I purchased both the JBL Flip 6 and ULT Field 1 to compare the sound. Here’s my verdict: Both speakers sound very similar. I wouldn’t say one is a clear winner over the other. I think the JBL outputs slightly more bass with EQ on max compared to the Field 1 with ULT mode on. But it’s very close. However, I enjoy the midrange on the Sony more. Guitars and vocals sound a bit more “forward” compared to the Flip 6. Highs are very similar, can’t hear much difference. Volume is also comparable. Both speakers do a fine job filling a small room. I will probably keep both.

Bought this as a speaker I can listen to while wrenching on my cars in my garage. The audio quality is impressive, but the bass is not as solid as other reviewers have made it out to be. Still though, I would definitely buy this again as it sounds good and looks good.

Hi P7000ss,
We appreciate the feedback on the ULT FIELD 3 and are glad you find the audio quality impressive and that it works great in your garage!
For an even stronger low-end, please ensure you press the dedicated ULT button on the speaker to activate the bass boost feature. You can also fine-tune the bass by creating a Custom EQ in the Sony | Sound Connect app.
Thanks for choosing Sony. Best regards, Eliab.

The Sony ULT Field 1 is meant to replace my Taotronics TT-SK06 that has lasted me seven years (and still going strong). Naturally, a product released seven years later will be better, right? For the most part it is though I do have to take price in consideration and do think the ULT Field 1 could be better in some aspects. Both of these speakers are comparable especially when they're both rated at 10 watts. First of all, design wise the Ult Field is incredibly portable with how light and small it is. It has a rope handle so you can hang it off of various objects. Buttons are responsive with no issues and most of them are backlit. The ULT is the most prominent as it provides extra bass, without it on the sound lacks that extra "oomph." Rated IP67, this speaker is said to be dustproof and waterproof. I do get the sense that this speaker is durable from its build quality. Battery life is said to be 12 hours in ULT mode though you can go longer with ULT off (practically doubled). So how does it sound? In relations to the Taotronics I had previously, a bit better in terms of clarity. However in terms of bass, it's not a substantial upgrade, but still enough that I say it's better. A appreciated feature is that you can answer calls with the speaker for better audio quality compared to what you hear over the phone. You can fine tune the EQ of the speaker using the Sony Music Center app though you don't have much options other than bass, middle, and treble. Keep in mind you cannot modify the EQ for the ULT mode. Some disappointments for me: no stereo sound (the Taotronics I owned had stereo sound) and you cannot use this as a wired speaker (something the Taotronics speaker could do). When compared to other Bluetooth portable speakers at this price point, you would think it can offer higher watts for its output too. At a MSRP of $130, it's a good speaker overall though I do think you can find similarly comparable features and sound at a somewhat lesser price. That said, its build and durability do appear to be topnotch.

Good not Great. The ULT bass feature drowns out the highs at higher volumes. I’m using indoors though and it might better outside.

Like my favorite food, I can never have enough Bluetooth speakers. More than a dozen are strategically placed throughout the house, from a pint size one to a giant 1200-watt party speaker and every size in between. Here comes the Sony ULT Field 3 to the family, and I can’t help but love it for its nearly perfect size and impressive sound quality. At 10 inches wide, a little over 4 inches tall, 3 inches deep and weighing about 2 and half pounds, the Sony ULT Field 3 comes close to the ideal portable speaker. First, it feels well built with smooth rounded lines that exude Sony quality, and so is the texture of the enclosure. It looks rugged and modern and, thanks to its small size, it can be placed almost anywhere. Connecting it was an easy process through Sony’s Sound Connect app. It’s a simple and easy to use app, with the ability to connect multiple speakers at a time. Several modes and features are available through the app to customize the speaker. I tried several of them but one of the most useful ones, the Bluetooth Standby mode did not work for me. This gives you the ability to turn on the speaker directly from the app after turning it off. It turns off from the app but won’t turn on. I own another bigger ULT Field speaker and that feature works flawlessly. I’m positive a future update can correct this issue. Now for the sound. Sony ULT Field speakers are known for their powerful bass, and this small guy doesn’t disappoint. For its size, the bass delivery is impressive. From Hip Hop, Country, Jazz, Latin and Afro Beats music the bass never lets you down. The mids and highs are good enough to keep up with those dynamic lows. It can also play loud enough to fill up a sizable room. The battery life is a welcome benefit of the ULT Field 3. Sony claims up to 24-hour battery life. I believe it’s possible, however you have to switch to Stamina mode that removes most of the lows and trims the highs a bit. The sound quality suffers. On the ULT sound mode and at a generous volume, I easily played continuously over 4 hours without a hitch with plenty of charge left. You can customize the sound with a manual equalizer but I quickly ran back to the ULT mode which made everything else sound a bit underwhelming. A feature that adds to the ULT Field 3’s portability is its dust and waterproof ratings. With an IP67 rating, it will resist dust and water effortlessly. You can take it practically anywhere and the addition of a stylish shoulder strap is a great enhancement. A day at the beach, this speaker played all day in the sun, sitting in the sand, and handled the occasional splashes of water with ease. I’m truly impressed with Sony’s ULT Field 3. I wasn’t expecting such a good performance. With the thoughtful addition of the shoulder strap, it’s small enough to carry around and powerful enough to deliver hours of entertainment with quality sound. It comes close to being the perfect portable Bluetooth speaker.

I have several Sony portable/party speakers and one thing they all have in common is stellar bass output. The ULT FIELD 3 continues that tradition in a highly portable size that will surprise you with the amount of quality sound you get out of a compact device. There are a lot of things to like about Sony speakers. They've been in the business a long time and offer high quality sound devices that, from my hands on experiences, blow the competition away. This size speaker is designed to fit a specific niche. Given the size of the FIELD 3, it will reside easily on a desk, shelf or countertop. To add more versatility, it can be placed in either a horizontal or vertical position. Given that the speakers are on either end, I suspected the vertical choice would really hurt the sound quality but, amazingly the sound is pretty much the same either way. That said, this speaker has BIG sound. Big enough to fill a good size room with sound. It can go incredibly loud. The ULT button cranks up the bass and presence of whatever is being played. It's possible Sony just included this as a button so that you can hear the difference between using the ULT and not, because I can't imagine anyone using the ULT once and not leaving it on all the time. The ULT does give the music a ton of punch and dynamic range. The controls on the FIELD 3 are nice and basic without any button that leaves you wondering “what the heck does that button mean?”. A power button (obvious), a Bluetooth button (also obvious), a Connect button for connecting this speaker to other ULT series speakers in party mode, a single transport button for play/pause/phone, and of course the volume + and – buttons. Oh and the ULT button, which you'll only press one time to turn it on. These buttons all have a great feel to them and are located on the top (where you'd expect them to be). Also on the top are the two strap attachment points. If you want to use the strap, you just need to pull each of these guys up, rotate them, and put them back in to expose the strap attachment points. The strap itself is heavy duty and adjustable. The hooks that slide in to the tie points are beefy and metal, without looking looking huge and drawing attention to themselves. It helps the hooks are painted the same color as the strap. Pairing was about as easy as it could possibly be. I turned on the FIELD 3, it connected automatically to my S24 Ultra. This is possibly due to the fact that I already have the Sony Sound Connect app because that's also used for all the other Sony speakers I have. As far as the overall appearance of this speaker, I like the size of it. It's very portable. I would say this is its' main strength. If I'm at home and outside, I go with one of my larger Sony Bluetooth speakers because they have better sound quality. But Sony has made a good portable here. The fabric on the main body is comfortable when carrying, and textured for a good grip. It also has an IP67 rating for water and dust which is perfect for pool areas, beach environments, camping situations and in general good for overall changing weather conditions. The color, I'm not thrilled with. Looking online, this speaker is shown in a very nice looking “Forest Gray” color, which looks like a cool sage green. Disappointingly, this is not how mine looks (even though the box mine came in says it is indeed Forest Gray). The color does seem to change in different lighting conditions, at times it seems like a richer gray color, but nothing I would call green. The online photos seem to greatly enhance the green color a lot more than I see in the real life edition. This particular unit does not come with any LED lighting which I'm totally fine with. On a portable speaker this size, it's completely not needed. If you're looking for the best sound quality in a wireless speaker, Sony has other, larger speakers that are better suited with this in mind. If you're looking for a highly portable Bluetooth speaker that offers way more bass than a speaker this size has any right to have, this is a really good choice. It took me between 15 and 20 minutes to charge from 60 to 100% using a 100W charger. Battery life seems respectable and none of my use cases drained the battery. Sony claims 24 hours of battery life which is probably reasonable, and it should easily last for a weekend camping trip no problem. You can also use the USB-C connection to charge a device like a phone. Even after visiting Sony's web page, I still can't explain what the “ULT” refers to in the name of this speaker series. Is it short for “ultimate”? Is it some acronym? I don't know! But it's in the name, and on a large button, so clearly it means something to Sony. For the sub $200 price, I feel that for that cost you're getting a really good speaker with great sound quality and top notch engineering that should allow this speaker to hold up for years of use.

With Sony’s new ULT Field 1, it’s as easy as one, two, three from set up to listening to your favorite music! You can enjoy music playback. It is nice to find some tech that is so simple to use. There is a QR Code to scan on the packaging for a link to install the Sony App. Once the App is installed and is opened, select your specific Sony Speaker. I used Bluetooth to pair with the Sony ULT Field 1 from my cell phone with Spotify. I wasted no time in listening to my favorite songs and playlists. Great sound from a small “personal” Bluetooth speaker! • The battery life is 13 hours (kind of short for being such a small device these days). The ULT Field 1 gets its charge from a USB Type C port hidden in the back of the speaker. Unfortunately, the charging cable is what I would call, extremely short. This is a “minor” issue in my opinion because you have to be close to an outlet or USB Type A port. So, this takes up a lot of space on a desk. Even though this is inconvenient, it’s not bad as it seems because a lot of Bluetooth speakers have the same “problem.” I don’t like it, but it is not a make-or-break moment in choosing the Sony speaker. • I would say the Sony ULT Field 1 is on the lighter side of things while in your hand. This contributes to a rating of “IP67” which is protocol for being “waterproof, shock proof and dust proof.” It is also very sturdy despite its lightweight feel. When you like taking it on the go, there is a hand/wrist band that makes the ULT Field 1 easy to carry. • The Sony ULT Field 1 has really amazing all around surround sound for its size. Sony, using a “sound diffusion processor” basically allows you to hear music from all around while reflecting the sound off objects in the immediate area. This makes the speaker sound “larger” than its actual size. The ULT Field 1, has two passive radiators at either end of the speaker that move with the compression of air inside the speaker. It adds substantial bass to the overall music being played. The overall quality of the sound for this speaker is excellent for its small size. With the ULT button on, the music and sounds definitely take a step up in the area of substantial bass. When the ULT button is off, I think it is great for podcasts or anything that requires vocals or speech. You will definitely notice these differences right away, on or off, with the ULT button. I believe this is intentional and accentuates the sound for low frequencies (music) separately from high frequencies (vocal or speech). • Another added “touch” was the soft touch buttons that control the Sony ULT Field 1. You can access volume up/down, play/pause (phone call too), Bluetooth and power (which also shows how much battery life you have left). Add Pandora, Spotify or YouTube Music (I did not see Tidal) for your music streaming, or music you have downloaded on your smart phone, tablet or laptop/desktop. • While working on this review and listening to the Sony ULT Field 1, I received a phone call. So I pushed down the button play/pause which also answers phone calls. The microphones definitely did their job as I sounded clear, and bright to the caller. The caller in the same way sounded good to my ears. Sony did a nice job on this particular feature on the ULT Field 1. Bring your music with you all summer long! The ultra-portable ULT Field 1 Bluetooth personal speaker is a great companion for trips too. The sound is great for its size and the ULT button provides all the bass you’ll need to enjoy music.

The Sony ULT wireless speaker has been a great personal speaker with a long battery life. I use a personal speaker nearly every day to listen to podcasts, audiobooks, and music. I’ve used it for 5 days anywhere between 20 min to 2 hrs per day and have only needed to charge it once. The Sony Music Center app says it’s currently at 80% battery. A very practical feature that I enjoy about this Sony speaker is that it’s portable and waterproof so I can place it on the edge of my shower and not really worry about it getting splashed with a little bit of water. I can also hang it on a towel hook with the included strap. I like that it can sit flat or on its side, it’s basically the size of a water cup so it fits neatly on my desk. I feel that the sound is good, but more for podcasts and audiobooks than music. Even when the ULT bass boosting button was not turned on, the bass was a bit too much for me on the default mode. I went into the sound settings on the Music Center App to tinker with the levels and was able to get the speaker to sound a little more to my liking. While listening to some music, I picked up a phone call and enjoyed a clear call. This wireless speaker has echo-canceling technology and a built-in microphone. This was very convenient because I didn’t have to disconnect the speaker and when I was done with the call, I seamlessly went back to listening to music. The volume button seems like it has more levels of adjustment than my phone, so I feel like I can change the volume little by little, which I think is a great feature. Listening to podcasts and audiobooks means that the “next” button skips forward 15 seconds and I love that I can access that feature by double pressing the play/pause button. I think this is a great speaker for people who prefer an artificially bass boosted listening experience. This will continue to be my daily speaker for the foreseeable future because it has a ton of features that I do like and the battery life has proven to be long-lasting.

Overall a very good speaker. The Sony ULT Field 1 is a clean looking pill speaker that comes in a few variations of colours. the outer edges are rubberized to help with durability in case its banged around. That combined with the IP67 rating means you can pretty much take this anywhere and not worry about drop damage, dust or water. It says its also salt water resistant but unfortunately I'm not near a salt water body. There's a really thick paracord like rope that can cinches in and out to help fasten it where you may need it or just to carry. its quite thick and appears to be durable with a thick knot holding it down Set up is very easy, scan the QR code, install the app and turn on the speaker. it's detected immediately and pairs with no issue. The app is quite lackluster. aside from seeing the phone connected to the device, there's really not much else. It has shortcuts to your local folders if you have stored music and your music app, but once you have music going, all it can really do is adjust the volume. you cannot control the media (pause, skip, previous etc), it does not even allow showing the audio information. you can select your playlists but you can also do that within the music app you're using so this app is really redundant and not necessary. The ULT Power button kicks in the ULT power. The Bass boost is really nice but doesn't overwhelm your sound to the point that it's annoying. You can tweak the equalizer within the app. The sound that plays when you enable/disable the ULT is annoying and interrupts the music, but if you do it through the app it doesn't do that. So i guess the app serves some purpose, though i would just leave the ULT on all the time and call it a day. while on phone calls, people on the other side said i sounded normal and they couldn't tell i was on the ULT Field 1 however their audio to me felt echoy and hollow. it'd work if you needed it, but you're probably better off keeping your phone on speaker. This has the potential to pair to a second speaker for stereo mode and based on the app it looks straightforward, but unfortunately i only had 1 speaker so i cannot test that feature Overall it's a decent pill shaped speaker similar size and shape to those in the same segment. The price isn't bad for what appears to be a very durable (so far) speaker that can play in stereo if you get another, just wish the app was more useful

This is a very solid speaker. It definitely has the "Sony sound". What I mean is after listening to lots of different audio products over the years, you start to hear their sound profiles. Sony has a very pop music centered sound. Punchy but not deep bass, sufficient mids, and good highs. Just really a "gets the job done" sound, but at a cheaper price than the big B's that do the same thing. Overall, it's a nice touch that the bass boost Ult button can disable the bass for listening to softer instrumentals and more detailed music. It never feels crisp, but always seems to feel "enough". It will sound good in a midsized room, but is boomy in a small room or bedroom. This absolutely hits the ball out of the park for a good beach or patio BBQ speaker. It can easily fill a decently sized patio space with music and if you party connect a few together, you can fill any size space you can think of. The IP67 rating will keep the components safe from water sprinkles, sand, dust, and smoke. It can get fairly loud before distorting. Overall, I'd say if you are into pop music, country, or rock, this will hit all your needs beautifully. When the rock anthems start to play, hit that Ult button and let the air guitar commence. If your music tastes frequently jump to the softer side of music... instrumental jazz, smooth jazz, classical, soft rock... this speaker might be too unfocused and boomy for you. It's somewhat adjustable via the phone app, but I couldn't get it to dial in tight enough for my liking for the softer music listening.

The Sony Ult Field 1 wireless speaker stands out for its exceptional audio quality and sleek design. However, there are a few aspects that could be enhanced to make it truly exceptional. First and foremost, the sound quality of the Ult Field 1 is outstanding. Utilizing advanced Sony audio technology, it delivers clear, detailed sound that immerses listeners in their favorite music, movies, or games. The richness and depth of the audio elevate the listening experience, providing a sense of presence that's hard to beat. Design-wise, the Ult Field 1 impresses with its modern aesthetic and sturdy build. Its slim profile and minimalist design make it a stylish addition to any room, while its durable construction ensures longevity. The wireless functionality adds convenience, allowing users to place the speaker wherever they desire without being tethered by cables. A notable feature of the Ult Field 1 is its compatibility with the Sony Music Center app. This app allows users to customize the EQ settings and control various other aspects of the speaker, enhancing the overall user experience. Being able to tailor the sound to personal preferences adds another layer of versatility to the speaker. However, there are a couple of areas where the Ult Field 1 falls short. Firstly, the stereo separation could be improved. While the sound is immersive, audiophiles may find the spatial imaging lacking compared to dedicated stereo setups. Additionally, the battery life, while decent, could be extended to provide longer playback time on a single charge. Overall, the Sony Ult Field 1 wireless speaker earns a solid rating of 4 stars. Its exceptional sound quality, stylish design, and compatibility with the Sony Music Center app make it a compelling choice for audio enthusiasts. With some refinements to stereo imaging and battery life, it has the potential to be a true standout in the wireless speaker market.

Thought these speakers did seem much louder in store, They are well worth the price. I recommend purchasing two, which gives a more surround sound feeling to these speakers. The “ULT” works very well as well in increasing bass and volume.

Hi NathanielS,
We’re thrilled to hear that the ULT FIELD 1 is delivering that powerful bass you were looking for! You hit the nail on the head regarding the Stereo Pair feature—pairing two speakers not only creates that immersive "surround" feel but also provides a much wider soundstage than a single unit. It's also great to know the ULT button is helping you dial in the extra volume and low-end punch for your music.
Thanks for choosing Sony.

Speaker looks amazing and built strong and durable but I wish it was Louder! Bass is decent on the speaker overall I would buy it again and recommend it to others

Great sound, quality, light and easy to connect any blue tooth such as a phone or computer. Works in small spaces and as a replacement for a bose speaker didn't play loud enough when used in a large gym aeribic fitness area. I upgraded to the ult field 5 which solved all probkems but is significanly heavier so noticable when carrying around to jobs 5-6 days a week. Both are great!

Hi StaceyH,
It is great to hear you are so pleased with the Sony ULT FIELD 3 and found it to be a speaker with great sound, high quality, and effortless Bluetooth connectivity! We appreciate your detailed comparison and feedback on how well the ULT FIELD 3 performs in small spaces. It's helpful to know that while you needed the extra power of the ULT FIELD 5 for a large gym environment, you still found the FIELD 3 to be a superb speaker that is noticeably lighter and more convenient.
Thank you for choosing Sony!
Best regards,
Dominick
