The volume limitation is pretty infuriating for such an otherwise great device. Not that i like very loud music-i do not. But in some cases i do want just a bit more volume than i can get here so i think the limit is set too low. I would recommend getting a different version instead of this one, or a completely different device instead. However, after listening for a week or so, i find i really do like the sound, smooth user experience, and options that come in the music player app, and i have decided to keep it even though its completely unusable with some of my headphones-especially my open back hd560s's. i would say its probably made only for use with in-ear monitors (it really does sound great with my Shure SE535's) and only if you use in reasonably quiet environments. Stupid limitations from Sony for such an expensive device, especially when other players don't have these limitations, but hopefully they will send out a software update sometime to address it. side note, read the manual as sony didnt help when i contacted them to ask if there were any settings that could help increase volume. i found 2 that did help a little. 1 setting in the menu lets you change the db level from -3 to 0, and another allows you to adjust the device so that music played through sources other than the sony music player will not be lowered-that will at elast bring your tidal or apple music up to the same level. i can't imagine why anyone would ever use that setting on this player with the volume issues, but its set lower from factory and needs to be adjusted.

Hi Josh, thanks for choosing and purchasing our product. We're glad you are enjoying the sound quality of our product. We're sorry to hear that you have an issue with the volume of your SONY unit. The volume may be low when you use certain headphones. In this case, switch the output setting to High Gain. Also, the AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function reduces the risk of damage to ears from loud volumes. Using AVLS limits the maximum volume. Please check this link for more details:

I was pleasantly surprised just how good this HiRes portable digital player is. The quality build is outstanding. The ability to deliver HiRes audio through both a balanced and 3.5 mm wired connection is exceptional. Yes, the US version has volume limiter and struggles to power large headphone sets. That doesn’t bother me because I use the Bluetooth function to transmit my music to a high end BT speaker and Apple AirPro headphones. That way I circumvent the volume limiter. I purchased a 512GB micro sd card and loaded my library of 6000 FLAC music files onto it. The onboard Sony Walkman music management app is a bit wonky. I downloaded from the google play store musicolet which is afar better way to manage your music on the Walkman. I use both Mac and PC to manage my music files. The PC has a bit of a smoother way to transfer music using the Sony app. I did find a few decent Android transfer apps for Macs that work reasonably well minus the fancy UI. Battery life is actually better than I expected. I received 19 hours of continuous music delivery via Bluetooth. Overall I really like this player. The Sony quality build is amazing. Very durable. Definitely buy a protective case to protect you investment. If you are lucky to find one in stock at Best Buy, pick it up. These are going to be harder to find in the coming months.

I sound quality was good but the device had to be close to volume 100 to power my IEM headphones. It left me no room for upgrading my headphones in the future. Simply put Sony hamstrung the device by limiting the volume output so much. I ended up purchasing the older Sony NW-ZX507 which predated the volume limit and is a great device!

Very happy with this purchase. The hardware quality is excellent. The sound quality, battery life and screen are all very good. The Android OS could use some improvements as it isn’t quite as responsive as on my phone. I have used it so far with 4 different headphones all with great results. Added a 512GB microSD card for extra storage.

So far it’s average. I really enjoy the DAP. The sound profile is wide, clear, and bass accurate. This would be perfect if I were to just be able to adjust the volume just a bit higher. I have disabled avls, but still would benefit from extra juice. Maybe I’ll have to move towards the nw1am2. Sony please just give this some juice on an update. I’m sure it will sell like hotcakes.

I like this device. I got it to support using a dumbphone, good for Spotify, most apps, etc. Isn't as fast as a modern android phone, but coming from the Boox Palma2, night and day difference. Feels durable, definately has some heft. I recommend it!

It seems cell phones sound better with JBL ear buds as the walkman does not support jbl's app.. i am disapointed with this $600 dollar purchase and expected more out of it

The volume output is way too low to enjoy music. I tried rolling IEMs, I used balanced headphones and regular ones, and I even tried the USB out with a dongle. The results were the same. Apparently certain regions get the hardware for more power but not here in the US, and that really sucks because I like the device but I will be returning this and I’ll look for another player to suit my needs.

The North America version has high gain and a lower power output due to regulations. Hard to drive 60Ohm headphones. Need to max out at 120. Returning.

Hi LetsShop, we're sorry to hear that you had returned your SONY unit. Unfortunately, the NWZX707 does not have a high gain mode. Maximum power output of NWZX707 is 0.4-1.1mW (32Ω).

Nice looking DAC but SONY needs to listen to all the poor reviews and fix it for the next series. The volume limiter is a critical flaw in the US version which degraded an otherwise fine product. Had to return and buy another brand even though I wanted to keep this.

I owned the ZX-507 previously & this is a big improvement. It has a new solid heavy feel & a larger screen. Not light or for the gym - that would be the A306. For playing music, Sony players are the best, far better than compared to the Astell & Kern I had previously. Even streaming music sounds better with the upscaling & interface is faster. Volume A few comments were posted about the volume, but I haven't experienced any issues. I know that the AVLS volume limiter is a checkbox in the settings, but I turned that off. I powered the MDR-Z7M2 70MM headphones but I had to turn volume to 90%, so it works better with the 40mm (or bluetooth headphone) Battery I ate through the battery & saw that it was that I had Youtube Music & the screen on. Bluetooth only consumed 1% so that was efficient. You won't get 20 hours unless wifi & screen are off.

I spent the extra money to by a Sony device because it had a newer version of android than competing devices. I also didn't want to buy a device from an "alphabet soup" brand. It worked fine at first, although occasionally sluggish. Around 19 - 20 days of ownership, the walkman would reboot itself when I removed the charging cable and again when I removed the microSD card. Now the walkman is completely unusable. Shortly after I log into the device, it locks up and reboots. There's no tiny hardware reset button (seriously Sony?) and a soft reset doesn't work. Extremely disappointed Sony support offered to replace, but one week later, I still haven't received the necessary RMA even though there is a deadline for Sony to receive the defective device

I purchased this because of the great experience I had with the sony NWA 45 player. The ZX707 is not what I expected. The android operating system is not geared towards high quality music, but instead wants to give you your Email, messages, connections to your phone, news, ect. The interface with the XD card is cumbersome at best. Compatibility is an issue with my vehicle which is only 4 years old you can not plug the usb into the Silverado my link system it will not communicate. At this price point I expected better.

This "updated" model does not even drive the same headphones I used for my old NW-A105: ATH-AP2000Ti, which has only 44 ohms impedance! The only reason for upgrading was to be able to use balanced cable and better headphones, like Sennheiser HD 650 (300 ohms). Why would somebody pay more to buy a bigger device, that does less?? Sony, can you please recall this or upgrade software? I heard that there are some variants that allow for high gain but mine does not have that...
