as I hoped, it didn’t have that pitch that I’d expect to hear. Overall, if you’re looking for bang for the buck, this is a very good sound bar and subwoofer package. You get good, loud sound and deep base, great for Xbox games and movies. If you’re looking for surround sound, crisp, clear audio, look elsewhere and increase your budget. Pros: 1. Loud 2. Subwoofer has good base 3. Reasonably priced Cons: 1. Audio could be more clear 2. Lacked surround sound-like effects 3. No voice assistant supported (Alexa, Google Home, Siri)

This sound bar and sub woofer work fine. The bar is a bit longer than I anticipated. It fits in front of the stand mounted tv but not under it as I had hoped. The sub woofer adds bass but is clunky and large. Still, I found a place for it. I still much prefer my previous sound system which involved a stereo receiver, 2 Bose bookshelf speakers, and phenomenal sound but new tvs have no ports for RCA plugs so this is an ok option. The Bose in the picture is no longer connected to the TV.

Thank you for the honest review, Johnna!
We’re glad the HT-S400 is working well for you, though we appreciate the feedback on the size of the bar and subwoofer. While we know it’s hard to beat a classic bookshelf speaker setup, we’re happy this system provided a modern solution for your new TV.
Thank you for making Sony a part of your home!

This has great sound, I do not like how limited the sound is. The difference between 3 & 4 is a lot and I wish there was a 3.5. Frequently the 3 is just a tad too quiet and the 4 is super loud!

Hello Wendyf,
Thank you for choosing Sony!
We’re honored to hear that you value the sound quality of the HTS400 soundbar. Your observation regarding the volume increments between levels 3 and 4 is appreciated and noted. For the price, this thing puts out REALLY good sound! Just pop in Top Gun, turn the bar and woofer up, and it is incredible. My reason for rating it 4/5 stars is that the dialogue is really bad, and any sound compression options and/or night mode don’t help. I know it is 2 channels and doesn’t have the dedicated third channel for dialogue, but still. Watch Tron Legacy, and it sounds so good, but when you get to a scene like when he meets his dad and they start talking, you have to turn it up 20 points or more to match the volume you had for the music and sound effects. I am taking this back and getting the Sony 3-channel Bravia 6 sound bar.

Hi WillH,
It is truly wonderful to know that the HTS400 delivered such an incredible, room-filling experience for your favorite action sequences!
We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the dialogue clarity during quieter scenes. While the 2.1 channel system is designed for powerful cinematic impact, we understand that constant volume adjustments can take you out of the moment. It sounds like you have a great eye (and ear) for detail, and moving to a 3-channel system like the BRAVIA Theater Bar 6 is a fantastic choice. The dedicated center channel will ensure those pivotal conversations stay crisp and clear, even amidst a heavy Daft Punk score.
Thank you for trusting Sony!
Regards,
Dominick

Positive: "Great sound quality, powerful bass with the wireless subwoofer. Easy setup and sleek design!" Negative: "Sound quality is decent, but bass can be too overpowering. Lacks some clarity at higher volumes."

Sound is great! However, it seems it’s only wall mountable or stand alone, rather than mountable to a TV or specifically a pull down TV mount. We had to rig up something to our TV mount bracket in order to attach it under TV. I didn’t want it taking up mantle space, so this was the fix. Had to be mindful that all the function buttons are on top of the soundbar, so had to leave a pretty decent width of space to get to them in the event we lost remote or something. But, it worked. We are enjoying that it isn’t taking mantle space and it pulls down with our TV down over our mantle. And enjoying the great sound.

which trade off's does one feel they can live with? I have tried 3 set up's recently and all 3 have their pluses and minuses. most lower cost sound bar systems seem to use lower quality speakers in the bar and, with simple sealed enclosures and use the sub to make up the difference. This system did great with quick bass (something the Bose bass module 500 does not do) drums, mid bass, maybe not rumble the floor sub bass but I would rather give up sub bass for harder hitting bass that this has. I had a hard time dealing with the holes in the frequency response and generally lower quality vocals and highs vs my Bose TV speaker. this system really hated the Halo video game (the title screen has some monks singing and you can barely hear them for some reason) but, with other music this system did great! watched the movie Drumline and it really did well with the drums. anything you would have at a party this does well to and it gets quite loud. you just have to try to make a educated choice and see what characteristics work best for you. this system might work very well for many.

Very simple to set up. Not a lot of tweaking needed. Plug it in, connect to ARC/eARC port and ensure your TV recognizes it. Sound is really good for small spaces (office, den, bedroom, etc.). Very dependable and easy to use. For the price it's a great value. I bought two of these for two TVs in 12x12 rooms and they provide all the sound, clarity, and punch from the subwoofer you should need for that space.

Good Quality sound but for the price point it lacks specific modes for example "Cinematic or Sports". Everything is channeled through one general mode.

Hi J5000,
We’re sorry to hear that the available sound settings haven't met your expectations. While the HT-S400 utilizes a more streamlined interface, we recommend trying the Sound Field button on your remote; this activates Sony’s S-Force PRO Front Surround to create a more "Cinematic" experience by emulating surround sound. You can also toggle Voice Mode or Night Mode to further refine the audio based on what you are watching.
Thanks for choosing Sony.
