The only difference between the UBP-X1000ES and the cheaper UBP-X800 4K players is the ES model has analog outputs, a front panel display and better quality feet on the bottom of the unit. Otherwise it is identical to the UBP-X800 in every way. If there are any differences between the two internally, Sony doesn't tell us and I haven't noticed a difference in either sound or picture quality, both of which are excellent on these units. Whether that is worth the difference in price is up to you. I don't think it is and I would expect something better from Sony's ES line as far as build quality goes. I was also turned off by the cheap, generic looking box the ES unit came packed in which doesn't even look as nice as the standard units box. I would go with the UBP-X800 unless you really needed the analog outputs or wait until the UBP-X1000ES goes down in price.

I was on the market for a higher end 4k player that was built to not only play 4K Ultra disks but to also play MFSL audio CD, SACD formats. I was sad to find that OPPO is out of business for their famous audiophile Bluray players. Most new players dont offer analog audio outputs which I needed. I am using this on a 2 channel system which consists of: Carver TFM-35x THX Certified amp rated @ 250 WPC, Carver C-4000 preamp (amp/preamp rebuilt by Hi-Tech Audio) , and a pair of BIC America Formula FH-65B speakers with upgraded Jantzen Audio Superior Z-Caps in the crossovers. I also am using AudioQuest - Evergreen cables for analog RCA connection. I also have 55 inch TCL 4K HDR ROKU TV. I wanted to use the player for a while before writing a review. First the player has performed flawless as intended. Playing movies in 4K, Bluray, DVD I noticed a night and day difference between 4K and Bluray picture quality. Its like comparing Bluray to DVD. The audio capability is quite stunning as well. This player unleashed imaging and sonics that I did not expect. Playing Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab disks and SACDs just sound so good, like your in the studio or in front of the stage. The comparison of these disks and standard CDs are in comparison the same difference between 4K and standard DVD but for your ears. The only Con is I cant change the display format on the player to Track number and Track time. It only displays total time unless you skip tracks then it shows for like 2 seconds. I read all of the instructions and went to Sonys website. It will show on screen on your TV if you want. Too many Pros to overlook this little Con.

This UHD Blu Ray player is AWESOME!!!! It's super quiet and thing I like about it most is it's display and it's overall weight of the product!!! I feel if you want a quality built product,it has to have some weight to it and not be wimpy light built. The display shows elapsed time while watching DVDs or playing CDs, In short, this is a great Sony product that is capable of doing more as far as apps than I'll ever need, but I feel it's a quality well built product that for playing CDs and DVDs Blu Rays and even 4K, I'm not disappointed so far! Also gotta add, setup is a breeze, it's almost all auto, which is great!

Played Starwars last jedi in 4k. Extremely happy with the quality of the playback. Intense colors, smooth details, deep blacks......, impressive. Had been playing 4k disks in my XBOX 1, but this blew it away in quality and sound. BUT Half way through the movie, it froze. Went black. Tried 3 times to exit movie and play back from that point. It would load, but would freeze. Finally had to remove disk. After inspecting the disk, three finger prints were on same. So cleaned the disk and did not have that occur again. Even started it before the failure. Will be putting it through the paces this week. Chose the quick set up, easy. No hassles at all with the installation either.

I couldn't be happier with this player. Although I'll almost never use it for watching 4K Bluray or other video content, it has an exceptional picture quality. The real reason i've purchased it, is that it's a bargain basement priced SACD player, and sounds almost as good as an audiophile grade SACD player from a competitor that costs several thousand dollars more than this player does. If you're in the market for just an SACD player, and somewhat of an audiophile like i am, then you owe it to yourself to try this unit out for it's SACD capabilities. You'll save yourself a bundle by doing so.

Sony has a winner with this 1000ES. it works flawlessly no matter what disc or streaming service used. the picture quality is great even up scaling a dvd to 4K looks great.it has a really nice build quality to it. i do wish it had a backlit remote like my Panasonic DMP-UB900. so far after a few weeks i am satisfied this is one of the best 4K players out there.

I purchased this Sony UBP-X1000ES primarily for the sound / varied disc selection. I wanted a player that would play SACDs, as well as other discs, not just CDs and streaming. At this point in time, I don't own a 4K TV, so am unable to speak to that aspect. Having said that, Blu Ray and DVDs up scaled to 1080P look great. Due to some limitations of my setup, the video is routed through my receiver rather than directly connected to the TV. If you able to use the video HDMI directly to the TV, and send the audio to your receiver, that is the best setup. I choose the X1000 over the X800 because of the better build quality of the ES unit and because it has stereo analog output as well as separate video and audio HDMI outputs. The sound is great. I have played SACDs, CDs, HDCDs, and video discs with DTS as well as Dolby. The player handles all of the formats very well. I'm very pleased with the sound quality. If you don't care about surround sound and want pure stereo sound, I would suggest using the direct analog outputs directly to your amplifier. IMHO, no point in decoding files 2x.

This Sony 3D 4K Blu-ray player is absolutely magnificent. It upgrades regular DVDs like you wouldn't believe and of course Blu-ray looks even better but the crowning glory is the 4K. Between that and my Samsung 4K tv, movies are colorful, extremely vivid, and the sound with my surround sound system is fantastic and I am extremely pleased with this player. I just wish Samsung would go back to making 3D TV's so that I could get the full enjoyment from this Sony player. Set up was extremely easy and just took a couple of minutes. So far I have no complaints about this player at all. I've only had it a short time and if anything changes I'll update this review. But for right now I am extremely happy with it.

Having the Sony 4K OLED requires something fun to drive it, and this player certainly is that. 4K BluRay films POP, but older BluRay discs upscale amazingly well too. Very solid and fast player.

Did a bit of feature comparison prior to purchase of this player. Dolby Vision was something not sure of yet. Apparently, I was told at Best Buy store that Sony rep confirmed a software update would be made available that would render the player DV compliant (for both X800 and X1000ES). However, not sure when that's going to be made available by Sony though. Plays almost every type of disk tried so far. Apps like Amazon support UHD. Had also been playing media files from USB drive with 4K upscale resolution. Works very well even with 2015 Samsung UHD HDR TV.

This new Sony ES player is built like a tank and really delivers on picture and sound. The 4K picture is second to none, and standard blurays look the best I have ever seen. This new Sony is also a home run for sound quality. Cd's and sacd's sound superb, as does Spotify premium streamed through the player. This is my 3rd 4k player, and I'm finally satisfied that I'm getting all the best from my collection. If your looking for a high end 4K bluray player, I would highly recommend this one before making your final choice.

Absolutely gorgeous 4K images with this top of the line Sony player. With the demise of Oppo, this may currently be the best available. No balanced audio out or grounded three prong power cord, but sound on concert footage is still great. Upgrades two channel PCM and plays multiple formats including SACD and HiRez via USB. Setup menu is somewhat improved from previous models. WiFI setup is simple. Automatic updates.

Previous to the Sony, I had a Samsung 4K UHD player. The Sony has deeper color, clearer and more stable imaging and better sound. The setup is a snap, with useful descriptions to functions. Since OPPO is no more, this is the next best.

This is an incredible player...VERy comparable to My Oppo UDP-203. THe Audio actually sounds better. I however DID return this as the fact that it does not support Dolby Vision was a HUGE disappointment. If you are not looking for Dolby Vision or have a TV that doesn't support it, I highly DO recommend this player. Again the Audio performance is outstanding a this price even if you wanted to use it simply to play music, High Res files, etc. It is 85% of the sound quality of my Marantz SA-14S1 which is actually pretty insane.

I thought long and hard about buying the SONY UBP-X1000ES, but I didn't want to make all of our DVDs obsolete, so I went for the top of the line SONY. The set up was relatively easy and I eventually got to the software upgrade. My TV is an 4K LG OLED, and was able to access many of the You Tube 4K videos, but one feature that the SONY allowed me to access was the 4K mp4 video. If I tried to watch my "home movies" with the smart TV, no luck, but running them through the SONY- success. The one problem I had was after registering the product, I was supposed to get a couple of 4K DVDs, but for some reason, the serial number had already been submitted, (by me? or by someone else?), and even after explaining to a service rep in chat mode, they never gave me the DVDs or a credit.

This Sony player is quite good... Nice video and audio quality. I have some SACD's, and it plays those very well also. The issue I have is that Sony has a section that takes up most of the screen, that is for "Recommended Apps" that you can't get rid of. This is on the same screen where you select any app you'd like to launch. Invariably my family picks the app under the "Recommended Apps" section, as they consume most of the screen... and then I get called to figure out why it doesn't immediately work! I've called Sony... and all I get is sorry, you can't get rid of that section. I know Sony gets paid by the app developers to show those apps, but making it show me apps I already have, and then consume 2/3 of the screen real estate with them is horrible. I can't recommend this, until Sony fixes there corporate greed!
