    Synopsis

    976-Evil
This underrated teen-revenge horror film starring Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night) was the directorial debut of Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. Geoffreys plays Hoax, a picked-on nerd who lives with his religious-nut mother Lucy (the marvelous Sandy Dennis). One day Hoax calls a 976-line for a "Horrorscope," and the demonic voice at the other end starts giving him wicked advice. Before long, he has killed his brother's girlfriend with tarantulas, slashed the face of a teen tough with his newly-sprouted talons, and gutted several of his tormentors. Only a well-meaning journalist and a sexy schoolmarm can stop the now-demonic Hoax before he sends the whole neighborhood straight to Hell. Granted, the screenplay is rather confused and slow-moving, but Geoffreys and Dennis are great, the effects work by Kevin Yagher is skillful, and this is one of the few teen-horror films with characters that are actually interesting. Look for Robert Picardo (The Howling) in a fun cameo as the diabolical Mark Darke. After a brief stint as a teen star, Geoffreys went on to appear in gay porn films as "Sam Ritter." ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Stephen Geoffreys stars in this late 80's supernatural tale. Basically a high school tough guy lives with his nerdy cousin and religious aunt. His cousin calls a horrorscope hot line and meets a hellish guy named Mark Dark. He is given powers to destroy his tormentors. So this is similar to Marc Price in Trick Or Treat from 1986. The ending is a steal from Poltergeist. With great effects and makeup by Kevin Yagher. Sandy Dennis, Maria Rubell, and Jim Metzler also star. Best Buy sold this for $12.99 on Blu-Ray with two different versions available. The theatrical and alternate home video version.

Who would have thought we would finally get 976-EVIL on Blu-Ray! The transfer is very well done and is a significant upgrade over the DVD. There are just two extras, an alternate cut that is presented in standard def but enjoyable as it's a reminder of watching the movie on VHS originally. The second extra is a commentary with Robert Englund. My copy did not come with a slipcover but that's ok as the movie is well worth the purchase price.

I’ve never seen this movie till I purchased it and to be honest, I think it was pretty good all an all. It to me, wasn’t scary but it did have that old 80’s horror feel to it. Which I enjoyed and the storyline wasn’t bad at all! It had some pretty decent special effects going on throughout the movie. I would definitely say that if you like 80’s horror movies that you should give this one a try on for size! You just might enjoy it!

I have always liked this movie, as I am a Robert England fan, and he definitely carries over the nightmare vibe of his Freddy films over to this movie. This movie is a bit cheesy if one were to scrutinize it, but hey, what can I say, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine to watch. If your an 80’s horror movie fan, then I would recommend this to you.

The film is not very good at all. Very boring first half leads to a decent last half. The blu-ray does look and sound great. There is an alternate version of the film as a special feature and a commentary that bored me to tears.

This movie is not great by any means but it's the 80's horror that I just love and directed by Robert England also has Evil Ed from the original Fright Night. Plus it's on Blu-Ray so it has a nice clear picture compared to the old VHS quality we had when this movie first came out.

It's nice to see Sony release some of their more obscure library titles - they usually license these out to Mill Creek. Sony put some love into this release - the packaging has been designed to replicate the look of a tattered VHS tape box. Great video and audio.
