This is one of my favorite movies and it was also one of the first I purchased when I got a Blu-ray player. I have enjoyed watching this film with my family several times and it is just a great movie overall. I would highly recommend seeing this picture to anyone.

In this 3 disc release of “The Longest Day,” you get the movie on a Blu-ray disc and a DVD, and another DVD with special features. There is no digital copy. The BD of this movie about the D -Day invasion of Normandy, looks great. The DVD when played on a BD player looks good, but it looks terrible when played on a DVD player. It’s has too much contrast and lacks shadow detail which makes it hard to see the night scenes, which are an important part of the story. The special features disc has 7 items. On the featurettes, they sometimes use the same clips, but this is probably because they were made at different times, for different purposes. Also included are five 4.5 x 5.5 inch art cards with facts about some of the main characters. The plastic disc case comes in a slip case. This is a great deal for WWII buffs and it was on sale for 7.99!

I really enjoyed watching this movie. It is a pretty good historical reference point if you don’t know much about the day. I would encourage you to watch this for context if you wanna know what happened

The Longest Day is one of my top three war movies. The planning, delays and diversions ratchet up the tension, which then is released in epic fashion by the Omaha landing and other battles. However, even in the thick of the fight, you can't help but wonder if the poor paratrooper who landed on the church steeple would make it to the end. If this doesn't persuade you that they don't make them like that anymore, try spotting the many stars who made cameos throughout the movie. The picture quality is amazing sharp, with satisfying black levels. The occasional vertical streaks and soft images only serve to remind us of the wonderful restoration of the rest of the film. The justly famous tracking shot of commandos charging through the streets is even more spellbinding in 1080p. Coming in a close second is the 5.1 audio remix, which does a credible job, given the limitations of the old stereo source. The handsome Best Buy SteelBook houses the Blu-ray and a separate DVD stuffed with special features. The included documentary, The Longest Day: A Salute to Courage, weaves the history of the book and the movie into the real history of D-Day. It is a must-see, even in 480p. With improved video and audio, and plenty of insightful supplements, The Longest Day has never looked so good.

We all have seen the more recent picture "Saving Private Ryan" and other films depicting the War at Normandy. However, this film is a classic because of all the great actors who appeared in this film and put their hearts and souls into the different roles, Army Privates right up to the Generals. This film, in glorious black and white, is a great Classic which is worth viewing every once in a while. I remember seeing this film years ago and I think about all those men and women who gave their lives for this country in order to destroy the evils of Adolph Hitler and his wicked country who allowed this man to have such power and control. "Saving Private Ryan" was a great film and broke out hearts but this film is truly a great film classic.

The Longest Day is a long movie that is a must see if you love movie stars from the 50's jam packed into one film. P.S. it goes by fast even though it's long.

At first look at the packaging I was worried -- it appears from the cover the film has been colorized. Thankfully the hi-def Blue Ray is in the original black and white and the quality is great. The soundtrack has been enhanced for today's stereo and surround audio systems and this is great, too (yes, purist on the visual but all-in on the upgraded audio). This is not a documentary, and not all the scenes are historic/authentic. But the movie tells the story close enough to the book and reality to give viewers a grand overview of one of the important battles of WWII. Clearly a product of the early sixties but entertaining and a film that belongs in the collection lovers of war movies.
