I wanted to like this speaker, but the sound quality is just lousy. Size is well enough. Looks slightly more stylish than the competition. But man, that's where yhe compliments end. Downloaded the Sony Music app, updated the software. Only has a 3-slider EQ. Can move bass up, but then everything else gets washed out. Theres no balance. When you lower mids the music sounds underwater. When highs are bumped up, it makes everything sound shrill. This speaker manages to mangle music into noise. It might work for others, but it just sounds hollow. Mediocre effort.

Hi Future99,
We are sorry to hear that you are having a sound quality issue with your Sony portable Bluetooth speaker. This is definitely not the customer experience we want you to have. Please make sure to turn up the volume of the speaker and the connected device. When listening, please move the speaker away from a device such as a microwave oven, a wireless LAN access point, TV, radio or tuner, etc. since noise may occur in broadcasts that can affect the overall sound quality of your speaker. You can also switch the Bluetooth connection quality between “Priority on Sound Quality” for a better quality.

This SRS-XE300 from Sony is a shockingly subpar offering at an eye-popping price point. It does do some things well and has some great app integration and features and a tight user experience you’d expect from a premier brand. However, at the end of the day, a speaker has to do one thing well and that’s where it falls very short. I feel it best to just go ahead and come straight out with it; this speaker has very disappointing sound for the price. At this price point, you simply cannot have any shortcomings and this speaker has several. Out of the box, the sound profile is extremely flat and disappointing. Thankfully, you can make adjustments with Sony’s Music Center app giving you basic control over bass, mid, and treble or you can let Sony determine the optimal settings with their “ClearAudio+” setting. However, even after spending probably close to 1/2 hour playing different music genres and playing with different adjustments, including using ClearAudio+, performance just doesn’t improve much at all. It still doesn’t sound lively or punchy, bass is particularly disappointing as it just does not ever sound deep or thump. The speaker doesn’t get very loud at all, and no matter what settings or adjustments I’ve used, I’ve found it impossible to not have music sound hollow and lifeless - almost like music is trapped inside and somehow has managed to escape. Frankly, it just does not sound good. To be sure I wasn’t crazy, we took three speakers to a friends house for a pool party. One was a smaller (but similar) size but costs under a 1/3rd of the price, one was a similar price but roughly twice the size. I asked 5 other adults to all do a blind ranking of their performance and every single one of them placed the Sony speaker last. I have several portable Bluetooth speakers from several different price points and this one is the worst value no questions asked. Competing brands offer much better sound from a smaller package that has nearly all of the same features this speaker has. Where’s the value? And more importantly, where is the sound?! It’s not all bad: Sony offers everything you’d expect in a speaker like this; water and dust resistant, great battery life, app integration (that’s actually very good), and the ability to share your speaker with others or tether additional speakers together. It is extremely handsome and feels very well made. It definitely looks the part of a speaker at this price. Even though it’s on the larger end of portable speaker size, it’s still very easy to carry and throw in a bag or backpack for a party or the pool. But at the end of the day, none of that really matters because the sound is so disappointing.

I really wanted to be able to give this speaker a 5 star rating. Pros: It sounds really good, it looks really good. I haven't had a chance to throw it into water yet so I can't speak to the IP67 rating. CONS: The Bluetooth pairing is very unstable, it constantly drops. The other day after it dropped I was able to re-connect it but no matter what I did I couldn't get sound to play through the speaker. I bought 2 of them to create a stereo pair, which sounds great and offers better sound coverage pointing in different directions since they aren't super loud. The problem is it's constantly dropping the 2nd speaker from the pair. They can't handle any heat, if you are using them outside make sure they are in the shade, if they get warm at all they will just shut down. While it does sound really good like any Sony should, it doesn't get very loud. Lastly, the stated battery life is a joke. At 3/4 volume the battery will last about 8 hours which is decent but no where near the 24 hours they advertise. I can't recommend a better option but I can say it's worth looking into other options and finding something else.

Hi Jrfromffx, Thank you for sharing your time with the Sony XE300 portable speaker. While we are happy that you are impressed with the sound quality, we're sad to hear that you are having connectivity and battery issues. This is definitely not what we wanted you to experience. Please make sure that your device has the latest firmware update. The firmware release can help improve connectivity and retention of the Sound settings.
The optimal operating temperature of the device is 5 °C – 35 °C.
We recommend not to use or leave the unit in an extremely cold or hot environment (temperature outside the range of 5 °C – 35 °C). If the unit is used or left in outside the above range, the unit may automatically stop to protect internal circuitry.
As for the battery, please make sure to fully charge it every time it's depleted. It may take approximately 5 hours for the empty battery to be fully charged (100%) while the unit is powered off.
I hope this helps but if you still need assistance, do not hesitate to drop us an email at socialsupport@am.sony.com with the following details:

The sound is pretty clear and the ability to connect to other sony speakers is great. However, the app to adjust the sound was lacking and the bass was not deep at all. If you're looking for a deep, punchy bass this will not fill that need. If all you care about is a clean sound over-all this will work for that.

Hi Dell,
Thank you for taking the time to review your SRS-XE300 speaker. We're sorry to hear it hasn't performed to your standards when it comes to the bass sound. We want to make sure you are getting the most out of your speaker.
When you download the Sony Music Center App, there is a built-in EQ that has 20 points of control for Bass, Midrange, and Treble to tailor-fit the sound quality to your needs and ensure optimal performance with the speaker. You may also find different devices will perform better than others, as will different apps due to different types of audio compression and transmission.
If the sound is too low or the bass sound can't be heard, check if the Ambient Noise Sensing function is activated. Please note that when the Ambient Noise Sensing function is activated, the speaker detects environmental noises during the music playback. This function will help reduce power consumption and preserve the battery by cutting out bass sounds that will become hard to hear because of the ambient noise.

I've had JBL speakers all my life, specifically the charge series and it's about the same size as the speaker so I decided to buy this for my girlfriend since her speaker wasn't working. When we tested it out I noticed that although my speaker has been probably 4 years old(Charge 4) now and it still had more fullness in bass and sound clarity than the Sony speaker although they were in the same price range.

For the price, I was hoping it would be able to get a lot louder. It definitely beats my old speaker, but that’s not saying much cuz my old one was like $10 and 1/5 the size. Also, the 16hr battery life is a complete lie. I get 3 hours before the low battery warning alert and can maybe get 4 hours out of a full charge. That’s really disappointing. Like why lie? Just say 4 hours max, that’s still a good battery.

Hi Mikey615,
Thank you for taking the time to review your SRS-XE200 speaker. We're so sorry if you find the speaker doesn't get very loud and it hasn't performed to your standards when it comes to battery life. We want to make sure you are getting the most out of your speaker. Depending on the connected BLUETOOTH device, volume adjustment on the BLUETOOTH device may not change the volume level of the speaker (i.e. the(power) indicator does not flash). When the volume of the speaker sounds low, adjust the volume level of the BLUETOOTH device to an appropriate one, and then adjust the volume level of the speaker with the +/- (volume) buttons on the speaker.
If the Sound becomes low while in use, refer to these helpful links:
https://helpguide.sony.net/speaker/srs-xe200/v1/en/contents/TP1000611675.html
https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/speakers-wireless-speakers/srs-xe300/articles/00278737
The XE200 will give you 16 hours of play when the battery is fully charged, meaning a single charge should be long enough to power through any party. And Sony's unique mic sensing technology, Ambient Noise Sensing, helps save battery when used outside.
Built-in battery life (while the speaker is not in Battery Care mode and a BLUETOOTH connection is established)
Approx. 16 hours: Volume level: 31, STAMINA: on
Approx. 10 hours (default): Volume level: 30, STAMINA: off
Approx. 3 hours: Volume level: 50 (MAX.), STAMINA: off
The built-in battery life above is measured using our specified music source. Actual performance time may vary from the listed time due to the volume, songs played, surrounding temperature, and usage conditions.
