Smokey Rarely sounds like Smokey

I didn't have to think twice about buying a Christmas CD by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. But when I played it, it did not have the iconic SRATM sound. I listened again ...then again. Still not hearing or feeling it. Apart from the trademark sound being absent, the songs are merely okay at best.
