I’ve bought these a couple of months back. I love everything about them when it comes to the noise cancellation and sound and even the app where u can customize the sound. However connecting it to my laptop tends to give me a headache. I use an HP 2 in 1 laptop and it drives me insane. I’ve sat here for the past 20 minutes trying to connect my headphones to my laptop and it still won’t work. It says it connect at moment and then my show would play but no sound would come out and then this ear piercing sound comes out of it basically shutting down my headphones. I would have to then repeat the process over and over and over again in hopes that it would eventually connect.

Hi Manar, Thank you for sharing your experience with the Sony XM5 Wireless headphones. While we're glad that you are impressed with the sound quality and noise canceling performance of the headphones, we're sad to hear that you are having connectivity concerns.
To ensure you get the best Bluetooth connection, please set the headphones Sound Quality Mode to “Priority on stable connection." Choosing the correct Sound Quality Mode improves communication between your headphones and your mobile device.

It was average because they sound good but they slip off your head to easy and it’s relatively annoying can’t even do hardcore exercises nor running without them falling off or slipping. But other than that they sound good. Also they turn my music off with any small movement or wind/ water.

Hi AlejandroO,
We appreciate your feedback on the WH-1000XM5 and understand the frustration with the fit during high-impact activities; since these are designed primarily for high-fidelity listening rather than sports, they lack the grip and water resistance needed for workouts. Regarding the audio cutting out, this is likely the Speak-to-Chat or touch sensor reacting to movement or wind, both of which can be easily disabled in the Sony | Headphones Connect app to ensure your music stays on.
Thanks for choosing Sony.
Best regards,
Eliab

I have had these for roughly six months and have used them virtually everyday. I love the sound they produce and the adaptive noise cancelling. I usually used then in transparency mode and would occasionally have to remove a earmuff if the person was speaking too softly. Unfortunately, I had to send them in to get repaired because the plastic housing broke. They were never dropped and essentially lived in the case when they weren't on my head. So I'm kind of at a loss as to how they broken. That being said, I have a sizable head (7 5/8 hat size) so maybe daily use did it. Either way I would reccomend these to a friend with a smaller head. I do wish they had some metal in the housing to make it a bit more durable.

Loved everything about it except for the bulkiness and the fit. It tugs on my scalp so that's a no brainer. Returned. If only they kept the xm4 fit and design combined w this lighter weight and tech. The beam mic and ai voice processing tech is incredible. The noise cancellation on the mic is possibly better than xm4 but I think Bose voice isolation is better because I tested w music on the soundbar and no one could hear blasting on zoom while I talked! Just use Sony in a quiet setting and way more crystal clear than Bose.

Thank you for your detailed feedback, ElizabethN.
We’re sorry to hear the WH-1000XM5 wasn't the right fit for you. We redesigned this model with a slimmer "noiseless" headband to reduce weight, but we understand that the different distribution of pressure can feel less comfortable for some compared to the fold-flat design of the XM4.
It’s great to hear you put our AI-based voice pickup technology to the test! We take a lot of pride in that "crystal clear" vocal clarity, and it’s helpful to know how it performed for you on Zoom compared to other brands. Your feedback regarding the headband "tugging" and the overall bulkiness is invaluable as we look toward future designs. Thank you for giving them a try and for choosing Sony.

The noise canceling on these headphones is amazing. But the sound doesn't feel right, its missing base and sometimes can sound a bit low. They're definitely overpriced with cheap quality material. They also stain very easily, any minor oils on your hands will stain them. Constantly having to wipe off.

Hello DarenP,
Thank you for sharing your experience with the WH-1000XM5 headphones. We are truly sorry to hear about the repeated issues with the hinges breaking. We understand how frustrating it must be to have your headphones break, especially when you rely on them for their sound quality and noise cancellation.
Regarding the warranty, we want to clarify that it covers defects in materials or workmanship during normal use for one year. Unfortunately, physical damage like broken hinges caused by accidental mishandling is not covered. After a thorough review, our team found the problem to be hardware-related and outside the scope for a replacement under this policy.

Sound good, look goofy, feel ok. Worse noise canceling than the wh-1000xm3. If you are a soft hipster type who doesn't know what a hammer is for the rubber coating might not start wearing off in a month or two. Maybe don't mow the lawn with them, or paint, or do anything but sit sweat-sweat free staring at your phone. They are not German Shephard proof. If the headband needs to be replaced there is a cable that attaches the two sides that runs through the bracket where the connector cannot fit. Thus, to do any significant repair to the headband, including the soft, ultra delicate faux rubber around the padding you better know where to source and how to crimp on an extraordinarily brittle 16 pin connector. Thank god for ebay and electrical tape. I won't be winning any fashion awards with my Frankenphones. If I had known they were so difficult to repair I wouldn't have purchased.

The audio on this headphone is very impressive. My only issue is the build quality, specifically the ear cushions. They feel very cheap and I can already tell by just few uses that they’ll deteriorate really fast. If you’re an avid headphone user I wouldn’t recommend this because of the cushions. You’ll think that for something this expensive Sony will take their time to ensure that the build quality is fantastic .

I have owned these headphones for roughly 6 months and they have roughly 50 hours of use. I grabbed them to use them for their 51st’ish hour of use ans the left ear piece snapped off as I was putting them on. I do not have a large head. I have owned and bought for others: XM2s, XM3s, and now these XM5s. I think Sony got it wrong with the structural change.

Hi Baln,
We are sorry to hear that the sound profile and noise canceling of your WH-1000XM5 headphones didn't live up to your expectations. For a more balanced sound, we recommend using the "Custom" EQ settings in the Sony | Headphones Connect app to reduce the Clear Bass levels. Additionally, ensuring a tight seal and running the ANC Optimizer in the app can significantly improve the noise-canceling performance.
Thanks for choosing Sony.

Having used the XM3 and XM4, I went in expecting incremental improvement in the noise canceling feature that has a competitor sweating. So expectations on using the XM5 weren’t as high as before. From an aesthetic point, I like the new design. But after getting it in my hands and getting a feel for it, I find that I also do not like the design decisions put into this. Many headphones that have cans that swivel so that the cups themselves rest on your chest make it easier to hang your headphones around your neck. Not only does it protect the inside of the cans themselves but it also prevents whatever potential dust and particles from flying in. In the XM5, the cans now swivel in the opposite direction, where the open side of the cans are now facing outward when they rest on your chest. This is a major step back in how headphones are designed. And yes, I did double check that the right side can is undoubtedly right. Another odd design decision is that the XM5 is not as compact as before. The XM3 and XM4 were both collapsible so they can be packed and compact for travel. There is no such thing in the XM5 this time around. I find it a bit sad that this is not part of the design any more. And it makes the whole redesign of the XM5 more questionable than praise worthy. Lastly, as I should have expected, included cables are the 3.5mm analog cable that can be connected to a headphone jack and a USB charging. The analog cable can be used with or without active noise canceling turned on. If your headphone has no power left, the headphones can still be used, which is a side bonus. The USB charging cable is still a massive disappointment, being a mere 6 inches in length. When paying full price for these headphones, you kind of expected to have a longer cable. This has been happening ever since I got the XM3. This may have been going on for longer but I do not own any prior to that. Even a 12 inch (1ft) charging cable would have been better than a pitiful 6 inches. The active noise canceling (ANC) ability of the XM5 has improved yet again but only slightly. Like the XM4 before it, the improvement is only minor and blocks out a bit more. Train noise from my commute is reduced to a whisper and makes it easy to doze off. And with music playing at the same time, it becomes easy to miss automated and train operator messages played over the train’s speakers. You can still temporarily turn off ANC by placing your right palm on the right can, a feature that is retained from previous generations. On a similar note, touch controls are still on the right can. And much like the previous generations, there is no texture to make it easier to feel out the touch controls. For new owners, it makes it a bit tricky and difficult to learn the touch controls. There is an audio cue on swipe so it is a minor improvement from the previous generation. Audio quality is just as great as before. I prefer sound that is as neutral as possible. Meaning, it’s not heavy on the low frequency or tinny from high frequency. Such taste can always be adjusted using an equalizer. Codec when using the headphones over Bluetooth is LDAC. Unfortunately this codec is not available for Apple users. There is 360 Reality Audio but that remains untested due to limited streaming services, where I am either not using or not subscribed to. For call audio quality, I believe it’s a bit better in picking up my voice. Even with a face mask on, it picks up my voice without the need for The companion app, Sony Headphones Connect, allows you to adjust some settings for the headphones. Sadly, adjusting the noise canceling level of the headphone is no longer possible, which is a major shame since there are times when I want to fine tune how much noise is reduced. Next to the power button on the left can of the headphone is a button that is now strictly for switching noise canceling mode or custom function set by the app via double-press. Lastly, the headphone is comfortable to wear. It is light and doesn’t weigh down, despite the change in the top headband having less cushion/padding than before. I can potentially wear it for hours without any discomfort. It’s great for long travels and commutes and is worth having for such an occasion. Is this worth the asking price? Unfortunately, I have to say no. The XM4 is still available and can be had for less. So far, the improvements over generations are incremental and nothing revolutionary. The design choices for the XM5 doesn’t seem to make much sense and felt like a step backward. Not being able to fine tune the noise canceling level like before is also a downer. It’s surprising that for the XM5 it is not a clear winner. So I cannot recommend this for old or new users. Verdict: Not recommended The Good: Better ANC than before, great audio, comfortable to wear for long sessions The Bad: cans swivel in opposite direction, not compact, only 3 levels of ANC The Ugly: the thought of having random particles blow into the cans while worn around the neck

The headphones are comfortable best in class ANC but the price is all for canceling sound and not audio quality. The bass is none existent and voice is muffled not to mention low volume the produce at the max. Can improve a bit with EQ. For pro travelers with ANC in mind, get them. So I ended up buying these the day they were released. First thing I noticed was they are super light weight! Once I got them connected to my iPhone the sound is fantastic, battery life is superb too! My biggest disappointment with these cans is the ANC! I took these on a flight today from Indianapolis to Las Vegas so I was on the plane for 4 hours just to find out these lack the ANC other headphones such as the airpod pro max and the Bose 700 offer. I own the AirPods max and have used a pair of Bose 700 extensively, especially on flights so hearing how the new Sony’s performed was very disappointing. If the AirPods max block out 95% of the noise I would say the Sony’s are 70%. It’s hard to explain but if you fly a lot then expect to be disappointed. You can obviously judge for yourself but after I got back in to town I drove to Best Buy just to take them back. ANC is a huge plus for me when I buy headphones, especially for the price that Sony is charging for them I want them to perform the way I expect. Apple is still the king of ANC and it’s by a mile, once again if you don’t believe me give it a try and you’ll see for yourself. I really have no idea how the reviews on YouTube are saying they’re that much better cause they’re not. If ANC isn’t a big deal for you then the weight, battery life, soundstage and look of the headphones are definitely superb! On another note the ambient mode is better than the XM4’s and the Bose 700 but fall to the AirPods max. Also I need to add the connectivity is great for an android but it’s not going to come close to how apple connects with the air pods max. Yes there is the price difference between the two but like they said, “You get what you pay for”

I regret this purchase. So I was tempted to run out and buy the XM5s after viewing all the positive reviews about them on Youtube. I opened the box, removed the case and pulled out the headphones. Here are my pros and cons after using them for a few hours. Pros: 1. Seamless design - less gaps between the earcups, pads and hinges than the XM4s 2. No creaking- Because they don't fold, there's no creaking of the armbands like with the XM4s. 3. Multipoint connection- can connect to 2 devices simultaneously 4. Larger earcups- a little wider and deeper than the earcups on the XM4s 5. Sound quality is more clear, less muffled than the prior XM series. Phone call quality is much better. Cons: 1. ANC is worse than the XM4s. You cannot change the level. Its only on or off. 2. Lacks the 40mm drivers necessary for stronger output like higher volume and bass. 3. Lacks NFC so you can't tap your phone to the earcup to turn it on and off. Came handy if your other hand was busy. 4. Cannot use high quality LDAC bluetooth codec on Android devices unless you download max high quality music from Spotify, Apple, Tidal and others which eats up huge storage space. Also, cannot use LDAC if multipoint is turned on. The Sony Music app will warn you of this. 5. No aptx codec limits the quality and range of music to download. Aptx was and is the standard for bluetooth music streaming/downloads. 6. Cannot fold. Takes up more storage space and makes them less compact to carry. For this price, I'll stick with the other XM-series from Sony. Even if these drop below $300 one day, I think I'll still pass.

Hi Adam,
Thank you for your review.
While we are thrilled that you are satisfied with the stylish & quality design, multipoint connection function, and exceptional phone call & sound quality (compared to the previous models) of our WH-1000XM5, we are really sorry if the noise canceling feature, volume & bass sound, LDAC feature on Android devices and when using the multipoint connection function, supported audio format, price, and build of these headphones didn't live up to your expectations. We are also sorry if these headphones don't have an NFC function.
For the noise canceling feature, the following article may help improve this function:
https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm5/v1/en/contents/TP1000534745.html
And for the loudness and bass sound, these headphones feature an equalizer (with the use of the Sony Headphones Connect app) that you can customize to your preferred sound levels to suit your music.
The WH-1000XM5 headphones have 2 processors that control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation and exceptional call quality. With a newly developed 30mm driver, DSEE – Extreme and Hi-Res audio support they provide awe-inspiring audio quality. Our Voice Pickup Technology uses 4 microphones that are calibrated to only pick up your voice, resulting in crystal clear calls. The automatic Speak to Chat feature will stop your music once you start talking and let in the ambient sound. With up to 30 hours of battery life and a quick charge feature. The new lightweight WH-1000XM5 headphones provide all day comfort in an elegant design.

Sound is great just like the WH1000XM3 model that I had BUT...the more features that are enable the more likely that the headphones start acting erratic. Sometimes the noise cancellation would stop and you would hear the entire outside world and then it would go back into noise cancellation mode. Sometimes it simply disconnects from your device for no reason at all. I tried to connect to my laptop and phone at the same time and I was able to do so but it didn't switch back to the phone very well. I had to turn bluetooth off of my laptop so that I could keep it exclusively on my iphone and then manually disconnect from the phone, re-enable bluetooth on the laptop, and reconnect on the laptop to use it for meetings through the laptop. Even with bluetooth off on the laptop and the "Connect 2 devices simultaneously" turned off on the headphones, the headphones will randomly disconnect from my phone. No other wireless headphones have done this with my iphone, not even the WH1000XM3 set I had before. Not randomly power down, randomly disconnect. All firmware and apps are up-to-date too. At the 299 (US dollars) price point, I can put up with the connection frustration when having to switch and its random disconnections because the sound quality is awesome. Just frustrating to deal with. iPhone 13 btw.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for sharing such a detailed review and for comparing your experience with the XM3s. We're glad to hear you're enjoying the sound quality, that's something we work had to deliver. At the same time, we apologize for the issues with the connection and unexpected behavior with noise cancellation, especially the inconsistent switching between devices
To address these concerns, even with the latest firmware update, try restarting them. The steps are listed in the link below:
https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm5/v1/en/contents/TP1000541012.html
If the issue persists, perform factory reset by following the instructions in the link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm5/v1/en/contents/TP1000541013.html
We hope the information helps. Thanks for choosing Sony.
