Purchased this almost exactly 6 months to the day and the THIN part of the headband snapped in my hands as i was putting the headphones on... just ridiculously bad design. now they want me to pay $100 just to fix it... so pretty much the unit ends up being $400... absolutely worthless other design issues There's no way to quickly turn on and turn off the touch controls, so if it's raining and you put a hoodie on it will continuously trigger the touch controls and will shuffle everything around similar to the above issue is the direction that the pads rotate; the pad rotate so that the touch controls are against your body, meaning the touch controls would get triggered randomly when your moving around! this also means the hard part of the pads are again your clavicle, which kinda hurts when you're moving around, or running. Positives Good sounds quality Good noise canceling feature, but not as good as the WH-1000XM4, in my opinion Honestly if you're looking into getting sony headphones, i would just the WH-1000XM4. but i wouldn't really bother getting any other sony products for myself.

Hello RoquetR,
Thank you for considering Sony products.
We regret the issues you have experienced with your WH1000XM5 headphones. The premature headband breakage, along with the concerns regarding the touch controls and ear pad design, is understandably disappointing. We recognize the inconvenience this has caused.
Your detailed feedback on the design and functionality is highly valued and will be promptly shared with the relevant team for assessment and ongoing product enhancement. We also appreciate your comments on the audio quality and noise-cancellation features, even with your preference for the previous model. Please be assured that your input will assist us as we continue to strive for improvements.

I used to love these headphones. I wore them very often, but I was always really gentle with them. I purchased them about a year and a 3 months ago. One day the hinge just snapped off. I wasn't doing anything strenuous. It just broke randomly because of the poor hinge design. The warranty is only one year (for the price it should be longer!), so I can't get a replacement, but it's not even covered by the warranty because they don't include physical damage. As much as I love these headphones for their comfort and sound quality, they are not the investment I thought they would be. Plenty of other better quality headphones that will last longer for this price.

I was very happy with these headphones, but they snapped after 22 months. These unfortunately lasted less than my XM3 and XM4 pairs. It feels like the prices continue to increase while the build quality decreases. Aside from breaking much sooner than they should've they had fantastic battery life and sound quality.

Just over a year after purchase—right past the factory warranty—the swivel connection cracked. I carefully superglued it, but that only extended its life by a month. A repair costs $150 to $200, nearly the same as the current sale price. I’m extremely disappointed in the build quality and Sony’s refusal to offer assistance, especially considering my original $400 investment. If you want great Bluetooth features and sound, you're better off putting your money into the more durable WH-1000XM4. As for me, I’ll be looking beyond Sony for my next purchase.

These headphones when i first got them were great but in further use they take time getting used to if your someone that want to sing along to songs while listening these aren’t for you. but my biggest issue is a year of having the plastic that connects the band and muffs broke…and it’s a 300 pair headphone so with buying these get the warranty and don’t wear these like beats it’s more for a work setting but honestly not worth the $300 their other alternatives.

Hi ZacharyD,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are truly sorry to hear that your WH-1000XM5 headphones experienced a break in the headband structure after a year of use. We understand how disappointing this is, especially for a premium product you initially enjoyed.
Regarding your experience with singing along to your music: it sounds like the Speak-to-Chat feature may be active. This is designed to pause audio when you speak, but it can be easily disabled in the Sony Sound Connect app so you can sing along uninterrupted.
While our standard warranty policy covers manufacturer defects or internal malfunctions, it typically excludes damage resulting from physical stress or impact. However, we want to ensure you can get back to your music as soon as possible.
To help get your headphones back in working order, we have partnered with our authorized service provider, Encompass. They offer professional repair options and can be reached at:

I don't think I've EVER purchased a "new" "upgraded" so called "next gen" tech item, and then so VERY much wanted my old one back. I had the XM4's headphones these XM5's aren't better or improved, to me. I paid $160 to upgrade and lost features! I prefer the old ear shape, I prefer that when I used to fold them into their case then I could also put them away in purse. The XM5 case to too large for any purse, I can see that it's flatness of the XM5 case may be convenient for a backpack. I expected there to be a GOOD REASON for their "new" shape, but I haven't found it. The stem (or whatever you call the part) that connects the headphone to the headband part seems less sturdy, than the flatter "stem" of the XM4's. **Photographed are my XM2's, but I used the 4's that were still under warantee thinking I was going to get a better product... I didn't get a better product, and with warrantee these set me back over $500. For that I need to be impressed and I'm not.

Hi KitchenAid, We are sorry to hear that the WH-1000XM5 headphones did not meet your expectations when it comes to the design change from the WH-1000XM4. These lightweight headphones are beautifully finished in newly developed soft fit leather. This material fits snugly around the head with less pressure on the ears while keeping out external sounds. Our noiseless design with stepless slider, seamless swivel and hanger, and silent joints, makes WH-1000XM5 a pleasure to wear. If you need assistance with your WH-1000M5 headphones, we are always here to help.

The headsets kept jumping into voice recognition. Anything that I was listening to with automatically stopped when a voice in the room was heard. Also, I don’t like that they don’t fold like the previous ones. I’m sitting as Best Buy as we speak replacing them because they broke in my hand as I was trying to put them onto my ears. Not worth the 400+ dollars I paid for it. Last model was so much better. And these when you turn them, mom won’t even tell you that they’re on like the last pair/model.

Let me start by saying that I really wanted to like these headphones. As someone who purchased the WH-1000XM2 headphones back in 2017, I was really looking forward to all the upgrades that the XM5 would provide. The upgrades were there, but so too were the problems as well. Let us begin. Pros: Excellent sound, fantastic noise canceling, very comfortable to wear, felt like a premium product to hold, lightweight, and I was a fan of the beige color. I would use these when traveling throughout NYC and commuting to work. The noise cancellation was so good that when standing on the subway platform and waiting for an oncoming train -- if I closed my eyes -- I could forget that I was on a busy platform while listening to my music. Cons: A few months after buying them, there came an issue where the sound would go out for 10-20 seconds at a time. It would happen randomly when walking, sitting, on a bus, or wherever. It didn't matter what type of audio I listened to, be it music or podcasts. It got to the point that I just stopped using the headphones altogether. I'm not sure if this issue is a cold-weather thing, as I began to notice beginning in October of last year when the temperature started to drop (interestingly, I purchased these headphones in December of '22, and there were no problems during that winter). Nevertheless, I went back to using the XM2s. Yes, I've gone back to using the same headphones that I thought would have been retired by now, but the XM5s were inconsistent with maintaining their audio. I'm so disappointed with these headphones and Sony. Perhaps I had a defective product, but for something that's nearly $400, constantly losing sound at any place at any time is incredibly frustrating. So, in the end, despite the excellent sound quality (when it would work) and noise cancellation, I can't in good conscience recommend anyone buy these headphones based on my experience with them. Again, I've had no problems with the XM2s, and they're almost 8 years old at this point. Sony, please get your act together because this was such a letdown.

Hi Oaktown,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern. While we're glad that you like most of the features, we are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your WH-1000XM5 disconnecting from your device randomly. We have taken note of your issues. We'd love to troubleshoot the issue and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, please make sure that the headphones has the latest software updates (via the Sony Sound Connect app) as this will help improve the overall performance of the WH-1000XM5.
In some cases, such as when you wear the headphones over a cap, a scarf, hair, etc., the sensors may not detect that you are wearing them and may turn them off. Be sure to set the earpads over the ears. Also, check the proximity sensor. If the proximity sensor part inside the left unit housing gets fogged up, or if there are water droplets on it due to condensation or humidity (from changing temperatures or sweat, for example), the Wearing Detection function may not work properly. If this happens, leave the proximity sensor part facing up until the moisture disappears. Please note that the WH-1000XM5 model is designed to function optimally between the temperatures of 0°C and 40°C (32 °F to 104 °F). Although it can and will function beyond this temperature range, performance may be impaired.
If the connection is unstable, such as when producing only intermittent sound, switch the sound quality mode to Prioritize Stable Connection. If the behavior continues, restore the unit to factory default. Doing so may resolve the issue. To reset the headphones, follow the steps from the link below.
https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm5/v1/en/contents/TP1000541012.html
If the issue persists, a separate article is available if there is no sound, or sound is only heard from one side of the headphones on this link here: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wh-1000xm5/articles/00204552

Great sound quality. Great battery life. Great active noise cancellation. Very comfortable. But all that is thwarted by the issue I and many other users have with the connectivity. It will often drop the connection to my phone, PC, Mac, tablet, or whatever other device I have it paired to. I’ve tried resetting it and unpairing it from every device I own so that the only device the headphones can pair to is the one I’m currently using. Still disconnects. Many great features but I can’t use any of them. I’m returning these.

They were awesome for 7months yep! You read that right. I’m a Developer in my mid 40’s with Autism so I wore them all the time. I was meticulous with how I cared for them as I do with all my things but especially my precious headphones. They broke at the joint where the cup meets the headband for no reason. By that I mean I wasn’t stretching them, laying in them, I didn’t drop them, smash them I just picked them up off the desk and the cup dangled. They still work. But here’s the best part. My “warranty” would be considered manufacturer because it’s been less than a year and Sony says they don’t cover “cosmetic defects as a result of normal wear” is that so!? So that’s normal?? Then they told me it’s because I did something which I did not. I have $20 Amazon headphones for 3-4 years give me a break. Then the Sony rep said “they are not designed to last very long we can give you a one time $50 discount on a new pair” What a joke!! You can buy them if you can afford what others have called poor craftsmanship because this plastic is cheap crap! And because of how Sony treated me I have wanted to let everyone everywhere know what you are getting into with this product and company. I was loyal for years now never again will they get a penny of my money. 7 months you guys! 7 months!! But that sound awesome for the time

I really want to like these headphones but there are some major issues that cannot be looked past. I primarily use these for work as I work alone around woodworking machinery all day. I previously had the Bose quitecomfort 35s for 6yrs and loved them but when they eventually wore out, research led me to try these out. Needless to say, due to the machinery the noise cancelling abilities were my primary concern The good: The sound quality is great, they are very comfortable for extended wear, the app is easy to use and control the headphones The irritating: The noise cancelling ability unfortunately did not meet that of the Bose quitecomfort 35s, don't get me wron it works pretty good, but just not as good which was disappointing. The "auto" features are an absolute annoyance and Inded up turning it off. It would detect I wasn't wearing the headphones even when I was. Constantly having to go back to my phone while I'm working to connect them again. The hand swipe features are cool but they are so sensitive that additionally while I worked it was constantly changing the volume or song when I never intended to. Like it reacts to ANYTHING touching them, not just your hands. The strech strap from my respirator would activate it. The BAD: Not sure if they purposley made the headphones not work right for samsung but, it a huge thing for me. I often work 12-15 hrs a day, take care of the kids and normally am not able to have any time to myself or watch a show until around 10 p.m. obviously, I use the headphones as to not wake anyone in the house up. Unfortunately, for whatever reason the headphones do not time up with the tv and play the sound in an insane reverb/crazy feedback. Its hard to explain but it sounds like its using the sound from the tv to communicate in morse code. I have up to date smart TV and have NEVER had an issue with ANY of my other bluetooth headphones on all of our TVs, and wouldn't you know it. The headphones do it on ALL 3 of our samsung TVs. So, to me to make a product that isnt compatible with the most popular brand of electronics is a HUGE foul. Overall, they sound great when they're working properly and the auto features arent doing whatever. To me they are VERY MEH. Ill have to just go back to the Bose 35s, theyre better than their newest models as well.

Make sure the noise canceling function is turned on.
Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions.
To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.

The overall sound quality and noise cancellation is pretty great and the battery . However, these are very poorly designed headphones for durability and have fairly frequent software related issues. I bought them in May 2022 and as of today they are no longer usable because of the very common hinge defect. - 3 months in the headphone band no longer kept its position, it would just slide around freely - 2 years in the hinge broke and is unable to be fixed so they are now completely unusable - Beside the two physical issues, I frequently encountered software issues ranging from random disconnections to being told I sound like a robot once a week while on calls. Note: I updated the software on the headphones frequently, so this was an ongoing thing. As a comparison, I _still_ have the XM3's and used them for 8+ hours a day for over 3 years before I "upgraded" to the XM5s. Those headphones are still going strong, my wife has been using them since I got the XM5s and there are no issues there at all. I strongly recommend looking somewhere else if you want to purchase a $450 (incl. tax) pair of headphones that will last a long time.

the fit is comfortable and battery life is acceptable, however the noise canceling feature isn't very good. I tend to use these in the office, and unfortunately unless I turn up the music, I can still hear people around me through the headphones. The audio quality is acceptable.

Hi Harliquin, while we're glad that you like the audio quality, comfort, and battery life, we regret to hear that the noise canceling function did not meet your expectations. We'd love to help you troubleshoot your problem and turn this into a better experience.
We have recommended steps to help fix the problem such as the following:
With the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode.
Check with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app whether the function of the NC/AMB button is set to [Ambient Sound Control].
Because the noise canceling performance is automatically optimized by the Auto NC Optimizer function according to changes in the wearing condition and usage environment, you may notice fluctuations in the noise canceling effect
