Music quality was great with excellent noise cancelling, however anything else like calls or podcasts it picks up the wind noise easily so that was a bit of a nuisance. The other issue was that the headphones physically got too hot and heavy on my ears after wearing for about 10 minutes. I ended up returning them because I couldn't deal with the heat. I had to take them off too frequently.

Hi MaxwellB,
Thanks so much for sharing your honest feedback about the WH-1000XM4 headphones.
We want to genuinely apologize that the heat and weight issues kept you from enjoying them fully. We truly are sorry about that nuisance, especially since you found the music quality and noise-canceling to be excellent.
We also appreciate you bringing up the wind noise during calls and podcasts. That's valuable input.
It’s completely understandable that you returned them given those issues. We hope that down the road, as we introduce new products, you'll be willing to give Sony another opportunity.
We appreciate your review of our Sony headphones and apologize for your experience.
Sincerely,
Estefany

The battery in this product stopped working within a week, and the company made it very difficult to efficiently and ethically resolve this problem, leading me to keep this product for several years without being able to turn it on.

The quality is great, but if you're choosing these for the cream/off-white color shown on the Best Buy website, think again. In reality, they are more of a brown-grey color. I purchased them today but will be returning them tomorrow.

These headphones have many great features. They are very comfortable to wear. They are lightweight. Noise cancellation is very good, but without music playing there is an audible hissing sound from the noise cancellation. The app is great to work with, and connection and setup were a breeze thanks to the consumer friendly app. The app can take into account that you are even wearing glasses when setting up. Doing a wireless firmware update was very quick. There are many choices to choose from with the EQ feature. But the audio quality was not there for me, which was a big surprise given how many customers rate it very highly, and given high ratings from influencer reviews. The instant I started listening to music, I knew something did not sound right. They have a good amount of bass, but it sounds muddy to me, and middle and high tones lacked definition. Instrument separation and clarity was also sub par. I subscribe to Amazon HD music which allows for the highest quality streaming experience. I also tried listening with the cord attached, and many different equalizer settings, but the audio did not improve. In some sense the sound was actually irritating to listen to because of this. I have listened to the Bose 700NC and my old headphones were the BOSE QC 15 wired version, which I compared and thought had much better audio quality and clarity. Maybe these headphones were defective, but in any case I decided not to pursue it and returned them. Given all the other very positive features, I really wanted these to work out.

Hi g2345, we're glad that you like the comfort and the consumer-friendly app of the headphones. It's unfortunate the sound quality didn't live up to your expectations. The hissing sound is also not what these headphones normally produce. Updating the software of the headphones might have improved its performance and changed your experience. We hope you also tried the equalizer function of the Sony Headphones Connect app to improve the sound quality. Sony takes all feedback seriously. Rest assured that this will help us improve our products. Unfortunately I did not love these and ended up returning. The set up was not easy, I did not like that I needed to download apps in order for these to connect. They also had trouble connecting at times. The quality for music wasn’t great. Used with apple products (ipad and iphone), and plugged into a windows computer with the wire provided. Another problem is that they do not connect to Windows bluetooth. Now the pros, they do last a while so battery life is great and the noise cancellation is great too. I did not feel discomfort wearing them for a while. Also liked that it announces battery life and when the headphones are off and on.

Hi MDReview, Thank you for sharing your feedback on the headphones. We are sorry to hear about the issues you experienced. It seems like you faced several challenges with the setup and connectivity, particularly with the need to download apps and the difficulty in connecting to Windows Bluetooth. Additionally, the music quality did not meet your expectations when used with Apple products and a Windows computer and the unit had to be returned.
On the positive side, it's great to hear that you found the battery life and noise cancellation to be excellent, and that the headphones were comfortable to wear for extended periods. The feature of announcing battery life and power status also seems to have been a useful addition for you.
For future reference, if you encounter similar issues with other Sony products, you might find helpful information and support on the Sony Community forums. For example, there are discussions about Bluetooth headphone connection problems and troubleshooting steps for the Sony Headphones Connect app. You can visit the Sony Community or send us an email at socialsupport@am.sony.com for more details and support.

I have had these since 2020 and they have worked great for the most part. There are 2 things that are VERY bad about these, 1 from the start and the other just started happening. From the very start I have not been a fan of the fact that you can only pair these to 1 device. Technically 2 but since you need to use an app to control them 1 device will be your phone. The other thing is that when it fails it will deafen you in 1 ear. The incredibly loud (able to be heard from the second floor of my home while I was in the basement) will cause AT LEAST considerable short term pain in 1 ear. I had them on when the issue happened and it was easily the loudest, sharpest and most painful sound I have heard. For comparison, I was in the Navy and worked on the flight deck of a carrier (IYAOYAS) and this was much worse than anything I experienced there. Having said all that, the sound quality was very good and the noise cancelling really did eliminated things like the PC fan noise from my system and the heating/AC noise. The bass is good as well and I feel the build quality is equally decent. The battery life lasted all day with constant use and the time to charge is very short. The range was good and I was able to move through a 1200 SQFT 2 story home while remaining connected to a PC in the basement with no issues. I would have given 4 stars if they had not tried to murder 1 ear.

I love these headphones. These are the most comfortable, best sounding headphones I have ever had. Better than a comparable Bose. The problem is they don't last. I bought them in 2022. After several months the battery stopped charging. Looked on Youtube, talked to tech support and tried all of the resets. Nothing worked. They sent me a brand new pair. I was very happy. Less than a year later the exact same thing happened. They sent me another pair. Now that pair is not charging. Talked to customer service and they said the origninal pair has a 1 year warranty, replacements only have a 90 day warranty. So 3 pair in two years, all with the same problem. Apparently this is a common problem because there are videos all over youtube. So even though I loved them I cannot spend another $350 on a pair of headphones that have never lasted even a year. Bose here I come.

After using these headphones along with Beats Studio, Wh- 910n, these headphones are overhyped, overpriced, but over performed. I like the comfort which over did the Beats Studio. They're aesthetically pleasing like Beats. The noise cancelling over performed. Compared to the Cases for each of the headphones, the XM-4s have a cuter and more protective case. The only problems that I have had with the XM-4s is that they're hard to connect to any of my Apple devices, and they randomly disconnect and turn off out of nowhere which is neither rare or common. But compared to the expensive Air Pods Pro Max from Apple, these have way better sound quality and more minimalistic with swipe on the right side of the Headphones, you can access ambient sound, pause, play, and play your next song. Compared to the wh- 910n, it is hard to turn on Siri by just touching the pad of your right cup which the wh-910, It is more worth getting the WH- 910 which are 100 dollars less but sacrifice the aesthetic for the better quality, and better base.

I was excited to try the Sony WH-1000XM4 after hearing so many great things about its sound quality and noise cancellation. While the audio performance is definitely impressive, I’ve been experiencing consistent ear pain whenever I use the headphones. After wearing them for even a short period, my ears start to feel uncomfortable, and the pressure becomes hard to ignore. I tried adjusting the fit several times, but the discomfort remains, making it difficult to enjoy the music or wear the headphones for longer sessions. Unfortunately, despite their excellent technical features, the lack of comfort has been a major drawback for me. Overall, the Sony WH-1000XM4 may work well for many users, but if you’re sensitive to ear pressure or tight-fitting ear cups, you might face similar discomfort. I’m disappointed because I really wanted to like these headphones, but the ear pain makes it hard to recommend them.

Thank you for sharing your detailed and honest feedback, SrinivasB.
We are delighted to hear that you found the WH-1000XM4's audio performance and technical features, like the noise cancellation, to be impressive. However, we are truly sorry and concerned to learn that you are experiencing consistent ear pain and discomfort after even short periods of use. We understand that excellent features mean little if the product is painful to wear, and we sincerely apologize that the fit has been a major drawback for you despite your efforts to adjust the earcups.
Comfort is a top priority, especially for premium noise-canceling headphones designed for long listening sessions. While the headband clamping force is engineered for secure sealing, we regret that it is causing you pressure-related pain.
If you would like to explore any final comfort adjustments, our support team can offer personalized tips. Otherwise, we appreciate you bringing this specific feedback about fit sensitivity to our attention as it is invaluable for future product development.
Best regards, Gus, Sony Social Media Team

These headphones are chanty garbage for the price. I wore them for 2 months, not even daily, and one of the ear cups snapped off just from removing them off my head. Sony warranty does NOT cover physical damage and they want me to pay hundreds of dollars to repair their poorly made product. On top of that any time you try to slightly adjust the ears, settings get messed up and your music will pause. The noise cancelling feature also kicks on and off at random times. These just do not make for a great listening experience and they are not well made. You're better off getting a cheap pair of SkullCandy. At least when they break you're not out $500+. Do not buy this product.

Very good headphones with lots of software but the software and the amount collected information is absolutely ridiculous. You need a lawyer to explain what you're agreeing to. Honestly I have no idea why these are so complicated. No ps4 or 5 support even though they are superior to the sets they make for the systems. Pretty much a let down other than the battery life and sound quality after finally getting them set up. If you are getting them just for your phone and dont care about signing your life away these are for you.

I was really excited about receiving these but that excitement turned to frustration when I tried pairing these with another device after initial setup from my iPhone. When I tried to setup multi device use, the toggle in the app just refuses to activate. When I tried to connect to another device I paired with such as my MacBook or desktop PC, I am unable to do so without forcing the headphones into pairing mode. There are a several Reddit threads with the same issue even with the latest firmware update. There's just no seemless way for me to go from my phone to my laptop. For $350 plus tax, there’s no excuse for this and I’m hoping it’s just a select few with these defects or just a bad batch. These do sound great, and are comfortable headphones but I'm returning these if Sony doesn't address this. As of now, I can not recommended these headphones until this is fixed.

They're okay. For the amount of money I paid for these headphones, the sound quality is basic and not all that great. Sounds mostly muffled even if you customize the sound. Great quality sound. Loved these. But it has been under a year, and they have broken due to a defect in the right swivel piece. I was literally putting them on my head like I always do, and the right swivel cracked. When I went to Sony for the 1-year warranty, they said they wouldn't cover physical damage even though this is a defect common in this specific kind of Sony headphone. They then wanted me to pay $90 only for labor to get them fixed. This $90 did not include the other cost that would be required. I would also have to pay for shipping both ways, which was $20 each. So if you don't mind them breaking in under a year and paying such a large price, then get them. The headphones have good sound quality but take a long time to connect to devices and can sometimes randomly disconnect. The sound quality is phenomenal, though, so there's that. But all in all, I feel like I've been robbed and wasted my money.

I had these headphones for a couple days with hours of listening but returned them. The noise canceling feature was amazing when it worked. My AC was almost completely silenced and noises while running errands were much quieter, making my audio content much more engrossing. If you’re a bass head, you will be underwhelmed but if you like a nice balance of highs, mids, and a decent amount of low frequencies, you’ll like these. Unfortunately the pair I bought started to develop a slight hissing noise. It sounded like wind in a microphone or the faint sound of a waterfall in the distance. The hissing sound would take me out of the experience of my music or podcast. Whenever there was a pause in a conversation or a fade out of music, I would start to notice the hiss. I thought switching between devices would be easy but it was cumbersome. Switching from an iPad to an iPhone took some effort, having to restart the app or switch off Bluetooth on one device. The app isn’t properly designed for the iPad either so you’ll either have thick black borders or a stretched UI meant for phones. I will reconsider purchasing these headphones again since I hear so much praise for Sony’s noise canceling tech but I will wait a few months. By then I hope manufacturing, software, and firmware is refined to avoid this problem. Best Buy has been great and I will continue shopping here for years.

They sound great. I like being able to listen to podcasts while I’m cooking, for example. They also have good battery life. When fully charged, these headphones will likely last 3-4 days before fully running out of power. Unfortunately, these headphones have problems with randomly cutting out and cutting briefly. It happens often enough to impact the listening experience. I don’t know if this is only a problem on PC, but Sony really needs to fix this problem. I’m somewhat satisfied with this product, but, if I need to replace these headphones, I’ll try a different brand. I’m not likely to recommend this product, unless there’s a fix I don’t know about.

Coming from a Beats Solo Pro, these were a massive disappointment. It hurt the top of my head after 1 hour and gave me a headache from it. The noise cancelling is better by a small amount, and the sound quality was decent after some EQ’ing (out of the box is way too bassy and muddy). Even after EQ was not much better than the Pro as is. The ear pads are fairly comfy, and the technical upgrades are admirable, but for me the lack of comfort was horrible. Tried a couple more sessions but returned after 1 day. I’ll either wait for the Bose 700 to go on sale or try out the AirPods Studio when they come out.
