Various Artists - Music Ashanti of Ghana / Various - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Before the Ashanti region was annexed by the British in 1901, into what is now Ghana, it was one of the most powerful kingdoms of pre-colonial Africa, and music played a vital role in Ashanti society. The tracks on this 1979 Folkways range from genres found at the court of chiefs to highlife. Multi-level drum music predominates, but there are also other instruments and vocal numbers, especially by women.
