Unless you're a baseball fan, you won't know what you're actually about to experience if you haven't already played previous Super Mega Baseball installments in this beloved franchise. It's more important to know what this series is about before giving it a try because it's not a traditional MLB experience that merely focuses on total realism. It's still cartoony with arcade-style elements and truly meant for a specific demographic. Aside that, the fourth entry in this series continues the tradition of baseball simulation but with twists to make it more accessible for curious outsiders and hardcore audiences. It features customizable options, modes for playstyles, a massive roster featuring retired MLB legends that could even be drafted to fictionalized teams and more. It's the proper blend of nostalgia, creative freedom and entertainment value to whoever anticipated this sequel's innovation. But innovation is always key and unfortunately this sequel has some setbacks compared to its previous entries. Notably compared to the third entry, it has some missing and underutilized features that passionate fans have requested such as expanding the franchise and extra simulation options. Newcomers either won't notice or care enough about these things unless they've already played enough baseball games. It's also, at times, clunky to play which could be overlooked since it's already visually eccentric. It's almost a home run but you won't feel as surprised, unless you've already played previous entries, and newcomers may find more enjoyment if they're interested to join the club. However, the unfortunate downgrades and missing features prevents this sequel from achieving its fullest potential even with a full roster of nostalgia and questionable additions. Hardcore MLB fans may have to wait longer for a truer fulfilling sequel, or reboot, but could still find some enjoyment with this in the meantime.

I’ve enjoyed my time playing Super Mega Baseball 4 on PlayStation 4, especially because it strikes a great balance between arcade-style fun and realistic baseball mechanics. The controls are intuitive, making it easy to pick up and play, but there’s enough depth in pitching, batting, and fielding to keep games competitive and engaging over time.
