I had high hopes for this purchase, but the earbuds failed in multiple areas, so they were returned. I currently own wired Bose noise cancelling earbuds and wife has Apple Air Pods 2, so I have good reference points. Positives: Good, not great ANC, but this could be due to fit. From a few technical reviews, Apple Air Pods 2 (10 dB ANC reduction), Sony & Bose QC II (~ 30 dB ANC reduction) at 1000 Hz and below (e.g., airplane engine drone). Bad: (1) The main body of the earbud is mounted above the ear canal (see the stock pictures) without support below the ear canal. Talking or chewing causes the earbuds to loosen, sometimes fall out, and affects ANC quality. (2) I have been professionally fitted for earplugs and know the size of my ear canals. Most earbuds fit out of the box (average size). I had to use the super small (SS) plugs to get a reasonable fit without being uncomfortable and ear canal hurting after 15 minutes. (3) Fully charged the battery lasted 4 hours and 22 minutes on a cross country flight with ANC turned on. The literature says 6 hours max (ANC) and 7 hours (w/o ANC). (4) I have Apple products. Sony uses USB-C but does not provide the charging cable. I purchased Bose QC II earbuds for the flight home, A huge improvement compared to the new Sony earbuds. Bose's ANC was slightly better, they stayed in place even while eating, were comfortable, and lasted 5 hours 45 minutes (ANC on) before receiving a low battery alert. Bose's technical specification is a 6 hour battery life.

Hi KevinR, Thanks for sharing your experience with the new Sony XM5 Wireless earbuds. We're sad to hear that you are not satisfied with the new model, which made you return it. We understand that finding the perfect size earbuds can vary from person to person. At Sony, we are always looking to improve our product quality and features. We have noted your input about the size and will be sure to forward this feedback to the appropriate department. For the battery life, the available usage hours may be different depending on the settings of various functions and conditions of use. Again, we appreciate all your inputs and these will surely help in future productions. Thanks and regards, -Craig

Really good product when I had them for the few weeks before I misplaced them in the case. There is no way to activate them on "find my device" if they are in the case and not connected to your phone. That is something that I will have to have next time I purchase earbuds. I have the older version xm3s that I can still use and sound quality is very similar. The battery is the reason I upgraded which is very good in this product, but without a find my device ability, I would hesitate to buy them again. The case is so small, almost half the size of my XM3 case and misplacing the case is much easier. I know it sounds crazy, but now that I have lost them, I will not buy another set unless it has an ability for the case to be found.

Hi Dori,
That's truly frustrating to hear about misplacing your Sony WF-1000XM5 True Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds, especially when you were enjoying their performance so much. We understand how important a "find my device" feature is, particularly for the case when earbuds are stored within it, and we appreciate you highlighting this as a critical consideration for your next purchase.
We're glad to hear you found the sound quality excellent and the battery life a significant upgrade. Your feedback about the smaller case and the need for a comprehensive tracking solution, even when not connected to a phone, is incredibly valuable and has been shared with our product development team. We're always looking for ways to enhance user experience and peace of mind.
Thanks for choosing Sony.

Pros: - Excellent sound quality, fairly customizable via an app. - No "pumping" effect when used for exercising/jogging. Cons: - Frequent stuttering. I've owned many pairs of less expensive wireless earbuds which didn't have this problem. I generally stream from an iPhone 15 and iPad. - Occasional complete audio quality downgrade. You'll notice everything sounds "pixel-y" all of the sudden and you'll have to put the headphones back in the case to reset them before the problem will resolve itself. - The capabilities of the ANC for these headphones is wildly exaggerated as 99% of the noise cancellation is passive. Whether the "ANC" has any affect at all will be largely dependent on the anatomy of your ear and how forcefully/deep your willing to insert the earbud. ANC is either on or off. You have no control over the strength of the ANC. - Connecting to two devices at once is a non-starter. The headphones will constantly send a "pause" request to one of the devices causing your media to stop every few seconds. The only solution is to disable connections to two devices at once. - Just poor user ergonomics in general - things like having to put the headphones back in the case to sync them to a new device. The "touch" controls on the earbuds are frustrating to use and the audio feedback effect for a tap is impossible to hear over music, so you end up unsure whether your tap was registered or not - This is potentially subjective, but the foam earbuds (no rubber/silicon earbuds are provided) are not high quality and will not stay in your ear. - Overpriced, considering the factors above. Consider other brands - my recommendation would be to try Jabra.

Over all, they sound good. I upgraded when I was having battery issues with the xm4 model. The battery life here is stellar. This model has similar memory foam ear tips, which I like, and the touch sensors are a little better. The noise canceling is no different to me than just having it turned off, the ear tips block out enough sound that noise cancelation is useless and just uses battery. If you just turn the sound setting to "off" they isolate you without using extra battery, so for the money, the sound cancelation is kind of a let down. Ambient sound mode isn't as good as the previous model so if you're only using one ear bud, you still feel like your ear is plugged up, even with ambient sound turnned up to 20. When I switch between ambient and off, they stop my music. Same thing happens if you use temporary awareness mode. The left ear bud has begun having connectivity issues and the right bud's having some bugs with the touch sensor not working for playback unless you change the function to something else and then switch it back. They no longer make a tone to signify that they are turned on and connected, on either bud when used alone or together. Sometimes they have random functionality issues when the app is active. I really like the way they sound, fit, and the app is ok, they're just very disappointing especially having so many issues in the past with Sony. I'll probably see if I can get them replaced under warranty, as they're less than 6 months old. I want to be clear, this is at no fault of Best Buy. I've not tried other equal models, but I'm leaning toward that. If the connectivity and other bugs weren't an issue, I'd be able to look past the inherent flaws they have with noise cancelation.

I purchased these expecting them to outperform my Galaxy Buds Pro 3, but I was disappointed. I spent the first few hours comparing both, and the Galaxy Buds Pro 3 delivered a more dynamic sound with richer bass that the XM5s just couldn’t match. The Galaxy Buds were also noticeably louder. On the positive side, the XM5s fit more comfortably than the Buds Pro 3. However, I found myself constantly readjusting them whenever I smiled or engaged in any activity, which became frustrating. Even after switching to the larger ear tips, the fit didn’t improve significantly. Overall, while the comfort was better, the sound quality and stability fell short of my expectations. I’ll be returning these.

There is truly nothing like these sony earbuds. The quality of sound is outstanding. The ANC is better than my over ear bose and my moms over ear sony headphones. The sound is way better than any airpods I’ve tried. BUT…i have had these earbuds fail on me twice for the same reason. The right earbud for both pairs would suddenly not allow ambient noise through. That feature that actively sends the noise of your surroundings into the earbud so you can hear? It just stops. And nothing fixes it. I felt like i was going crazy or i was losing hearing in my right ear. I wanna like these so so bad but i cant trust them if two separate pairs failed for the exact same reason.

There are very good things about these earbuds, and also very annoying things about these earbuds. The case is nice. It looks and feels very premium with it's matte finish and semi-gloss, "SONY" lettering. It is also very compact compared to it's predecessors. The earbuds themselves also look pretty nice. They have a glossy finish, with a matte touch sensor. They're also much smaller than their predecessors. The XM4's were notably bulky. When it comes to comfort with these earbuds though, there are really two, true options. Either you use smaller size eartips, and affect the experience of the earbuds' capabilites without feeling pain after just 15 minutes of use, or you use a larger size to ensure a good seal for noise cancellation and music, while also putting yourself through agony. Also, if I had to be perfectly honest, I despise the app. There's a lot of bloatware on it, and it is not very in-depth. Anker's software, features, and customization blows this out of the water. Also, not even that impressed by the quality of the music. It sounds like any other expensive pair of earbuds. There are instances where I beliece my Liberty 4's, which are half the price, sounded better. If only I knew where they went so I could compare side-by-side.

Excellent sound quality, by far some of the best sounding earbuds I have ever used. It's a shame that the touch controls make them impossible to put in without touching everything, they are quite uncomfortable (and I sleep with earplugs so I am used to them), and the noise cancellation is basically non existent, you can not tell the difference between it being on and off, the only real cancellation comes from the foam tips and it being earplugs. I switched to the bose qc ultra earbuds that have amazing noise cancellation, comparable sound quality, and better comfort and controls.

I had the XM4’s and my headphones would randomly connect to my phone at times which was annoying. I got these because I loved the noise canceling on the 4’s and was looking forward to the upgrades and smaller design. These headphones sound great but I give 2 stars because they won’t stop connecting to my phone when I’m not using them. They’re in my backpack in another room and they connect to my phone. They’ll be in my pocket (in the case of course) and they’ll connect to my phone. It is so annoying that I really just want to get a different pair of headphones. I’m at the point where I don’t care how good they are, they won’t stop pairing when they’re in the case. The XM4’s have done it a handful of times but these. ALL THE TIME!!!! I am so frustrated with these.

I'm pretty disappointed in this purchase. I paid $300 for these earbuds and they constantly have issues. The microphone will randomly stop working or will sound really muffled. The earbud tips fell apart after a couple months. The software to control the earbuds has ads when you open it. The "customizable" touch sensors are not truly customizable. Jabra and SkullCandy do a far better job with their software. The ANC is really good and the overall sound is great but not worth the price. Bottom line: Save you money and get something cheaper.

These sound great once you setup the EQ settings. What makes these terrible is the ANC, there’s an issue with voice cancellation, since I can hear people talking clearly. They do cancel sometimes other noises but even with proper sealed these let a lot of noise in. They dont feel like they hsve ANC. I will be returning these, not worth the $300 price tag.

The ear buds fall out and the active noise is bad. The ANC is good though sound is decent, battery life is great, but there is no touch feature everything is done by tapping. The case is tiny and these thing will be easy to lose not to mention the box it comes in is just a recycled cheap box. They kept falling out of my ear. They sound good but have a bad base sound when you hit bumps or it hears loud thump noise. I was walking and with each step there was a base noise in my ear. These things can probably be fixed with updates but I don't see the high expense worth it. The ambient sound is also bad.

Hi JohnW, thank you for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear you really enjoy the noise cancellation and magnificent sound quality of the Sony - WF1000XM5. But we're sorry to learn you experienced audio drops while using them. We understand this can be frustrating.
Here are a few steps and recommendations that can help to solve the problem:
1- Try to rotate the earbuds depending on the shape of your ear. Covering the microphone can affect the performance causing audio dropouts.
2- Set the headset to [Prioritize Stable Connection]. You can do this by using the Sony Headphones connect app.
3- If you're enjoying music from your smartphone, the situation may be improved by closing unnecessary apps or restarting your smartphone
4- Turn off the Adaptive Sound Control setting. This can be found on the Sony Headphones Connect app too.

This has not been fixed yet with a firmware update. Huge Sony fan, I own these, and both sets of link buds. I feel like both ambient mode and anc are weaker than the Linkbuds S. The only improvement I hear is better balance and over all sound quality with longer battery life. These fall out of my ears constantly and the glossy surface is slippery and oily feeling after wearing. They're not bad, but also not what they should have been. I'd probably rate them higher if not for my experience with the link buds s.

We're sorry to hear that you have an issue with the fit of the WF1000XM5. You can change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. When changing the earbud tips, try the earbud tip sizes in order from the larger ones to the smaller ones. The most suitable size of the earbud tips for left and right ears may be different.
