StarTech.com - DisplayPort to VGA Video Converter - Black

I need to set up dual screens. Right now I have a VGA split cable but all it does is duplicate the original screen. Would the Display port to vga video converter be what I needed in order to achieve the extended screen with a second monitor???

Do you have to install custom drivers or can you just plug and play?

I have an older HP tower with VGA ports that i want to connect to a new LG monitor with a display port,will this allow me to do that?

I keep seeing differences in these converters (i.e. VGA to HTMI or HTMI to VGA). My intention is to use a HTMI TV to display my computer's VGA image. Many are presenting these converters as being mutually natural in signal distribution. Are they?
